Meet the 'rare' twin foals

A pair of rare foal twins, born on a farm in Suffolk, have become an internet hit with more than five million people having watched their story.
Welsh cobs Tilly and Lilly defied the odds, believed to be "one-in-10,000", and were born to six-year-old mum Rose in a Wingfield stable.
Foal twins are very rare as it can be dangerous for the mare to carry them to full term, but on this occasion experts agreed it was best to let nature take its course.

I saw a show one time where a veterinarian had to go and rescue one of the foals. It turned out that the mother rejected one and wanted to keep the other. And this case the mother accepts them both so that works out great.

Sometimes yeah. A mare having twins isn’t like when a human has twins, it is much more risky for mares because they could potentially die, or, one or both of the foals die during delivery or one foal could die due to the mare’s body not providing enough nutrients for one foal. This was an EXTREMELY lucky case where both foals made it to term with no apparent disabilities, neither was rejected by the mare, and it didn’t end with one or both dying shortly after birth.

Alright folks; put away your cute comments and happy icons long enough for a reality check: All twin foal births have one thing in common: THEY SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO HAPPEN. Twin foal/mare survival rates are extremely low. This is because there is not enough room in a mare's uterus for twins. The vast majority of these events end up with dead foals (usually stillborn) and a dead mare (by exanguination). These irresponsible owners should have had an early sonogram done. If the vet detects two embryos, she will pinch one off, thus giving the remaining embryo and mare a fair chance at life. By posting a warm, fuzzy video and allowing viewers to propagate their naive, cutsy comments, this clueless owner is doing a disservice to the entire equine species. PLEASE, if you ever plan to breed an equine, do a little basic research first and speak with your vet.

Agreed! There is a less than 1% chance of survival rate in twin foals! There is a high chance that the mare would have aborted both foals spontaneously!
