This is by far the most undderatted Genesis game of al time. Ive been playing since I was 6 I am now 35. I never met anyone who has even played it without me forcing them to check it out. Definitely in my top 5 of all time on the console.

@@HowlingMoonCinemas Nope. Happened fairly commonly, and I was speaking to Jaz Rignall about it, who confirmed it was a conscious thing what SEGA did to cement the home market. Afterburner got gameplay tweaks, Gauntlet got an entire new Quest mode added, Mercs got an Original mode added, Golden Axe got extra levels, DJ Boy had a complete gameplay overhaul etc. etc.

What a bizarre game. It's like a fever dream. A Russian tokusatsu superhero battling cyborgs and mutants through a pastiche of South America, Easter Island, and Eastern Europe. Looks like fun to play, though.

THIS is the game that I remember but couldn't think of the name of. All I remembered was you could shoot things, one of the bosses was a giant suit of armor, and the final boss was fought at the statue of liberty. I recognized it right from when the game's title screen came up. You could do backflips and just like in Biohazard Battle - collect powerups for your weapon. I had to watch the entire playthrough just to relive everything. Man these classic games looked hard. Hm... that "giant" suit of armor boss looks smaller than I remember. I only remember fighting the foot of the guy and it taking up half the screen - that's how big it was. I guess the boss was just such a scary bastard that that's how I remembered it. False memory I suppose.

Now THIS game brings back some interesting childhood memories! I still remember how kick-ass the music was throughout (and the graphics were awesome for a 16-bit side-scrolling platform back then). I also remember how difficult it was to complete it...that was until my younger brother and his friend used a Game Genie on it to get to the end (lol!). Fun times, for sure... ;-D

The theme of the first level was used for most levels in the original arcade version of Atomic Runner Chelnov. The arcade version of the track is more suited as a base for an orchestral arrangement. The Genesis/Mega Drive version is more suited as a base a band arrangement.

cool play by SCHLAUCHI! one of my all time MD/Genesis games, I'm glad Data East decided on the changes here from the arcade original...it made for a much better game. rather than tastelessly capitalize on the ever-tragic Chernobyl incident, they opted for a new, more comic-book-style story, polished the graphics greatly, and the music got the greatest improvement of the whole package. proof that when done by true experts, Genesis did...& so did Data East!

That... was odd... I mean, the story... what? I mean, most games might have had that part of the intro where it went "He Fought The Bad Guys Long And Hard But Eventually Got Caught" bit as, well, the first part of the game, then at the end of a level have the player get caught and break free in the next level. It... served no purpose. Also, the sister... What happened to her? It made it quite clear she was taken away, with no mention of a death or anything.

The arcade story makes even less sense from what I saw. One "windy" (not windy day) some kind of disaster in a nuclear plant gives a guy called Chelnov atomic powers. Then it doesn't say anything about who he's fighting, he just breaks out of a glass tube and starts wrecking everything.

True, and that's a lot more than I can believe anyone "barely conscious" could say. The ending is just as embarrassing. After one boss theme for the rest of the game (and almost every other Data East game) the final boss suddenly has separate music for each phase (none of it even that impressive compared to the stage music). The actual end text is so triumphalist even most ancient Greeks would have laughed at it for that reason alone.

If this game were to get a modern 2.5D remake, it would be based off this version (Sega Genesis version). If Chelnov were playable in Super Smash Bros, his moveset would be based off of Fighter’s History: Mizoguchi Kiki Ippatsu, with Smash attacks using his three spike ball projectile, and he would use a tether for grabs and recovery.

The Genesis/Megadrive port has better graphics, presentation, sound and gameplay than the arcade original! It's not so rare that a 16bit console port is better than its arcade counterpart, look at Turtles in Time and Killer Instinct on SNES or even Punch out and Contra on NES for example!

Data East knew no one would play a direct port, that home console gamers wanted more for their money, so they had it improved for home release. Crazy thing is, there would've been a Saturn version, but it got cancelled (it's ISO is downloadable though), and unlike the Genesis port, it was a direct port of the arcade game.

Yes exactly. Data East were Inspired a lot by the Russians just look at the Karnov Adventures they also made he appeared in like 3 or four Games I know of Bad Dudes included as one of the level Bosses.
