John Carpenter got this cause he had a reputation for doing quality work on shoestring budgets. When he said to the producers he could do this on a 300 grand budget in less than 25 days that clinched it, plus the fact his list of demands was low. All he wanted was to be able to write the script, have creative control and his name above the movie title. He wrote the script and Deborah Hill wrote the girls parts along with supervising rewrites, he wrote and scored the music, helped edit as well as directing and did the story boards. For all that he was paid 20 grand.

That was the 1950s version of The Thing. Carpenter's 80s version is a remake (or better said, a re-adaptation of the original novella). Then finally we have the "Remake" timeline or the Rob Zombie's Halloween movies --> Halloween (2007) and Halloween II (2009). Halloween III: Season of the Witch is a standalone movie not related to any Michael Myers shenanigans.

Love that you commented on the look and realism early on. I think it’s because they were limited in budget so there’s more reliance on natural light sources plus it’s all on location instead of studio sets where too many aspects can be manipulated resulting in an uncanny valley effect.

Now you gotta check out Halloween II (1981). It continues on the same night, right after this one. This is one of the greatest films of all time, it's in the congressional library's film registry board. It's a list of films deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" that are recommended for preservation by those holding the best elements for that film, be it motion picture studios, the Library of Congress and other archives, or filmmakers. Around 830 films on that list, out of millions made. Carpenter wrote Myers to be the actual boogeyman. He said he's a human, but he has a supernatural edge. He was only gonna do this one film, and the ending was supposed to scare people as it implies that you can't kill the boogeyman, with them showing all the places he's been in the movie, and his breathing getting heavier. It suggests that he can be everywhere, and nowhere. Another fun fact is that the movie cost $325,000, half of it went to the camera and lenses.

This isn't new. Dracula was a real ladies man. haha. It reminds me of something my female friend told me. She read Anne of Green Gables and there was a scene when Anne and Diana are talking about the kind of man Anne finds attractive. Anne describes a sort of dark, brooding guy and Diana asks if Anne would really want a bad man. Anne tells her something to the affect of, "No, not really. I don't think I'd want a bad man. I think I'd want a man who Could be bad but chooses not to be bad." Then, there are women who have the Florence Nightingale effect because they think they can nurse a man back to health aka Save him from being a bad man and change him through the power of love. It's not just Myers. Characters like Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Kylo Ren and even Pennywise from the recent movies have women falling over themselves. This is true in movies, books, anime, TV shows, etc. There's an actual reason for this, but yeah, it's more popular than most people would believe. haha

Someone also said this but If you’re curious about the series if you plan on watching more or not, the Halloween franchise got rebooted a few times and each other create its own timeline so you can choose either one and it wouldn’t make you question the continuity. Timeline 1 is Halloween (1978), Halloween 2 (1981), Halloween 4,5, and 6. Timeline 2 is the H20 timeline. The films are Halloween (1978), Halloween 2 (1981), Halloween H20, and Halloween Resurrection. Timeline 3 is the Rob Zombie reboot from 2007 and its sequel from 2009. Lastly timeline 4 is the current one and the films are Halloween (1978), Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills, and Halloween Ends. There is a movie called Halloween 3: Season of the Witch but you can skip that one cause Michael isn’t in that one because they tried to make a different story each movie but it flopped because fans wanted Michael back. XD

Sexism in horror is more of a side effect of copy cats and wtudio cash grabs typically. A lot of horror films, their first entries are actually interesting female protagonists. But when a film like Halloween is a big box office success, a lot of those trying to get some of that $ rushed out films that lacked a lot of what this film had. More boobs, more sexist, less interesting protagonists, more gore, less effort in music, directing, lighting, acting, etc. And especially in the 80's studios just wanted to make as much $ as fast as possible and made sequels and copy cats that again were more sexist. Even older horror in the beginning of hollywood started off rather less sexist but when studio executives gained more and more power more sexist films resulted. Typically. Sexism in horror almost is a side effect of cost efficient ways to cash grab in later installments

yeah the scene with no one helping her is a really good example of the bystander effect. I read somewhere that if you actually want help you would be advised to scream : FIRE !!! , since humans are instinctually more prone to react to that. Its also useful to engage the person directly and descibe them when calling out to them. For example : ,,You in the yellow jacket. Please help" since that way people dont have the instinct to expect someone else to help sincce its specific

No one helped her. depends on if the situation happened before the filming of the movie or after, but it could be directly inspired by it.

