Ah! The Tangalooma Wrecks. Way back in the 80's, we took the kids to Tangalooma Resort. We went on the best sand boarding ever (just like you), went on the 4WD bus to the lighthouse to watch the dolphins surfing. And, of course, watched the dolphin being fed - and WE fed them one night. It certainly is a kid's paradise. One trick I learnt there looked really dangerous, but was really, really safe. Having a kid stand on my shoulders without him holding on while I walked around in the pool. I recommend it... Standing chest deep in the water, you get him to sit up on your shoulders. He puts both hands on your head (be ready to take his weight there). Leaning on your head if he wants to, he moves one foot onto your shoulder under his bum ('butt' in American?), then the other. Now for the brave bit. Putting most of his weight on your head, he stands up, slowly. As he starts, you place your hands just below his knees, supporting him as he rises. When his legs are straight (and his hands still on your head), let him notice the steadiness caused by your grip. Now ask him to straighten up, slowly. He will be amazed how steady and secure he is. He will be able to stretch his arms out like Jesus on the cross, he can clap his hands above his head, lean back as much as he wants (he must warn you first), lean forward too (with warning). He can stand on one leg while you let go of the other. But the best is still to come: the dive off your shoulders - well, more like a bomb. Once achieved, you can walk him around as he shows off. It is so safe and secure but looks really dangerous. We even did it on dry land. You are a good free diver, so you could submerge yourself and make it look like he's walking on water! The secret is your secure grip. BTW, that's how stilts work: they're strapped just below the knee. One additional trick: the launch off your shoulders. He puts his hands back on your head, you remove your grip, he bends his legs (the crow-hop posn?), you then burrow your hands under each of his feet. He is then ready for take-off! The Wrecks were great for that because it got so deep so quickly, he could dive in headlong while I still had my nose above water. Thanks for bringing back the memories! An idea: how about 2 kids on your shoulders, one each side???

LOL! 😆. Seth you could not get over that MULLET could you? Not long ago the Wall Street Journal had an interesting article about mullets..."The Mullet Makes a Comeback and Divides Australia". Being from Calif too, I instantly don't like them but I think anyone who is brave enough to wear them has to be pretty cool. 😁

Scorpion move … that feeling of hearing “crack” in the neck, while heels are flying over head, back bent into a C … with a “nice” bottom scrapping with the face… glad you’re OK, knowing how easily shallow water fun can turn into a wheelchair situation.

@@TheSailingFamily It sure does. My first was just after I started surfing, taking off on a longboard - straight and late. Full on pearling, heels over head (and board). So I was buying boards with super front rocker for years… but the second time was similar to yours - shallow water playing, relaxed not paying attention… sand is concrete (dove head first into it from a small wave). Epitel peeling and crkacking - freaked out. A friend of mine broke his spine by playing in shallow water, jumping etc. so now - I don’t dwell in water less than shoulder deep 😬

Hi just wondering if you are aloud to let your boom out to fill your sail up more just because I have never seen you release further then close reach.
@TheSailingFamily3 жыл бұрын
Yes, when on a reach or a run, we let out the mainsail until the top battens are just about to touch the shrouds. I don't like to see the mainsail touching as it's not good for the sail fabric, and it puts additional load on the rigging. But most importantly, we don't see a performance improvement if we let it out more while cruising (if we want more sail area up we hoist the Reacher or Symmetrical Spinnaker depending on the wind). When racing, we go for it. Hope that helps! ~Seth

Do you or other boats have cameras up on the mast? As you were navigating those shallow waters, it appears you were only using line of sight and visually seeing the color changes in the water. Wouldn't cameras up high give a macro view to help with obstacles? Are cameras like this even a thing?

What is a dagger board?
@TheSailingFamily3 жыл бұрын
It is a vertical board, much like a surfboard fin, that we can raise and lower on our boat. It's main purpose is to prevent sideways drift when we are sailing up wind or side to the wind. And when going downwind, we can raise them completely to limit drag. In this instance, we lowered them to protect the saildrives/propellers. Does that help? ~Seth
