Here in South Africa too it's standard practise by farmers to prevent wildfires, we say they're "burning firebreaks". Surprised some people don't know about this, thought it was common knowledge.

Loggers in Northern California have been saying this forever. The gov used to do it when I was a kid. (The forestry service and Cal fire) this isn't at all new. However they lessened this practice about 20+- years ago cause "environmental concerns" and budget cuts.

Note: I'm not a Trump supporter. But last year in 2020, when California was burning down _(and the air in our cities were worse than places like Delhi at its worst)_ we all laughed at him when he suggested trimming the underbrush. Which is exactly what's being done right now.
@CIARUNSITE3 жыл бұрын
It would have been incredibly helpful if he'd stated his desire for CalFire to invest more money in prescribed burns to clear out sources of fuel. Instead he suggested we rake the forest. He identified a real problem and followed it up with a worthless suggestion.

I live in Florida and we control burn all the time here. Even though we have water in our state, that doesn’t mean we don’t have hot summers that get up to 104 degrees. It’s also very dry between December and may. It’s very very important to control burn and I’m surprised that California the most liberal state is having a problem with fires because they aren’t control burning

Plenty of safe places to live in CA. But the government will never tell rich people they shouldn't live in ridiculously dangerous areas and the rich people can hire private firefighters.
