Let's think about that: Reploids are advanced robots with free will, emotions, and human-level intelligence. They're essentially mechanical humans, for all intents and purposes, including moral dilemmas. And Zero just gleefully butchered an entire squad of them for shits and literal giggles. How is it a stretch that he could and would do the same to the classic robots? Now, of course this isn't the Zero we know and love at the helm when he does this. He clearly has some kind of control chip or the Wily virus making him act this way, and after Sigma shatters his gem (and unwittingly infects himself with the Wily virus), Zero is taken in for study and rehabilitation and is ultimately reformed into the Zero we all know and love. Our zero would never hurt the original cast. ... But while he's batshit insane and ripping everything apart that he can get his hands on? Oh, yes. I think it's pretty clear that he would if given a chance.

So Capcom already explained what happened, Humans feared another war and with Dr. Wily on his death bed the UN or whatever made a band on all Robot Masters, this includes Mega Man, Roll, Bass, ect. Dr. Light created X with freewill amd ran moral testing on him to make him a pacifist to show that the world didn't have to fear, but something went wrong and X was asleep for 100 years and so Light made armour upgrades and special fighting mechanisms for X, fearing a violent future that he could not predict, but he didn't want a future where X would fight at all

So here's a theory: What if the creator was right? What if Zero DIDN'T kill Megaman...doens't mean he didn't hurt him. Or try. Keeping your semi-issolated metropolis idea intact, Picture this: Zero DOES go trash Light's lab, messes shit up, and after your childhood dreambattle, Megaman manage to put him down. Light sees the threat, but can't help but see the masterwork Wily put together; he can't destroy it, so he puts him into stasis, running a program to clear the "brainwashing" Wily left. Problem being, the world saw the damage that the fight left. Maybe the fight even took to the streets, ravaging the city. They see what Light, People like him, and their creations can do...and they're scared. They riot, tearing away at labs, burning manuals, trying to erase EVERY INSTANCE of Light's work, or anything that could lead to recreating it. And, they go for Light, and they hurt him bad. They stop teaching about robotics and programming in schools, and as generations pass, the heroics of "Rockman" stop being anything more that stories, and the entire culture has faded to being very simplistic. Simple doesn't do well when other countries are looking to conquer. The entire area that knew what tech we were capable of making was leveled by bombing runs when the civilians refused to cooperate. The only tech that survived was X, buried in the rubble of his father's workshop, completed and told his purpose with Light's final breaths. Why else would Light be so afraid to put one of his creations into the world? He'd had no fear in shoving the AI's of the original Megaman games out as soon as he'd accomplished it, but he had X go through AGES of diagnostics, and even then (if i recall) left a note saying not to wake X up if the world wasnt' going to be ready for him. Light new he'd messed up...but he also knew that X was his chance at redemption. He just needed the world to be ready first. NOTICE ME DOOKIE-SEMPAI!

THOUGHT! Better yet, what if Zero isn't the one causing the damage that freaks everyone out? WHAT IF It's ROCK. Think: they talk (at the very least in the comics, and i'm fairly certain in the game lore) about how after each adventure, Megaman purges his upgrades, because each one makes him more feral and aggressive. What if as he's desperatly powering himself up, he doesn't realize how fast he's losing it, and how much stronger he's getting. Pretty soon, Zero isn't fighting, and taunting; he's running, just trying to survive as Megaman decimates the area. A few more powerups in, he's not even targeting anymore; he just wants to destroy. Zero is able to slip away in the chaos and crawls back into his pod for repairs and combat intel upgrades based on that fight, while Dr. Light himself is forced to hit a switch he'd hidden for years; Rock and Roll's Emergency Shut Downs. Sure, he'd probably had them on every robot he made, but Wily removed the rest, and he is forced to shut megaman down himself-to kill his own son. One more reason for him to be so hesitant about X; he couldn't bear to watch another of his children face this kind of hate, or this ability to destroy. That could also explain why X keeps some powers after a game (dash augmentation, for example)--Light saw what this instability could do, and tried to patch it, at least partially....UUUUUGH. If you'll excuse me, i have a fanfiction i need to go write now.

It could be even simpler: One of these Mega Man vs. Wily (and Robot Masters or probably Zero,...?) fights caused so massive destruction and death all over the world, that humanity started to stop all engagement in robot development, and tried to wipe out all memories about Dr. Light, Mega Man and Wily to avoid such happenings for all times. So, Light had to seal X away and had to go to exile. But that doesn't say much about Mega Mans destiny - probably, most other robots were destroyed, but he stayed together with his "father" till he got broken some day.

