I have no idea how building managers can get away with this, because not only does lower hydraulic oil levels cause a rough ride. But what they are doing at the same time is damaging the pump unit which could put the elevator out of service completely!

I think the hydraulic oil has to be replaced about once a year because it probably gets thin just like most engines do from the heat, especially in the likes of America or European countries like Spain and Italy which have hot summers most of the time. When it gets thin, there’s probably not enough pressure going into the hydraulic pipe and I think this can lead to air getting into it, causing it to air lock. You notice that a lot of the lifts / elevators only get bad when it reaches the top floor.

The lifts where i live made a horrendous noise at times. We got new lifts and one broke within 8 days of being put into service. Great 😂

What’s the oil for?

Traction elevators use pulleys to pull the elevator up, but hydraulic elevators use large pistons to push the elevator up. It goes up when oil is pumped into them, but if there isn’t enough oil, the pump pumps in air to compensate which creates vibration. I don’t think it’s dangerous, but it probably isn’t good for the components.