​@@Xehanort10Yeah, I believe they thought Laurie was doing a prank because it's Halloween and teens tend to cut up around. Laurie thought her friends her pranking her. She probably even thought Michael was pranking which is why she stopped thinking about it later in a day after getting high, when Tommy was expressing his concerns. Even the sheriff mentioned the teen antics he stumbled across when he met back up with Loomis. I think any other night, especially in a small town we're everyone pretty much knows everyone, Laurie would have gotten help. That's one of the reasons why Michael coming out on Halloween is the perfect time for him. So many things can easily gets brushed off because simply because of the holiday itself and what it tends to obtain...

Halloween is my favorite classic horror movie. I grew up in suburbia and neighbors are too noisy to ignore someone screaming. They are calling the cops if they don’t think you live in the neighborhood. Halloween 2 is more action where this one is more tension.

pgreen: A Lot of people miss this entire background of the movie. Once we hit 1978, there are various characters that talk about how much of a hassle pranksters are on Halloween night. It's to the extent that Sheriff Brackett is far more concerned with tracking down pranksters annoying the townspeople and causing a large amount of damage than worrying about an escaped mental patient that's been nearly vegetative for 15 years. Throughout the night, there's much being said about the problems the teens and kids being are causing than Myers. Even the sheriff believes Myers is the weaker threat. So, the neighbors aren't ignoring Laurie Strode's screams and pleas. They truly think they're being targeted for the usual Haddonfield shenanigans that normally happens every Halloween night; so, they're ignoring her and the younger kids screaming because they don't want to deal with the pranks. That's my take. haha

My second favorite horror film next to Scream. This is an important movie in history because this as well as Texas Chainsaw Massacre started the modern day slasher genre that soon create other icons such as Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Chucky, etc, with Michael Myers kind of presented as the king of the slasher villains. The original movie while tamed for todays standards, still is a scary movie because of the slow building/suspense and how realistic it is before becoming ridiculous and supernatural for the sequels which are hit or misses. Lol Was once just suppose to be a low budget one off film became a major franchise.

For me, what's most interesting about Michael is the uncertainty about what he is. The way i see t he's a force of nature, he makes no distinctions about killing, he is basically instinctive. The pure evil that was once human. And this is addressed in the current films, from 2018 to Halloween Ends. The more he kills, the stronger and more supernatural he becomes and less human too. If you watch the next few films you'll see that he begins to perform increasingly humanly impossible acts as his body count increases.

Just so you know…. The Halloween series has 4 different storylines. 1. H1 and H2 2. H1, H2, H4, H5, H6 3. H1, H2, H H20, H Resurrection 4. H1, H 2018, H Kills, H Ends The Halloween series originally meant to be a anthology which is why Halloween 3 is a different story. But when H3 was released they realized people wanted more Michael Myers. Also it’s 2 complete remakes by a director named Rob Zombie who came out with H 2007 and H2 2009.

That's an awesome point about suburbia, guys! I never thought about that!! I'll say that the scariest thing about Michael Myers, to me, is that he could really be anyone. The grave keeper even mentions to Loomis, "Every town has a story like that", because monsters don't live under the bed. They live just like you and me, and they COULD live right next door... They can blend into a crowd, and you wouldn't know, until it was too late-- At the grocery store, at a concert, or even on the other side of your door... On Halloween. I read this in a Spider-Man comic once, and it's stuck with me for life-- To paraphrase, "... Evil is the thought behind a face, and it could look just the same as yours." I also think that there's an argument to be made that Michael Myers is more of a force of nature in this movie, and that the REAL monster, the real HORROR, is represented in the inaction taken by those around our two protagonists, Laurie and Loomis. You guys even mentioned how when Laurie screamed for help, (And I'll add, on the ONE night of the year people are all but guaranteed to be home) they turned their lights off and did nothing. In essence, their INACTION is just as deadly as Michael Myers, himself. They might as well be tried as accomplices. To paraphrase, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil, is for good to do nothing.”

The detached laundry room is one indication that this was shot in LA, not Illinois, as it’s too cold in Illinois to have detached laundry rooms. Basements are for that, and there's no way mom's gonna shlep through two feet of snow to toss a load in. Another sign is when they’re driving through town, and you can see mountains in the background. Illinois is known as the “Prairie State” for a reason. Just nitpicking though-----Carpenter and his crew did a great job of transforming a desert climate into autumn in Illinois, even bringing in extra leaves to spread around and painting them fall colors to boost the fall effect.

