I don't know if Netflix show is accurate on this, but if it is, it all starts with the grandmother being very kind to the man who killed her own daughter, even saying she loved and forgave him on court, because "she knew he loved her daughter so much". So this denial of the evil was passed on. The result was a gullible daughter that could not recognize a dangerous man.

The Netflix show is actually very close to what actually happened. There are a few things that are different, but they did a pretty good job sticking to the facts. & you’re right about the grandmother’s Christian forgiveness causing a lot of this. Religion kills more people than anything else ever has. I believe in forgiving people, but there were just too many red flags & bullshit in his stories, so it was like blind forgiveness that he didn’t deserve.

I hope all the people in the comments who are showing little to no empathy for Debra and her story never have to deal with an abuser like John. Once again NOT saying she’s innocent but acting like she’s not a victim is ridiculous
@Hurleyj09
@Hurleyj09 3 жыл бұрын
She is a victim, but just because she is, it doesn’t absolve her of all wrongdoing. Obviously in the end, all of the blame goes towards the abuser. But at the same time, what kind of mother chooses a man she just met over her own daughters? Especially when all of these warning signs kept coming? Who the fuck wears their medical gear to a party? She had many chances to break it off with this guy, but she kept buying his bs and forgiving him through all of his MAJOR lies and questionable actions. To me she is clearly an insecure woman and those insecurities were preyed upon. That’s all very unfortunate. Thankfully me nor any of my loved ones have been in an abusive relationship, so I admittedly can’t fully understand how she was feeling or thinking. But she had so many chances to use better judgement.

Well, your not exactly wrong... That said, Terra has worked very hard through the recovery process of surviving such a horrifying incident. Understandably she has been through more than most could even imagine, physically, spiritually, and emotionally. She is an exceptionally sweet and sensitive soul, and she has to work very hard to remain as positive as possible. The interviews that you have seen - are a way for her to channel the progression of positive healing and security within herself, so while she might come off as gleeful in them - trust me when I tell you that she relives that gruesomely terrifying experience the most when she's alone with her thoughts, and has to battle them on her own. I do understand what you mean though - as I have wondered the same thing myself. (By the way, I am married to Terra's cousin.)

@Robert N have you ever been in that position where you’ve had to fight for your life? Believe it or not, the psychological response when talking about something like this is to laugh, it’s a coping mechanism. You realise that John had dug a grave for Terra, he wasn’t approaching her to have coffee, he was going to kill her. If you were her, and just because you’re male it doesn’t mean that this couldn’t happen to you , do you think that you wouldn’t have the typical emotional response like Terra, you would. It’s completely absurd to wrap your head around - having to kill someone because you know that if they get the advantage, they will kill you.

Terra did a great job defending her life from this psycho. Who gives a **** about nervous laughter on a TV talk show. She’s been in therapy since the event. Her first words to her Mom on the phone immediately after were saying that she thought she had killed her Mom’s husband. She didn’t say “I was attacked” which many - probably most - of us would have said, focusing on ourselves. She didn’t trivialize her actions, even though they were ENTIRELY justified. She realized she may have killed a man, which was obviously traumatizing and disturbing.

This lets you find out who he really is, and don't allow him to waste your time! There are a lot of con artists out there who want to take you for everything you got. Be careful!!! Make sure you watch "Dirty John" part 1 and 2 on Netflix.

Never heard this story before, but in UK she would have been arrested and possibly imprisoned for killing the guy with the knife. There are cases of people here who have killed burglars in defence of family and property who have gone to far (in the law's opinion) and not used reasonably force. I give 100 per cent credit to this girl.

I’ve heard of certain stories in the US, I don’t remember which states it had happened in; but people have gone to jail for the same thing. A burglary happens and in self defense the owner had gone to jail for manslaughter. There is also stories of a burglar suing the owners of the house they were trying to steal from. They got attacked by the owner’s dogs. Then another the burglar got cut on the glass that THEY shattered while braking in!! They sued and won! I have no idea how this outcome could even happen, they don’t deserve shit except jail time. Google the stories and you’ll get more details. I researched them after hearing about it them on the news. But these took place years ago though. Not recently.

I watched the series and Debra, her mother and Terra do not come out looking too bright. Debra, after finding all the evidence on John, still continues to remain in denial, her mother has her head so buried in the Bible that she chooses to explain away everything as just "mistakes" rather than criminal behaviour, and Terra is definitely a product of her upbringing. It's the sister Veronica's diligence that is the catalyst behind zeroing in on the problem. This is such a weird interview. Terra is recounting the day she stabbed someone 13 times like she's sharing a funny thing that happened on the way to a concert. Odd, odd, odd.

Ok so where do women find the great guys who happen not to be married? I have heard men say the same, so maybe I'm looking from really skewed glasses, but it just seems so hard to find a good one.
@KelleyBroussardMackaig
@KelleyBroussardMackaig 3 жыл бұрын
You're not looking through skewed glasses, Jennifer - Debrah was the one who was looking through skewed glasses. The reason why it's hard to find a good man these days is because they are sadly rare and far few in between. BUT - with that being said, there still ARE good men out there. Sadly, Debrah willingly ignored all the blatant warning signs about John, she also had been married and divorced four times before she met him online, then after only TWO MONTHS of dating him - she brilliantly married him. Sadly, it was Debrah's denial and desperation that caused her to not be able to recognize this dangerous man for who he was. Keep your standards, morals and requirements high - don't settle out of loneliness. And finally - If your gut is telling you that something is off, listen to it because it probably is. Love and light to you, dear.

yea if you notice the giggle is like the exact same every single time and that's usually a sign that it's a nervous tic. I also giggle at the wrong times as a way to get through stories without having panic attacks. I had to tell the story of someone breaking into our home and us having to pull guns several times and every time I would have a panic attack, but when I let myself giggle, I can get past them. It's weird, but it works for me. I see a lot my reaction in her. It doesn't look "normal", but it's more common than you'd think.

Whilst there is no defence for this John character a little introspection might do this woman some good. With 5 failed marriages you have the worst taste in men lacking the common sense to make decisions about relationships or be an absolutely terrible wife, or indeed both. As for the daughter, stabbing someone 13 times goes a little bit past self defense.

No. She had to make sure that this man - who was much bigger than her and was trying to kill her - was no longer a threat. And the DA disagrees with you... as she was not charged. And like Square Peg says, she was underneath him. Who knows what would have happened if not for that last stab to the eye? If she had quit just prior to that, could he have had enough adrenaline to get the knife back and kill her? The other wounds I believe were all to his shoulder and back area. None to the chest. It is really quite miraculous how this turned out.
