@@Apotheosister They have varying degrees of leniency. Some are VERY unforgiving even after multiple playthroughs (Mega Man and Bass comes to mind) but others can be very generous to newcomers (MM4 has one of the highest spawn rates of Extra Lives in the series, if I recall.) The X series also tends to be slightly more lenient, but that's just because X has a little more mobility options than Mega Man has.

This is a good review, it's nice to see a level-headed approach to a dated game. It'd be easy to rip on this by comparing it to modern games, but it's nice to see such a thought out analysis. It's easy to forget that this game was made back in a time using maths and paper.

For a game of this era, it feels like the devs were trying to genuinely make fun levels and pave the way for what would be considered good design later. They didn’t get there completely, but I think you can do a lot worse when it comes to early NES games. Like Ghosts n’ Goblins, which I typically refer to as “RNG: The Game”.
@OnlineVideoSurfer
@OnlineVideoSurfer 3 жыл бұрын
@@cubedmelons876 I agree. It reminds me of the original Adventure Island in that way too, in that there clearly was a lot of love and thought put into specific levels - even with the repeating layouts - but the difficulty and design decisions probably make it impenetrable to many new players compared to the sequels.

The thing about the points system being in Mega Man 1 but not any of the other Mega Man games is that, it's most likely a holdover from arcade games. Capcom had pretty much exclusively made games for arcades, and Mega Man was actually their first game specifically made for a home console. I will say, at least for the NES games, it took them a while to correct some of the issues in Mega Man 1, like the spike in difficulty towards the end, or one weapon being way better than the rest. Though thankfully they never made the mistake of letting you straight up miss a required power up again.

It's mainly just up to the person. I'm someone who adores when a game has lots of movement options, so playing the Megaman games before 3 feels stiff and uncomfortable. If someone isn't very comfortable with large difficulty spikes or endurance runs, I can totally get encouraging them to start with one of the softer games in the series and then returning once they've gotten used to Megaman's usual tricks.

Honestly it's always been dumb to me to compare 1 and 2. I get why people do it but it's kind of unfair. Usually a first game in a series sets the golden standard. But 1 did not do that. 2 did. So it ultimately amounts to what is basically telling a baby it's first step was not as good as it's second. Which is obvious to anyone. And even then. 1 fucks up enough on it's own merit without needing to compare it to 2.

This was an incredible review. As a huge fan of Mega Man, I can’t wait to see your opinion on the rest of the classic series. Especially the last two game boy games. They’re underrated in my opinion.

I feel like Pikasprey would absolutely LOVE the Battle Network series. I remember hearing somewhere that the devs tried to capitalize on the popularity of both Pokemon and Yugioh, and created the battle system for the BN games from the mindset of collecting and customizing. Easily my favorite Megaman series. Hopefully we get a collection announced soon.

Indeed. BN is a Pokémon clone and a pretty good one at that.

I'm still shocked at how good the pixel art aesthetic of Megaman looks, to make something that pops so well, with clear silhouettes and dynamic poses running in such a limited hardware. Add on top of that the replayability focus and alternate weapons being available on the fly, this game was really ahead of its time.

From what I can tell, Mega Man 1 was developed on different hardware compared to the other five NES games (because Nintendo actually slowly upgraded their cartridges over time, that much I know for certain). The result is, the devs had FAR less ROM and were making the game on a completely different engine. Mega Man 2 didn't just tweak a lot of series conventions (8 bosses instead of six, no more enemies in the antechamber, etc.) it also sanded down the rough edges on a moment-to-moment game engine level too

Glad to have you onboard. Hope you enjoy your stay. 19:03 Personally, I prefer the bosses being spread out throughout the final stages, rather than the typical capsule boss rush. Fun fact, the first entry of the main Megaman series (MM1, X1, and Zero 1) all do this, before doing the capsule thing, with one exception being Megaman & Bass, which also spreads them out.

To explain the horrifying behavior of the Footholder robots, how they're programmed is that their physical hitbox is a tad shorter then their sprite, by like, 3 pixels, and an invisible platform is attached to the top that follows them, using the same behavior as the Magbeam, what happens is that when they move up, because the platform follows them, rather then being part of their existence, it lags behind a tiny bit and causes you to clip the enemy and flinch through them Another funky behavior as such is that the game treats MegaMan standing on the Magbeam as "airborne" for aerial momentum calcs, which is why when you step off it, MegaMan tends to fall disturbingly fast if you didn't jump, the game has been seeing him as airborne and building momentum the entire time you walked across the beam(or stood on the footholder)

There's _one_ good thing to come out of that Magnet-Beam missplacement from MegaMan 1 though: After it, the developers started to give similar items for free (like the several Rush's forms at the end of Megaman 3's stages) and make their forced uses (if any) pretty much a Final Stage thing when you already have them all. Optional pick-ups just gave buffs or commodities more than necessities. Old school development teams were all about learning and having fun along with the players. Also: it seems time has had a negative effect on us; when young, I remember that every single "frustrating" occurrence during gameplay was more of a "challenge" to me. Curious that. Keep the videos coming, PikaSprey 😎🖒