Their are different interpretations of michael myers in the films 1 2 4 5 6 is one timeline and then their is 1 2 7 8 and the new version 1 2018 kills and ends there is also the RZ remakes. The comics and novels are also good My favourite interpretation is the 2018 timeline but I also love the the original timeline

this was a marvelous reaction. and I loved meg's odd connection to Michael-I am right there with her! I have a good pal who is as HALLOWEEN obsessed as I am. and the obsession started back in '78 when it was released and we were just teen-agers. I am a gay man in my middle 50's, and we've had a long standing joke that I am having a secret and torrid affair with Michael Meyers, and that only I really understand Michael, and I am the only one who can talk to him. (which is hilarious and ludicrous. of course.) and it makes no sense that Michael would be gay. nothing in the storyline remotely goes there, but because I am gay, well I just brought Michael over to this new life. so the idea that Michael could also camp along with the best of us-is again-completely hilarious and ludicrous. I loved your excellent discussion at the end. really good stuff there. there is a great podcast called "the alarmist" it is very interesting, fun and funny. they do a wonderful episode on HALLOWEEN and Michael Meyers. They say very similar things about the suburbs, and the dangers of how the suburbs can really create a profound disconnection to life and to other people. and yes, we are seeing those dangers and that damage everyday in culture nowadays. the gun epidemic alone is proof of this. I am a huge fan. the woman who created and hosts it, Rebecca Delgado Smith is really funny and fun. she gets wonderful people to come on the podcast to discuss different "tragedies" and "who is to blame". the thing I love about this podcast is that they have a way of finding the ridiculous humor and absurdity in everything they are discussing, yet they are never disrespectful or casual even in how they discuss each event. and they do a nice mix of actual real tragedies ( -like the titanic sinking or the triangle factory fire horror.) vs. tragic situations in movies, (HALLOWEEN, CARRIE, THE SHINING being examples) or kind of mock-tragic events that have actually happened throughout history--but there was not a huge loss of life or such (something like Woodstock '99 being an example of a real life event that was a failure and a mess-but not a tragedy tragedy.) when I listen, I feel like I am hanging out with people I would be friends with, and that is fun. I particularly love the titanic and triangle factory fire episodes. also the siegfried and roy episode is amazing. and I always learn something interesting as well. like I had no idea that on that maiden voyage of the titanic-the guy who was the lookout-the literal lookout-the guy up there tasked with keeping constant watch on the sea as the ship ventures forth-that guy actually FORGOT HIS BINOCULARS when he came to work that first day. FORGOT HIS BINOCULARS. amazing little known fact. it is not why the titanic hit the iceberg-but it didn't help! and is kind of a metaphor for everything about the titanic in a way! anyway-enjoy the podcast. and I will keep checking out your channel. thanks!

"Why is he doing this?" --> That's why you watch new, exciting movies: To find out exactly that. In real life, unfortunately, people (--> children, adults, teenagers) are murdered all the time - and every day - by completely "crazy" killers ... "Why is little Michael Myers running around in front of the house?" --> Why not? I was often right outside the house when I was a little boy. Even in the evenings. "Why doesn't he turn on a light in the kitchen?" --> I don't always turn on the light in the kitchen when I go to the fridge. I think the plot is absolutely understandable. However, even on the 250th (approximately) rewatch of the movie, it still drives me crazy that Laurie keeps dropping/throwing away the stabbing weapons. ;-) On the other hand, the tension has to be kept high in this legendary, great horror thriller. The end of the movie, when you hear Myers breathing and different dark places are shown one after the other, means nothing other than that Michael Myers can be anywhere... 😱 😯

The sex stuff has always been like an ugh for me in horror films when its shown in every one. But at the same time I don't mind it if theres a reason. People dump on the Friday the 13th franchise for this and while I think objectification could be part of it, people don't acknowledge also the fact Jason almost drowned because the teenagers who were meant to be watching the kids were abandoning their responsibility specifically so they could get laid, sort of like in this film. So its clear that Jason has a specific hatred for sex as well as killing anyone that enters his path because it was sex that caused the teenagers to allow him to being bullied and didnt stop what happened to him.

I like how you're a thirsty Michael sympathizer all the way up until he kills the dog. 😄 Carpenter chose to utilize the heavy contrast of light and shadow to keep Michael obscured because he was only ever referred to initially as 'The Shape'. Regarding Michael's apparent supernatural power, it's theorized (though unconfirmed to the extent of my knowledge) that Michael feeds on his kills (not literally), but that's to say his kills give him the power to endure the physical punishment he absorbs. That's why sometimes he can take fatal injuries and keep going without stopping, while other times he 'dies' and takes a few moments to recharge and come back to life - his power is determined by how much he's killed to that point, and the amount of time since his last kill. All that said, if you're going to watch the sequels canonically, you'll have to ignore every Halloween movie until Halloween 2018, as it and its two sequels retcon (for better and for worse) every previous movie except for the original.

