I remember writing to Nintendo Power's Counselor's Corner because I couldn't beat the Boobeam Trap. They sent me a 3 page packet through the mail detailing how to beat the boss. I'll never forget that.

it's because of the limitations of the NES system. Megaman did not conpensate for this well, unlike SMB 1 to SMB 3, resulting in glitchy graphics.

This game is what solidified Mega Man as one of my all-time favorite childhood series. Hell, this soundtrack (along with MM3 and MMX) will always be burned into my memory. For the record: I owned and beat the first one (and I think I bought the first one at some street market my grandmother took me to; memory's a bit fuzzy on that), but I couldn't appreciate it like I did this one.

Not being a big fan of the original Mega Man when I rented it back in elementary school, it was a huge shock to see how incredible this looked when it graced it's very own issue of Nintendo Power and I awaited its arrival at my local rental store with bated breath. Then, one day, it appeared! There it was on the new release wall, rented out of course, and I knew one day soon it'd be savoring it. But, boy did it take a while! Every week we'd go looking for a movie/game to rent for the weekend and it was always out for what seemed like months. In fact, I remember being in the back seat of the family station wagon and praying to God that this time, when we showed up at the store, I'd see that little plastic tag hanging from the hook underneath its box, and one day there it was. Man, I was obsessed with this game; I had to memorize all the music! It was such an enormous improvement over the ho-hum original and really made the NES feel powerful. I remember this was the game that made me realize how much more satisfying "home" games could be even when they couldn't hope to match the graphics of those in the arcades. What an incredible classic!

Unlike the other games, in which only one order is the best, this one has MANY good boss orders for you to take. One I like to take involves getting items 2 and 1 and bombs before arriving at Heat Man's stage.

every game has multiple good orders, mainly all for weapons. like in 7, you might do junk man first to get junk shield asap, or in 11, you’ll do impact man first so you can get pile driver. i could probably name an instance like this for every game but you probably already get the idea

I remember my childhood order to be a lot different from NC's video. I'd fight Bubbleman first, then Airman and, if my memory doesn't fail me, Heatman for last one. I like to use Metalman's weapon to defeat Woodman and Heatman's weapon against the dragon, altough the video's order seems a lot more logic. Other games seem a lot more rigid about the enemy order, but I'm no MM professional.

I prefer to end with the Robot Master whose weapon is the most effective against the first Wily boss. Playing this game I’d go strictly by weakness order (Metal>Bubble>Heat>Wood>Air>Crash), then branch off and do Flash Man (it’s better to do his stage with the Crash Bomber handy, plus he’s vulnerable to it), then Quick Man before the Mech Dragon, who I’d waste with the Quick Boomerang.

Ah yea, Mega Man 2, the game that introduced a lot of the series' staples going forward. The regular boss, or Robot Master, group is up to eight instead of six, Energy Tanks, the ability to save progress via a password system, and special items that can be acquired by beating certain stages. This game pretty much cemented Mega Man as one of Capcom's most beloved franchises, and it significantly surpassed MM1 in every conceivable way. It is a must have a title, especially for those who want to get into the series for the first time ever.

MM3 was the first game I played in the series, so it's always been my favorite. But it's hard to deny how great of a game this is. The energy tanks and password system make it much more accessible than the original, and the graphics and music are both incredible for their time. A true classic.

@SR707 Yeah, I played through the series again after seeing these videos, and it struck me that the higher energy tank limits in 3-6 take most of the challenge out of them. 2 is definitely more challenging, and one of my favorites, but I still like 3 better.

The game that set the standard formula for most if not all subsequent Mega Man games to follow. Boy did this game, make an impact, and for good reason. Brilliant levels and bosses, some of the most useful weapons in the series, and a _legendary_ soundtrack. I have the strangest relationship with Mega Man 2. Of course, I always loved it, but as to my opinion of how much I think it stacks up against later games in the series has fluctuated wildly throughout my life. Few will deny that it improves upon its predecessor in just about every way, but for a long time, I liked the other NES Mega Mans slightly more. In more recent times, I've come to appreciate 2's strong points more, as my understanding of game design developed. Is it the best game in the franchise? ...I think maybe the X series has the advantage in many ways, but Mega Man 2 may just be my favorite NES game. Wherever you place MM2, it's iconic, and an absolute must-play classic.

The best game ever in the NES hexology, IMO. Over the decades, there have been dozens and dozens of remixes of the soundtrack. It would really make my day, if someone could recrate this soundtrack to make it sound like the "Willow" Arcade soundtrack, which was also composed by Takashi Tateishi.

