You can see Toby Fox's inspiration from this, with all of the secret "Fun" events, Gaster being a reference to Uboa, the red gummy stroking the rail looks sort of like the amalgam in the True Lab that tucks Frisk into the bed, and a small child with a knife with the potential to massacre every creature in the game but also no reason to

There's an entire wiki for Yume Nikki fangames, and there's hundreds of rpg maker ones alone. You're probably not looking for any more recommendations, but .flow is really good, on par with the original for me. It's a bit more gruesome and less subtle about the implications made about the main character's internal struggles, but also more conclusive than Yume Nikki was with its ending. (And I like the new intro, it's not loud anymore)

@@cashnelson2306 In regards to RPG Maker games, Yume Nikki is the most influential one because it shows that you can do other things than a RPG with the engine. So I guess "one of the most influential games ever" may be a bit much, but in regards to RPG Maker games, it set the bar very high. This is what I meant by very influential: while not everyone may consider RPG Maker games as "real" games (especially if they are free), there are so many of them they are basically a genre. All thanks to Yume Nikki.

Kind of but better, LSD is too randomized and cryptic about what you're supposed to do to make progress in it. It also doesn't give you any items or collectibles to play with, all you do is walk around looking for new things you haven't seen yet in hopes that the progress chart will update with one more square filled. While Yume Nikki has great many of locations for you to explore LSD only has a couple dozen areas that get remixed in many unpredictable ways as the game days pass. It's certainly unique and immersive though, even if Yume Nikki does many of the same things better it's just so cool to see all these weird dreams from the first person perspective.

Honestly, on my first play through (blind; was curious why it was tagged as a cult classic on Steam) it did not really take me too long to find all the effects and get to the ending. I would say less than twelve hours without any help from the Wiki. I, to this day, still have less than twenty hours on it after really visiting all the deeper areas. To find everything on one’s own…that might take some time. Some of the locations are so abstract (like the tunnel in White Desert A) that I cannot see someone discovering it without help.

great review! Yume Nikki was amazing; I had no idea that it was remade! I'd've been totally happy to pay for a short Yume Nikki experience... if it was a good one. short isn't necessarily bad, just as long isn't necessarily good. but it sounds like Yume Nikki: Dream Diary is riddled with bugs and predictable, linear puzzle-solving. Yume Nikki's strength was its exploration; from how you (Pikasprey) described it, it sounds like they tried to add "game play" to appeal to a wider audience, but didn't do a great job, and lost a lot of the exploration along the way. (and gained some bad bugs! ugh!)

It's pretty interesting to see how OMORI took inspiration from this. [SPOILERS AHEAD] The whole hikkokomori theme, the jumping off a building as an ending, the random events, the exploring one's surreal dreams to discover the truth in reality, everything is surprisingly similar. So many areas in the dream world are surprisingly similar to areas in BLACK SPACE and the fan-named BLACKER SPACE. Even the sketches in the dream diary are shockingly similar to the journal in WHITE SPACE!

First off, I wanna say thank you so much for this. Seeing your first impressions of both games is really nice, and I like your comparisons to modern art. While obviously doing a video on each of them is asking for a lot, might I at least suggest playing some of the "spin-off" games that Yume Nikki has spawned? Yume 2kki is, I believe, one of the largest ones out there, and its OST is comparable, if not even more pleasant to listen to than the original. It also has one of the most levels of polish due to it being alive for so long, and a collaborative effort by a lot of people from 2ch, and it's even still apparently receiving updates with new content. Going down the rabbit hole of exploration games really has been some of the most interesting points of my time with video games, gotta say.

Thanks for making this pikasprey. You would definitely get more views doing only pokemon videos, but I’m glad you still spice things up with these hidden gems every once in a while. But for real tho, your pokemon videos are starting to dwarf the rest of them in views.

It was mentioned in a famitsu interview that the remake Yume Nikki Dream Diary was developed in only 9 months, including the planning stage before starting the actual work, it was about one year. Also the main development staff had 7-8 people. Idk, but i think that might explain why the game feels a little.. clunky and unpolished here and there, due to the short time and small team :0

