I love the super smooth sprite rotation in this game, shows what the mega drive was capable of when the programmers could actually program. Europe was where the true skill was.
@digimaks Жыл бұрын
Yeah I noticed that too! I see the rotation is very smooth- seems like they are using sprite hardware resampling to achieve that, instead of creating 6 frames of sprite rotation animation.
@notsuoh16Bit Жыл бұрын
@@digimaks oh yeah, way more that 6 frames, it's so smooth it must be a truly dedicated software algorithm or some trick with the VDP debug abilities, the one that team Titan were able to take advantage of, I'm not sure, but it's amazing to see.
@victorbranco79288 ай бұрын
Actually it is software done sprite rotation.
@notsuoh16Bit8 ай бұрын
That makes no difference, actually it is still sprite rotation, some systems need a single comment to get a system to do it with hardware, others need a software engine designed and run while doing other computation, I feel the software engine really shows the power of the hardware and power management of the coder, also Team Titan also found some forgotten hardware abilities in the VDP that allowed for frame buffering to achieve scaling and rotation, butter smooth.

Oh, nostalgy!! Whats a MUSIC, whats a graphic! Chris Huelsbeck just an FM/PSG-magician like Jesper Kyd, Howard Drossin, Tony Tallarico, Matt Furnis ... First time when I discovered this incredible game I thought it was made in Japan ! The music (melodies, scales, chords, etc.), graphics (a-la manga faces), robots, cyborgs, bosses, ideas, the story line, cut scenes - everything reminded me the high quality Japanese games. Especially that alarm warning "Emergency!" that I heard once in another wonderful super-action "ALIEN SOLDIER". For the second time I saw the logo "Factor 5" in the friend`s Game Boy game "Contra the legacy of war" but it was absolutely another story =) So love that second BGM starting from 10:14, just gives me chills! The fist boss at 23:26 is a great example of art trumping tech: This boss fight on Genesis looks much better than on SNES, and purely because in the SNES version they used Mode 7 just so they could rotate and scale the fist a couple of times. And, as a result, it ended up with a much more simple and boring background due to the fact the SNES could only really do the most simple stuff with the rest of the background and or use all sprites to make it look more detailed, which was pretty costly. They should have never used the dumb Mode 7 scaling effect and just went with a great looking level and fight, that could have looked even nicer on SNES with more colours and extra background layers and so on.
@Bloodreign13 жыл бұрын
At the time it came out, scaling and rotating were absolutely mindblowing, didn't really see it outside of Namco arcade games, and some Taito arcade games.
@inceptional3 ай бұрын
@@Bloodreign1 Well, true. But, if they were going to insist on using Mode 7 there, I really think they should have put a lot more time into adding stuff to make the background look more detailed too. They had plenty of room for using sprites for fake background elements, along with changing the backdrop colour per scanline, and even using the two colour windows as well.

TSA Retro In the amiga the background parallax in the first level was provided by copper; i wonder if they took in consideration the idea of a repeating sprite like in Risky woods or maybe there were technical difficulties and/or time constraints; not too satisfied on how in the wrecked city level they decided for a bland dual playfield and a blandest palette for the foreground and, finally, the vertical changing color copperlist used on the alien world has been recycled in Lionheart later, but with better results.
