Mega Man 3: Protoman's Rebirth! (Part One) A Gaming Manga Adaptation

A brief explanation about this book! The Rockman manga series began in Japan in 1992, published by Kodansha and written by Shigeto Ikehara. The books covered both the GameBoy and Family Computer series of games. While they were distinct and separate, the series began with Rockman 4 in 1992. Only after that were the first 3 games given a manga treatment. So the books were not written in order, nor when all of the games were new. The book covering the first game was very close to the story of the game, as was the second, though some liberties were taken. By this point all of the 8-bit games had a manga retelling, except for 3. In July 1994, the book Yomigaeru Blues was published in Japan. The story was compiled from weekly strips the were published months before. The book tries to create a new and different story that would be more interesting than just following the script of the game, which by then was 4 years old. The book was written with the audience having knowledge of the complete series of games, as well as books that came after the setting of Rockman 3. As a result, some things in the book are left very ambiguous. There is no origin story for Rush, nor is Mega Man told that he and Proto Man were both built by Dr. Light. Dr. Cossack knew Dr. Light before the events of Mega Man 4 and are friends or at least colleagues. Some of Dr. Cossack's robots appear in the story, which makes sense because these are the robots he used when he turned evil in the next game. So if you read this book at the end of the series, it works almost like a "gaiden," though it shares many elements of Mega Man 3 and does feature each of the robot masters, even if some of them are just in the background. Long story short, there is no book called "Rockman 3" but this is as close as you'll get. I took some liberties with the presentation. The book has 5 chapters, though for the purposes of having a balanced video, I turned it into 6 chapters, by putting the submarine battle into its own chapter, which was originally part of chapter 2. The start and end of other chapters are shifted, as the start each boss battle ends a chapter, while the battle finishes at the start of the next one. I removed some anachronisms that would place the story beyond the third game, which made sense for those who read the books in order, but would not make sense if you had not read them, and followed the story of the games. Other things, like Eddie, were left in because they were too essential to the plot, but who's to say he wasn’t created before Rockman 4 and just wasn't used??

Thanks for the background info! I caught that Eddie was here and was like "wasn't his first appearance in 4?" so makes a lot more sense given the publication history. From the ages of like 5 to 8 Megaman was my life so awesome to get this sort of look at the stuff Japan was putting out at the time.

Eddie makes an appearance in part 2 that’s too vital to the story leave out but one thing I learned in all my screenwriter and production classes and from work experience is that what we see on camera is only a fraction of what’s happening offstage that we don’t see.

Mega Man 3 was always my personal favourite in the mainline series, so seeing this manga adaptation is like an early Christmas gift for me :3 I dunno if anyone agrees, but the design of young Dr. Wily reminds me of a fusion between Heihachi Mishima and J. Jonah Jameson lol. I know, as usual, I'm a little late for watching this video, but GTV's iconic programming is worth the wait!! Top notch stuff, as always~!! ^w^

This is "Blues' Resurrection". It's a story that happen between "5" and "6". It's a original story. The "3" adaptation only appear in "Rockman 4" manga first chapter.

Thanks! 30k is a big number and I am grateful for it but I still operate with the mindset I had starting out with 0 subs and 0 vids. And back when I started I swore I would be the big channel (if I ever was “big”) that would reply to everyone and so far every (coherent) comment has a reply! I’ve spoken to everyone who has ever left a comment! Sometimes you might see one unreplied but that means the person left 2-3 comments on one day and I replied to the longest one. When did the manga release? If before X5, then the ideal of separation and identity goes further than originally believed. Damn, and here I was impressed that Wily found a way to organically clone robots for the military (or so it is hinted in Gemini man stage). Looking forward to the next video. Love this channel.

The weekly strips started in February 94 with the finished book coming in July 94. So x5 was still a ways off. I left. Detailed comment explaining everything but this book allows for a part 3 after the rest of the first 6 were written

Great vídeo, the first game i own of megaman series, i trade a rambo game for it, never knew how play it. The first robot Master i challenged was hard man, the boiler. This manga it's a mix up the megaman 3 and megaman Willy wars. Saludos camarada and never trusted on doctores Willy and robotnik.
