Man, I really miss Letterman of this era. He was such an unusual host, quick mind, offbeat, it says something that this is still entertaining without feeling dated 3 decades later.

Thank you so much for posting this. It is no wonder he was so smitten with her. I can't believe I spent six hours watching this over Memorial Day weekend yet couldn't stop and felt a hint of sadness there was no more. Then to finally see Tony at the end and the man looked as if he would rather be anywhere but there. So in honor of Dave and Meg here are 10 places Tony was thinking he would rather be. 10. The landfill 9. Turkish prison 8. Unemployment line 7. Having multiple wisdom teeth pulled 6. The Arctic circle without a coat 5. Replacing urinal cakes at Lollapalooza 4. Walking barefoot across the grill at Steak and Shake 3. Getting lazer eyelid removal. 2. Pushing a broom in Chernobyl 1. Sitting with his doctor discussing his ED

His daytime talk show in 1980 (The Letterman Show, prior to "Late Night") was even more goofy in the same way with running gags, recurring themes, peripheral characters, etc. It didn't work well as a daytime show so NBC offered him a nighttime slot ('82 - '93). As he got older he got grumpier (don't we all?) and less energetic and adventuresome on his show.

"Can't blame him", really? - she seems nice enough, but she's more than a little awkward. @@maxmerton Acceptability, at least in this case, is based on opinion and preference. In my opinion, Letterman was fascinated by Parsont's incredible intelligence and autonomy. I can't see any other reason why he spent three years giving her a special place in his program. Focusing on the fact of his being white or being privileged is in this case not the core of what is happening. It is valuable to see how an intelligent and self-possessed woman is being respected and given a public audience so that old prejudices have a chance to wither in the face of excellent example.
@maxmerton
@maxmerton 3 жыл бұрын
@@david203 respected?! Don’t me make laugh. He didn’t care about her at all. As for *not* being about privilege, it’s amazing how often that claim is made by those in a position of privilege. But how generous of you to describe a woman as intelligent and self-possessed. She has a job. Millions of women have jobs, FFS. Do you think she requested or wanted a public audience? He wasn’t making her dream of fame come true; he was being a perverted show-off.

Because no individual - woman or otherwise - is likely worth staking a career on the gamble at that level. Unwanted flirtation is seen as "unwanted" before it's seen as "flirtation" at this point, and talk shows are both "work" FIRST for the one targeted as well as the one initiating. Furthermore, there's often no definitive way to tell if you're getting on someone's nerves until (usually) "she" is pointedly annoyed, and by then it's "too late". Don't blame the hosts.lol

It's nice that her coworkers seemed to be happy about the whole thing and playing along. I mean it's good exposure for the company and the books, but to see one of your coworkers basically win the lottery and then be treated biweekly to incredible gifts and experiences and having all kinds of silly things happen in the office, I can see how some might have gotten annoyed. But it definitely beats boring office life, so maybe they were all excited for her.

they were lucky to find her - so sweet and humble, never tried to be a star and let it go to her head. Rupert Jee was the same thing years later.

Dave-Meg trivia - they both ended up working for the same company. Letterman's show moved to CBS in 1993, and Meg's company, Simon and Schuster, was bought by CBS (Viacom) in 1994.

Or maybe there was another side to her that was a turn off to Tony. We only know her from these segments. Yeah, she SEEMS nice. She's in publicity so she has to be nice on the phone and when Dave calls, she knew she was gonna be on camera, so she has to act nice for that too. We don't know her private side. Maybe she had totally different bitchy side to her. Most people have that side to them.

Ok, I know it was Dave's move to the Ed Sullivan Theater that ultimately doomed the running bit, but it's still amusing to me that Tony finally turning up in person also marked the last time we ever saw Meg. Also amusing to me is that years later, Tony would no longer be in the picture and Meg ended up marrying a guy named Dave.

I remember clearly that Meg was invited onto WNBC's "Live at Five" around this time. Sue Simmons was particularly vicious in reminding young Meg that she wasn't a big deal and was just a civilian who got lucky. She seemed to acknowledge her own meanness by segment end, but tears couldn't have been far off from her guest.. That alone would have been enough to end the innocence that informed this wonderful running bit. I remember the birthday marching band segment with particular fondness as I lived only blocks away. This was very much like 50's television with some hip revisions.

@@dongiller Aw. I was hoping you might have it. I remember Sue, noting the wounds she had administered, saying something akin to "We in broadcasting can be mean...". Big help, Sue. It was actually a little shocking.

It's funny how after Tony showed up in the last bit Dave never continued the bit. I think the look on Tony's face at the end spoke volumes! I've never understood how you can be with a beautiful, smart woman and never propose marriage. That blows my mind! You screwed up, Tony!
