Well it just so happens that there's a lot of sociopaths out there who deliberately try to get us to Forfeit our barriers so that they can be granted amnesty into our mind to control us. So what you just said was a logical fallacy and oftentimes something that people who are victims of narcissistic and sociopathic abuse experience. It's called a broken barrier basically where once the barrier that used to keep you safe is broken, it's too much energy to reinstate it to protect you. My mother used to tell me, "Imitation is the highest form of flattery." This was usually in response to my baby sister doing something I did, that was supposed to be "my thing." My mom said it was because she looked up to me. With that being said, if someone is doing or trying something that another culture does, whether it be something that they wear, or cook, or music they create, it is in my mind an homage to the greatness that they are perceiving, a want to experience that thing for themselves. We are all human beings, one would think that an appreciation for one another and the different things that we all bring to the table, would be celebrated, not chastised.

@@higgins_forever As a vegan why would I be offended by what people eat for dinner? 😂The human body was meant for an omnivorous diet. That's why vegan's and vegetarians need to make sure they take supplements that fill in those nutrition gaps. For most vegans I think it's safe to say that we don't really care if someone chooses to eat meat. The problem I find most commonly with being a vegan is people assuming that they need to defend their choice to eat meat to me as if I'm secretly judging them or something; or they assume that all I eat is lettuce which is not true at all. Also as a vegan and on the topic of appropriating other people's food I would never be offended by a non-vegan making vegan cuisine. I encourage people to give it a try it's usually quite tasty.

im qatari living in qatar being an arab, during the world cup I was so happy to see so many tourists enjoying and participating in my culture and wearing our traditional clothes also we wear these traditional clothes for men called ghitra and it's a 3 part head wearing and you got to wear by knowing how to fix it, I was so happy to help show them how they should wear it and how to do it themselves, I felt appreciated and i wish it happens more

Ah yes, omurice... in Japan it is オムライス, in Korea it is 오므라이스. It is fried rice that is wrapped in or topped with a thin, fried, beaten egg, generally topped with ketchup. The name is a portmanteau of the words omelet and rice. Why those words? Why not the Japanese and Korean words? Because omurice is based on western omelets! It started out in the early 20th century in western restaurants in Tokyo. So who is appropriating from who? My opinion though? I'm glad that someone in Japan took a western food concept and made a Japanese based dish. I'm even more happy that Korea made a Koreanized version - the Japanese version IS too runny for my taste while Koreans like more thoroughly cooked meat and eggs.

As a white woman engaged to a Indian-Punjabi man ive been told I’m appropriating Indian culture when I wear traditional clothes. Every time I hear someone say I’m appropriating, I just roll my eyes and feel bad for them as theres bigger fish to fry. There’s literally people out there still being outright racist to Indians or sikhs for wearing turbans . My intentions are pure. Its about embracing the beautiful culture and so I may learn and help pass it on to our future children. Cultural appropriation is thrown around so lightly often. I do think theres situations in which it does cross the line from appreciate to appropriation , but I think its used as an excuse a lot of the time to be rude to white people and its projecting other issues.

So one example I can think of is that right across Europe and Asia there are cabbage rolls vine leaf rolls that vary from country to country. That’s not cultural appropriation, it’s culture spreading and it’s a beautiful thing. From Sarma in Bosnia to Dolmades in Greece, I will eat and enjoy the many different ways it is prepared.

This reminded me of an interaction I had with my aunt when I was 12. She’s South African and moved to the states when she married my uncle but she’s been part of the family pretty much all my life. It was the Fourth of July (like high 90s) and I mentioned something along the lines of “you prefer hot weather right?” She responded “actually no not really” and asked if I thought that because she grew up in Africa. Of course that’s what I thought I was 12 and she was perfectly sweet about it but I remember panicking because I thought I was racist and that she would hate me because I made an offhand assumption about the type of weather she liked based on a fact about where she grew up. I don’t wanna live in a world where people grow up so terrified of offending people that they never bother talking with them.

But where I lived was overcast 80% of the year and on average 50 degrees F. In college, I gained interest in Korean culture because most of my friends were South Korean exchange students. I wore a hanbok many times, learned to play 3 of the 4 percussion instruments in the traditional performance of samulnori, performed traditional fan dance (buchaechum) more times than I can count (and actually taught it to other Koreans). I have eaten numerous amounts of Korean food, painted in traditional Korean styles, and I've cooked Korean dishes for my family and my Korean friends have NEVER been offended (and I don't want to hear the typical argument of "just because 1 or 2 people are okay with it, doesn't mean they speak for the whole group" because I had over 200 Korean friends!) They loved it. They felt touched that I took the time to learn things about their culture, they felt happy that other people were enjoying their food, and they love seeing foreigners in hanboks. They love sharing their culture because they didn't grow up in the United States so they didn't have people brainwashing them that it was a bad thing. I really appreciate their culture and I love learning more about it. I am afraid that people crying "cultural appropriation" will discourage people from trying to learn about and experience and appreciate new cultures and that's sad because for me it has been the greatest joy of my life

The first time I tried sushi I was excited I really thought I was gonna like it. But I didn't. And the chef that prepared it is right in front of me. I was trying to hide the fact that I didn't like it and be polite but I couldn't get it down. Every time I tried to swallow it I started gagging. It was horrible. Tears wear streaming down my face. "Omurice" is Japanese style American/western food. It's part of a bunch of decidedly non-Japanese diner style dishes which are Japanese takes on various foreign foods. Other examples are "appropriated" versions of croquettes, Salisbury steak, and schnitzel. Also, any and all baked breads. Oh, Japanese as well "appropriated" rice. I guess the entire island should just starve out of principle.

From my experience living with an Indian family for 6 months Dosa is supposed to be thin and crispy it made from both lentils and rice and they really like to allow it to ferment for a day or two to give it a sourdough flavor. Dosa I have had is usually made with the fillings cooked into it but I do know they can be made plan and super crispy then served with dipping sauces. But really every single culture I can think of has some version of a pancake which this is.

I've talked to my husband about this. He's Honduran and I'm from The US. Honduran people LOVE to know that other people have come to their country and tried their food. So many people avoid local food, so they love it. My husband's grandma has asked me if I'm going to learn how to dance. Honduran people love food, and they love dancing! Anyway - no one in Honduras is upset about me taking part in, and learning about their culture, but I have warned my husband that people in The US will be.
