Honestly after watching through Classic Who, this is normal by Who standards. I just think they need to slow down the pacing to let the audience take in the insanity.

The more I watch clips from the new series, the more I'm willing to at least give it a chance. I'm sick of riding the hate wave. I want to give this Doctor a proper chance and catch up on what I've missed. Watching the Doctor be more emotionally open is different, but I feel like it needed to happen eventually. He's lived so long and been emotionally distant for so many lives because of all he's seen and done. He got used to putting on a joyful face to keep his companions at ease until his new cycle started with Capaldi, and he just couldn't do it anymore. He got grumpy, introspective and needed to find himself again. (disclaimer: Capaldi is one of my favorite Doctors) I haven't seen much from Jodie Whittaker, but what I have seen shows she's a capable actress. Clips from the 60th anniversary episodes seem to suggest that the Toymaker dredged up a lot of internalized trauma and forced the Doctor to acknowledge it. Now, with Gatwa he seems to be allowing himself to truly feel and to know himself beyond the heroic mask he has to put on for the sake of the universe. And I think that's okay.

For me, the weakest of the season and the one that made me feel like I was watching a show aimed at 10 year olds (it's family entertainment so in a way I guess it is but hey) - unfortunately I was watching it after having negotiated a slot with my wife and teenagers, all of whom I think judged my choice of show after this great new Doctor I'd raved about said "space babies" every chance possible. As a fan I'm tested constantly but come on, work with me here to get new people into it haha

This episode was genuinely unwatchable. I managed to warm up to the doctor by the end of the season somehow. I think he's a fine actor. But literally everything else was plagued by downright lazy and preachy writing. And no, I am not some kind of a bigot for calling uninspired, lazy and preachy writing for what it is.
