The point you made about including all the effect text on the actual cards instead of a tutorial is really good, but it goes further than that. Destiny Board Traveler is one of the few games to include anime cards from the original series. Cards like Backup Gardna, Penguin Torpedo, and Valon’s Armor cards have never been printed and of these only Penguin Torpedo has appeared in any other video game. So this means the developers hand picked some obscure anime cards (with effect text that actually differs from their anime effects) not included in any generic monster card database to feature and still opted not to include any form of tutorial. Nice!

The lack of ways to unlock characters and the text from effect monsters seem like development leftovers. Like you said, the game looks more like a demo, they probably had a lot more that they planned to add to the game, but scrapped midway through development due to the lack of budget. Once they realized they wouldn't be finishing the game the way they wanted, they probably rushed the game to completion, which explains the design flaws, they knew it was bad, but didn't bother to fix it.

Maybe they were gonna release the character unlock codes later but didn't bother because no one liked the game? I dunno, that's the only explanation I can think of.

Literally dice roll: the game. If you could actually setup your own deck (with some sort of restrictions or trade-off so you can't just use all of the best monsters), and the character powers weren't super random it could be a lot better, even with winning still relying on a dice roll.
@Veylon5 жыл бұрын
@@FakeHeroFang The old Star Wars card game did this. Each card had a "destiny number" in the top right corner. When the game needed randomness, you would draw a card from a deck and use that number. Part of the strategy of deck building and play was appreciating what numbers were good or bad for your strategy and manipulating the decks to have the best chances of drawing them when need be.

When you don't even know what the odds are or why then there's not really any strategy to be taken.

There's another issue with having the cheat codes be the only way of unlocking characters. More specifically, if you have the Yu-Gi-Oh! Double Pack 2. Every time you are on the title screen of either game and press B, it goes back to the game selection screen. The issue is, every cheat code requires at least 1 B press. So it's not possible to unlock any of the characters in Yu-Gi-Oh! Destiny Board Traveler on the Yu-Gi-Oh! Double Pack 2. Also, I have the official Prima Guide for the game and those cheat codes are nowhere to be found in the guide. Honestly, how did people even find out about these codes?

Just out of curiosity, but when you entered in those codes in the Double Pack 2, did you try holding down one of the other buttons in the cheat before inputting the rest? I've owned and also heard of other games that, when released in a larger "mega pack", they alter the included games a touch so the games with cheat codes that require button presses that would result in returning to the main game selection screen would "lock" the game from being selected out of if a specific button is held during the cheat input.

Side note, never play Reshef of destruction unless you're a masochist. It's very similar in mechanics and visuals to Sacred Cards, but more difficult and grindy from what I've heard/remember. They're both from that weird era where the card games didn't have set rules, so you have things happening like kuriboh killing blue eyes because element alignment advantage destroys the monster regardless of stats. Instead of just having a 40 card quota, each card also has a cost and you cannot overshoot your deck cost limit, so you have to use weak cards and slowly raise the limit as you win duels. From what I can recall, Reshef gives you much less currency to buy new cards and it takes longer to raise your deck cost. Love yourself and play Sacred Cards instead, or go full meme and play forbidden memories if you want the ancient yugioh experience. Lesson of the day? Relying on RNG for everything can suck the fun out of a game. Also, cheat codes as the only means to unlock characters? What the heck?
@CarmsCelestia5 жыл бұрын
Konami had a weird obsession with it. A longish bit of trivia: In Reshef of Destruction, "The Winged Dragon of Ra (Phoenix)" is locked behind a cheat code too, which you have to enter in Grandpas shops Card validater (?, a machine you could enter the card number on the bottom left of cards with in order to make those cards appear in the shop). If you did that while having "The Winged Dragon of Ra" (not sphere mode) you could travel back to Egypt and Marik would unlock Phoenix mode, the most broken card in game. (All god cards are immune to all effects except field boni and Sword of revealing lights. All played cards would always be face down until they attack, end a turn in attack mode or use their effect, which was either passive, or active. Active effects will end your turn and can only be activated if your card is face down.) Ra Sphere mode: 0/0, no effect. Obelisk: 4000/4000: Active: Destroy all non-god-cards on the enemy field and deal 4000 damage to the enemy LP Slifer: 4000/4000: Passive: Increase your strength by 3 levels for every card in your hand. (Hand limit was hardcapped at 5, one strength level = 500 Attack and def, for Slifer 5 cards in hand meant 1500x5 -> 11500 Attack + Field Bonus if played on Mountain (30% of base attack, -> 1200 -> 12700 attack) Ra : 4000/4000: Active: Reduce your LP to 1 and deal the same damage to your enemy Ra (Phoenix): 4000/4000 : Active: Pay 1000 Life points to destroy all enemy Monsters, ignoring their protections (Includes other god cards). PASSIVE: If this card is in your graveyard, summon "The Winged Dragon of Ra" to the Field. Now, why is this broken? Well, you can discard cards from your hand whenever you want. You draw phoenix, discard him and get Machine Ra for free, a 4000/4000 beater that cannot be stopped by anything but Swords of revealing lights. Easily the win condition against the lategame bosses (who use the normal 3 god cards and have up to 60000 Life points, while also playing 3 of every limited card) And Falsebound Kingdom, using the Konami Code will give you money. Every time. (You need to do it fast though). Literally no reason to learn resource management. Just press it anytime and you can build and buy anything

