This is the sort of game that is needed to keep your gaming skills and reflexes sharpened. As frustratingly daunting as it can be, I feel that I can take on the toughest games after I've played it. Any progression of note in a game like this, makes me feel far more fulfilled than the games which spoon feed you today. It's place in history is assured because of the technical prowess on offer here. Definitely, if you could own 100 Genesis/Mega Drive games, this should be among them.

This game really showcased the fact that mode 7 type effects could be done easily in software on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive without any slowdown and no special chips needed in the cartridge. Also showcased how amazing Genesis chiptunes could be when sequenced from a competent composer.
@Prizrak-hv6qk4 жыл бұрын
If only the game was better balanced as far as difficulty and not so repetitive. Some of these levels drag on for way too long. Otherwise, the game feels like what happens when Amiga demo masters finally master the Genesis hardware. Genesis been putting out amazing chip tunes since release but in Japanese-made games. This was one of the first Western games that dropped the GEMS driver rubbish and caught up to the likes of Koshiro and Sakimoto when it comes to music quality. Although, Jesper accomplished this layered music by taking up all of the 6 FM (+1 PCM) channels, leaving only PSG for the sound effects, making the game feels sparse when it comes to sound effects in some areas. Koshiro's custom driver combined FM and PSG layers for the music, leaving some FM (+PCM) for good sound effects in games like SOR2 and Beyond Oasis.

This is more of "line scroll" than "mode 7"
@Bloodreign13 жыл бұрын
There's no Mode 7 at all in this game, everything is programming tricks fooling you into thinking it is. Mode 7 at that time wasn't possible on the console (devs these days that like to tinker with the hardware and software, can do it, but their tools are also far more advanced than back in the 90's). It wasn't Mode 7 that caused slowdown on the SNES, it was incompetent programming by many developers. When the young devs today, the same ones tinkering with Genesis stuff, got their hands on SNES games, they showed the games can run slowdown free on a real SNES (Gradius 3 is one such game that they have already done, having to apply yet another patch because the game then ran too fast, they had to sort of slow it back down). The soundtrack to this game however, is very unfitting of this type of game. You expect a soundtrack like this in a regular run and gun game, or a shoot em up, not a Batman game. Really ruins the mood that this game tries to set.
@tonmaster1892 жыл бұрын
@@Bloodreign1 I have to disagree...Mode 7 was possible at that time but in low resolution which was unpleasant for regular game compared to snes ones. About soundtrack it fits very well in this game because it is run n gun game. Batman game itself is that don't fit very well in this genre.
@rafaellima832 жыл бұрын
This game was coded by a single guy, incredibly enough... who also worked on Batman the Movie .... on the... Amiga. Also, most western games made in EUROPE didn't use the GEMS driver, but usually the one made by Shaun Hollingworth, or a custom-made one (Like Chris Huelsbeck) Even though this was made by a USA-based studio, most of its staff were actually european guys, people who indeed had experience on the Amiga demo scene and stuff like that (like Jesper Kyd) And I feel most people on those comments have no idea of what "Mode 7" means.

This game is simultaneously hardcore and very easy. It punishes you for advancing too fast, as you will be overwhelmed with enemies that take lots of damage. SNES never could do this that way, as in those (and other) games.
