That would have been just as dangerous as what he did, but much less effective. The ambulance was rear wheel drive, so the thief could have easily turned it into a tug-o-war with the front wheels hooked. Flattening a tire and puncturing the radiator was definitely a better way to reduce the speed and range of the ambulance.

No reason to make the ambulance go faster and potentially cause a really bad crash. if someone wants to run away at 15 mph, they will chase at 15mph. What he did was both good and dumb. Good because he risked his truck and his safety to stop the guy, and dumb because, well, there's a reason why police take their time during a chase. They wait to make a move when they know it's safe. What he did was dumb because as you can see in the video when he tried to block the ambulance the driver almost went to the other side of the road where there are plenty of oncoming cars that could have been fatally hit. That's why police don't always choose to block suspects during a chase because they are unpredictable and might only do more harm than good.
