It's really bad to keep riding when they're low on oil. The pumps were designed to transfer liquid, not air. It can cause irreparable damage if it runs like that too long... and that would most likely result in a premature modernization. Which is not only sucky for people who like older elevators, but it costs a lot of money, too!

I saw a video on You Tube (sadly it's been taken down) of an Otis Gear-less traction DC machine from the old days which failed due to overheating in the machine room. Had to be taken apart, amateur had to be completely rewound, induction coils replaced as well. I I believe it took some six or more weeks.
@TXMNElevators5 жыл бұрын
Well it's okay to ride it once, or even twice, but you don't want to do it a lot, I agree. It may not cause a complete mod though, it probably will only involve a pump replacement, if anything.
@LordVoltRod2c5 жыл бұрын
Those pumps are very expensive to replace. The best solution is for the oil to be analyzed for 1.viscosity 2.water 3.Particle Count 4.Acidity 5.Varnish or Sludge(membrane patch colorimetry test) Varnish or sludge causes control valve issues leading to elevator leveling problems. Pure clean oil is the best solution to extend the life of the hydraulic elevator. Particles in the oil lead to wear down of operational parts.

Also can lead to over heating of the pump meaning emergency cut off of electricity to pump to prevent fire. Now you get to be "stuck in the elevator".

Do you always report this dangerous condition? Has it caused you to be stuck? Why doesn't it take itself out of service?

You should report the others too. It is cheaper to catch the problem as soon as possible.

It's not particularly dangerous to the riders, even if it's hard on the pump - most controllers since at least the 1970s or so are equipped with a timer that will shut the elevator down if it spends too long trying to move and never gets to its destination. For traction elevators, they will usually just stop immediately and shut down, but hydraulic elevators will (since low oil is likely the problem) return to the lowest floor, cycle the doors, and shut down. Note that the elevators in this video didn't trip this, since they were only sucking air for a little bit and it didn't slow the elevator down enough for this timer to expire. The exact name for this varies between manufacturers - Kone controllers will report "Drive time supervision elapsed (fault 00 01)", MCE will give some variant of "motor limit timer fault", and I'm sure everyone else has their own name for it.

Eight years ago I lived in an apartment building 4 floors hydraulic elevator I remember one Sunday the cab began to shutter trying to reach the 4th floor. I called the Emergency # reported it, this was unsafe for everyone in the building. The site manager called me back, said I suspected the power unit or valve was malfunctioning , and I would make up "out of service" signs, posted them on each landing. Elevator was out of service for 2-3 days, turned out the pump impeller had to be replaced.