I remember when I got this game it was June 1990 or 91. our TV was out for repairs so I couldn't play it for a week. last day of school I get off the bus and lo and behold there was a brand new TV in the living room so I could finally play it! I couldn't believe how clear the picture was on that new TV! I spent that hot summer parked in front of the TV with a giant box fan blowing on me, then i'd take breaks and go outside and play. that was a great summer.

@@NintendoComplete Exactly! I know you like Mega Man 3 more, but what I always felt was that no weapon in that game was as good as the Metal Blade. I actually never owned Mega Man 2 growing up (I rented it all the time) but I did own MM3 and I always felt that was a weakness of that game (no standout weapon). On the other hand, that made the game more challenging, which can be viewed as a positive.

The shadow blade was pretty similar in concept, wasn't it? But yeah, MM3's weapons weren't as versatile as MM2's and the Top Spin sucked ass. The magnet was pretty good as a homing weapon though.

@@NintendoComplete If my memory serves me well, the Shadow Blade was really lousy compared to the Metal Blade. I believe it controlled poorly, didn’t go as far and ran out super fast. Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t have fond memories of that weapon. The Metal Blade was so responsive and easy to control, plus it went the whole length of the screen. Yes the magnet was a good weapon for sure. I remember the weapons in MM3 depleting much faster and weapon refills being much rarer/enemies dropping much less power-ups than in MM2. I guess that made MM3 much harder. Maybe I’m wrong though, it’s been a long time since I played it. Thanks for the play through and I’m looking forward to more Mega Man games!

To be honest, this video is the first time I see someone overcoming the Willy's Castle stage 4 boss in one turn. Never been able to do that, didn't even think about such a strategy. As much as I respect the franchise, Megaman never was my cup of tea but I remember beating 1 and 2 back in the day. Never liked the puzzle-ish platform philosophy not to mention boss rushes. There's no deny though, it's one of the most memorable NES soundtracks.

I know this comment may seem irrelevant but I compare Mega Man with Bruce Lee. In the beginning before Mega Man beat any master robots he only has the Mega Buster. Just like Bruce Lee in the beginning he only knew Wing Chun from his master IP Man. However, later on Mega Man becomes more and more powerful with each master robots he defeats to have the ultimate skill and power to defeat Dr. Wily. Same with Bruce Lee. He knew in order to be a true master in martial arts he would have to learn all different styles. That's why he has masters of all types of fighting teach him karate, Jiu- Jitsu, boxing, Muay Thai, etc. Only then when he incorporates all that he knows and adapts to the opponents method of fighting does he become truly powerful with his martial art Jeet Kung Do.

I love these games, but I do wish the later ones had kept the gameplay as snappy as the first two. The addition of the charge beam seemed cool when it first came out, but it also slowed combat down as it made your primary weapon much weaker as normal enemies now required more button mashing to defeat. Pre charge beam combat was so fast and satisfying as most enemies needed only one shot to kill

The first game I saved up and bought with my own money. Nintendo Power convinced me I had to have this one. My mom and dad had a policy of me having to rent a game before I bought it, to make sure I liked it, so even when I had the money saved up, they wanted me to rent it first.. For a while, I couldn't find it at the rental store. When I finally did, it was as glorious as I imagined it would be. My dad must have noticed, because the next day, he offered to return the game to the rental store early, and take me to Kay-Bee Toys to buy it. I got to pick up where I left off, thanks to passwords. That weekend, my best friend had a sleepover at my house, and we stayed up until we beat it. I remember we thought the ending suggested that Mega Man had died, due to the somber music, and the way he just kind of vanishes, leaving his helmet behind.

I had always interpreted the ending of this game to indicate that Mega Man's fight against the forces of evil (i.e., Dr. Wily) will never end, and he must fight through rain, shine, sleet, and/or snow to preserve to peace.

[6:00] - The metal man weapon is OP. It's strong and can be fired in 8 directions. And sometimes one shot kills mutiple enemies. At least they should have made it such that each shot drains one of little energy bars.

Most people have no clue how overrated this weapon is. Many times Leave Shield, Air Shooter and Quick Boomerang deal more damage or even faster. I guess most people never developed a signature play style.

While many crow this is their favorite, mine is #4, two castles, great music, the charge shot (blah blah it makes boss weapons useless, blah blah, can't hear ya). Plus there's no boss that if you run out of weapon energy, forces you to game over just to have it refilled, a flaw if you ask me, even if that is what the developers intended.

Difficult yes, but not as much as the first! Iceman flying platforms and Elecman’s electric blasts were so frustrating! Not to mention those jumping robots that take away so much power from you…