Actually the only Halloween films you two need to watch after the original, is Halloween 2018 Which takes place 40 Years Later, then Halloween Kills and then Halloween Ends, it finally tell the entire Jamie Lee Curtis Story! All the other Halloween Movie are now NON-CANON. However, the original Halloween 2 is very good with Jamie Lee Curtis, Halloween 4 and Somewhat Halloween H2O 20 Years Later.....

Love this guys. This movie is one of the greats! Just to put something in perspective: John Carpenter had no intention of making a sequel to Halloween. The various shots at the end with the sounds of breathing were to symbolize that this "evil force" could be anywhere at any time and could not be killed. Honestly, the sequels have only served to dilute this masterpiece.

Yeah a lot of horror films particularly slasher films in late 70's/80's have what scream parodied, the hero virgin trope. Those who practice unsafe sex or premarital sex were likely killed to re-enforce to teens to paractice safe or only marital sex

This movie kind created the trope, except the trope wasn't the original intent of John Carpenter. Yes, sex led to their deaths, but it wasn't why they were killed. It was simply the fact that the others were distracted with other stuff (one of which happened to be sex, as hormonal teens tend to do) instead of their surroundings. Laurie wasn't focused on the dance, boys, and other stuff, even though she wanted to be, in a sense, like her friends. It was her not being distracted that saved her life, not because she was a virgin. Unfortunately, the point was misinterpreted into a virgin/survival/final girl thing that most slasher films took and ran with it, becoming a trope and now considered the first rule of surviving horror movies...

Discovered this channel from this video and I LOVE your sense of humor and analysis, but anime/superhero stuff just isn't my thing... it would be cool if you guys maybe integrated classic horror into your regular schedule though. I'd recommend starting in order though with modern stuff starting with Psycho (a proto-slasher) and then Texas Chainsaw Massacre (either proto or the first) to get an idea of how this evolved into Halloween which was probably the first example of a full modern slasher (though arguably Black Christmas has a say in that). And YES, the originals were actually BRILLIANT, it was only the copycats that turned their original ideas into cliches that tarnished their reputation. A good example involves the death of the two teenagers in this film that just had sex (and his sister). They served mostly to scare teenagers (and like you guys said, it's scary because you're vulnerable much like how they intensified the action film, Die Hard, by having the protagonist be barefoot). It wasn't until around the time of Friday the 13th that filmmakers were consciously punishing teenagers for having sex, but now people look back on this film and think it's doing the same thing, when it's not. Similarly, a lot of people unfairly criticize old 1970s slashers because the characters behave stupidly (e.g., "Why would she go there, when...") ...forgetting that first, the characters don't know they're in a horror film, and second, that not only were the cliches in 70s horror NEW and NOT cliches, but the whole concept of serial killers was a relatively new thing to mass media. Both Psycho and Texas were inspired by ED Gein who became notorious in the late 50s, but it wasn't like how it is now where there are entire shows, podcast, novels, films, comics based on these people. This is also why we used to let children walk around on their own (which to be fair, statistically speaking, WAS safe seeing that the likelihood of any kid being kidnapped or murdered was always REALLY low). The characters in these films didn't grow up knowing all the tricks like yelling fire, putting your keys between your knuckles, or always checking the backseat of your car first (I'm sure this film popularized that, but people still unfairly criticize Annie for not doing the same when again, she didn't grow up watching herself or other victims getting killed in a slasher film).

The great underlying theme with the Halloween/Micheal Meyers films is the nature vs nurture of evil in people. Could a serial killer be redeemed or are they innately evil. Do bad people like the bullies deserve to be killed hence the first person pov. Puts us the viewers in the plave of the killer

@@Rocket1377 in this film it is clear to the audience that Micheal is the boogey man or the devil's eyes or the shape as he's referred to. But to start the film with that intro does raise the questions to viewers as seen in this reaction, why is Micheal killing. His kills are so eerily odd. Precise but spontaneous. He clearly stalks but also appears to not have very elaborate planned out murders for his victims. Even his MO like killing baby sitters ergo called the baby sitter killer and their bfs does make viewers ask , why. Why does he not appear to kill other kids? Why does he tilt his head almost in admiration of his kill of a victim. Why does he eat a dog. The film if it wanted to ONLY make it so he's born innately evil could've removed that doubt but actively chooses with how Micheal behaves to put doubt in the audience view. Later films just elaborate on one side or the other, nature vs nurture.

I suspect a lot of the misogyny in films late in the big horror boom came from the fact that a lot of the early slasher villains like Michael Myers or the killers in Dario Argento movies were motivated by misogyny or discomfort with desire for women. Over time, as the victim characters cycled out and the killers remained as the faces of the franchises, the films came to identify more with the killers than the victims, including those misogynistic motivations.