Hey! Yume Nikki veteran here and I must say this was an awesome video. I love that Yume Nikki still is receiving attention, even when it was released 15 years ago. Well, I'll use this opportunity to say, if you like Yume Nikki, you could also try some of its most famous fangames. Warning! Recommendations ahead: tl;dr: Try Yume 2kki if you want more content (Like events, maps and effect uses), collectables and variety. Try .flow if you want more creepy things and story. Check the Yume Nikki fangames wiki for info about more fangames, because there are a lot of them! -Yume 2kki: Yume 2kki is a fanmade sequel to Yume Nikki where you play as Urotsuki, a young girl that sleeps a lot. Unless Yume Nikki, which is practically a finished product (Even if it's just the 0.10 version), Yume 2kki has been in constant development for 12 years. It has more content than the original, having around 1000 different maps, more collectables (35 effects, 232 wallpapers, 56 kura puzzles, 19 unlockable menu themes and a lot of music) and many differences that really makes this a different experience compared to Yume Nikki. Also, this game is more like a museum, because it was developed by a lot of different authors, so you can find a lot of different ideas and art styles. If you want to play this game, I highly recommend to check its wiki. It's really complete and the community works really hard to keep it updated (Which is difficult because sometimes the game gets updated *too* frequently that we can't keep track of the changes). If you want to check more about the game, you could also visit my channel. I have a full walkthrough of the game, so you can see some of the things it has to offer. Oh, the game also has like 7 different endings. The first three ending are for collecting all the effects, while the others are unlocked by collecting all the wallpapers, kura puzzles and music. There are also like 2 other endings that are unlocked by exploration, so yeah, there's a lot to do and, as it is still in development, there will always be more to do. In general, this game is more happier and cheerful...but it still has a lot of scary things if you search well enough (Zalgo still haunts me to this day). EDIT: Something important that I missed is that, in the original Yume Nikki, the effects don't really have a lot of uses. In this game , I think almost all the effects can be used somehow and somewhere. Maybe for unlocking a wallpaper, getting to a new area, seeing an event of just to make a NPC react. So there's that. Yes, I really like Yume 2kki. -.flow: I think this could be the most well known Yume Nikki fangame out there. It was released in 2009 and it received a new update pretty recetly after 5 years! In this game, you play as Sabitsuki, another girl who sleeps a lot and doesn't want to leave her room. In general, the thing I like the most about this fangame is the atmosphere and themes, because it is much darker and creepier than the original Yume Nikki. Also, this fangame has a story. It's really clear that everything in this game is connected somehow. This fangame also has three different ending, but every ending complement the other, showing more details about what is happening. There are much more fangames out there, like Dream on Dream (Which is one of my favorite fangames out there, because after finishing it I realized that the game was trying to tell me a story and everything was actually connected) or Dream Graffiti (Awesome music, events, maps and atmosphere) and I can't list all of them. I highly recommend you to check the Yume Nikki fangames wiki for more details about all the fangames that exist out there.

I only found your comment by sorting by newest comments, and I just want to thank you for this. I'd always wanted to try out some of the fan-made Yume Nikki content but never really looked into where to begin. I _hope_ that other people get to see this comment, because it's extremely well-put together. Thank you for this.

Yess Yume Nikki. I’m so happy you covered this :,DD thank you. Perhaps you should check out Witch’s Heart (not Witch’s House, I know that was done already) or Ib. I don’t think either are as clever as the other games in the series but they have their own charm. I’m not sure if they’re this series’ cup of tea, however.

You should remember that this game was created when the Internet started getting popular in Japan, so it makes sense that many effects are hard to find. Meaning, people will interact through on forums, and develop many theories around the ending.

The 3d remake feels like a game that people really tried to make good, but the devs have never worked on a 3d game and don't know how to re-create what Yume Nikki did in a 3d setting. That warehouse thing to me, feels like a moment were the devs go 'okay, this isn't working, what are other games and mediums doing that is working?' and tried to implement what they researched into there game in an attempt to make it better, without realising the fact that what they were doing may not be the best for there game.

Something to note (if it wasn't already mentioned) is the update to the game added a few extra areas, like the block area. Also, the Uboa event pre-patch was actually just a frame of a very hard to see face into a forced wake up, the patch added Uboa's area. The game also has a nice reference to Ao Oni in the form of a small area and a playable mini version for Madotsuki's Famicom. ALSO ALSO I think the game tried to be a sequel(?) of sorts because the start of the game references the original games ending, while also adding character reactions to different events (encountering Kyu-Kyu-kun comes to mind.) In closing, the game was underwhelming but it was nice to see that at least to some extent, the dev's of the game cared about what they were working on.

Great video! It kinda reminds me of LSD Dream Emulator, i feel like these games have a very special mysterious atmosphere to them that cant really be recreated today, maybe thats because the remake didnt work out. Or maybe its because in the 90s i was a kid and everything seemed more mysterious to me. Anyways, i love your videos keep up the great work!

The fact that Dream Diary starsts with Madotsuki seeing a puddle of blood and something falling in there makes me think that dream diary it's a continuation of the original tume nikki, like after the ending of the first one you clear the deepest part of the dream, progressing to a more surface level of your consciousness, the ending that has Madotsuki leaving his room is like she clearing her mind and progressing with her life, maybe after getting through a trauma she had.