About the Super Powers: they're indeed completely random, but the chance for each character differs. For instance, Joey's simple re-roll ability has a high chance to trigger, while Yugi's broken Change of Heart ability triggers very rarely.

The one thing I remember about this game is that my friend unlocked a character by entering a code on the screen on his regular game. I had the 2 pack with Dungeon Dice Monsters but when I pressed B I think, I went back to the screen deciding between the two. 😞

Seeing it again after so many years, I've kinda got the same feeling. I'm really tempted to re-create a "spiritual successor" of the game, fixing up a lot of the questionable design choices, and adding things like spells, a proper story mode, maybe even deck customization. Not sure if there'd be much interest, though.

@@blarg2429 Monopoly was designed to be tedious. That was the point. House rules, like the "Free Parking" spot makes games take hours longer than they were even intended to take though lmfao. I played Monopoly for the first time in 5 years around Christmas, and a person would have been knocked out in 30 minutes had that rule not been applied. Hell, technically our game didn't end, I just counted the money I had and said "I have thousands of dollars more than anybody else, do we really want to sit here for another 30-60 minutes while this schlock-fest continues". There's *A TON* of strategy to win Monopoly that almost nobody that plays the game ever considers, and that's why people dislike it, and also why games take so damned long. Every time I play, some schmuck thinks that they'll be able to win with no Monopoly's to speak of and no strategy beyond hoping for good rolls. If you don't form Monopoly's, your an idiot. If you don't trade, you're an idiot. If you don't consider strategy every 5ish turns, you're an idiot. You don't have to be a genius to be good or have fun, but you at least have to go in with a plan and adjust. Games of Monopoly *CAN* be fun, you just need to be the right person and to not play as if you were grinding in an RPG.

The intended way of knowing the codes was probably those cheat code books sold at school book fairs, and/or official strategy guides. Gotta drum up demand to make kids spend extra money somehow! That's probably why you can't play as Tami Yugi without a code, as well - they wanted kids to think they had to spend money to learn how to play as who they most likely wanted to be.

Looking over this, I feel like I could take what was available and fix many of the issues. Aside from obvious balancing of effects, adding functionality, making some features optional and such; I can tackle a couple of these issues here. The Duel Die would not have effects that can so blatantly screw over a player. The sides would be "Sword and Shield", "Fairy Meteor Crush", "Reinforcements", "Castle Walls", and 2 "Miss" sides. These cards would apply the effects of the Spell/Trap cards they're named after for the player who rolled them. This alone would mostly fix the issue of tribute summoning a monster for no effect. In the example you gave, that 1/6 chance for Sword and Shield could effectively becomes a "Miss". For the Playing die, I'd make a faceless side the ability to activate a monster effect. While you'd be giving up your movement for the turn, it would give the player a chance to use the listed effects of monsters that would normally need to be activated by declaration, like Time Wizard. Even though a number of cards won't benefit from this, it will at least open up some card diversity. Lastly, continuous effects like Star Boy would be applied so long as they're on the board. Because, you know, why shouldn't they? It would even make the listing of Type/Attribute much more reasonable to include. Obviously, there's a lot of work needed to make the game far more functional. But the groundwork is there to make it a playable game with a standard Yu-gi-oh Deck and a Die.

I was no professional at YuGiOh! but I actually knew most of the basics and most of the way the game functions. However, dumb child me got this game thinking it would just be another digitalized version of the card game. About 2 minutes in, I realized this was not the case. I powered through and little, dumb me jumped into it and after about an hour, I hated it. I could not figure out why some actions did some things. I remember back then, hating it because I did not know the rules or how things worked in it. Now I know why. There was no clear tutorial! Maybe I was not so stupid when I was kid after all...

As soon as you mentioned that this was a GBA game, I understood the problem with the multiplayer. XD Also, I happen to own all the spinoffs you named as "weird" (besides this one) and like one other.