Actually, we know what happened to most of them: -The Mega Man Gameboy series explains that Dr. Wily went forward in time and captured the Mega Man of the future and transformed him into Quint, who is defeated by Mega Man, hence that is Mega Man's death. -Protoman died due to his faulty core which he never let Dr. Light repair and throughout the entire classic series was basically just a ticking time bomb. -Otto can be seen frozen in an ice block in Blizzard Buffalo's stage in the PSX/Saturn ports of X3. -Wily's robot masters were all destroyed by Mega Man and Wily (also explained in the GB series). -The rest of the characters (Roll, Rush, etc.) we can assume were buried with Dr. Light's lab and didn't survive.

Quint escaped after his defeat. But at least one thing can be sure with Mega Man's fate according Quint's story: He was already transferred back into a house keeping robot after all those Wily Warfares. With Light's death, Mega Man is likely to be shut down, and even if he could be still active in X era, there's no way he would be capable of battle at all.

My unstable core could blow us both up!" implying that it was never fixed. Dr. Wily probably just gave him his shield and buster as far as the "being fixed" part goes.

Doesnt Dr Cosack from Megaman 4 proves you wrong on the "Issolated technopolis" theory? He was a russian robotic engineer who made/used the 8robots master and he was associated with a russian group of technology. So outside of the main city, there was already another part who knew about robotic humanoids.

Girouettex if I may play devil's advocate for a moment. Dr. Cosack was working under duress due to Wiley. Its possible that the rest of the world was working on robotics, but nowhere near on the level of the alleged mega city. Wiley could have provided Cosack with the equipment to make weapons on his level but keep his name out of it. Similar circumstances could be applied to the world warrior robots in 6 - isolated people from outside the city making leaps of their own but not in an organized, focused center for it; Like what Battlebots would be to OCP. So we could be looking at the technology not being 100% isolated to the city, but being done on a far smaller scale or in secret elsewhere in the world. Likewise, when whatever disaster befell the mega city, its possible that all the other areas working on robots, after seeing the devastation, abandoned and/or destroyed their work, ending forward progress in robotics. Heck there could have even been international laws put in place banning robotics work to prevent another disaster until a century later when Cain unearthed X and people, as they want to do, didn't learn from the tragedies of their past. As far as Cain knowing about the famous Dr. Light, its entirely possible Light's name is well known in the future, but the specifics of his research has been lost, buried, or destroyed so people know WHAT he did and how important it was, but lack the specific technology and information to replicate it.

My theory: Mega Man has a set expiration date from MM9. Either he's been scrapped or he's hiding somewhere in the year 21XX. Dr. Wily has been given robot a bad name. Humanity was too imature to look past it, so Dr. Light had seal X away for 100 years. Either way, he's no longer needed because X is there to carry out world peace.

I was thinking the same man. Something as advanced as a robot who thinks for itself is a huuuuge piece of technology that must be shared. So I was thinking,could it be that,as all the destruction Willy was creating was devouring the world,all the people in the planet refused that technology and the human race was in front of a dark age-kind of thing. Information can be lost in few decades if people just reject it. Take the religion vs science big struggle in middle ages. You're completely ignoring the key factor that divides classic MegaMan robots from Reploids - consciousness. The robots of the Dr. Light era did not have actual consciousness or emotions. All of their actions came from pre-programmed behavior. Sometime during a peaceful era, after the defeat (or more likely disappearance) of Dr. Wily, Dr. Light began working on an actual consciousness computer system. He equipped MegaMan with the prototype. Dr. Light was smart enough to understand that with consciousness, there was also the possibility of a robot 'choosing' evil. To prevent this, he sealed MegaMan with the prototype system in the diagnostic chamber. The chamber did not only measure MegaMan's emotional responses, but also subtly reprogrammed the consciousness system to help prevent 'evil' robots from ever arising. When Dr. Cain found MegaMan in the chamber, he aborted the diagnostic system before it was finished. This is why MegaMan goes through several ethical conundrums throughout the X series - he is trying to figure out what is 'right' and what is 'wrong'. The Reploids that Dr. Cain based on the MegaMan's design never went through the diagnostic system, nor were they even based on the final product. This is why so many of them choose to become 'evil' - hence, Mavericks. What Dr. Cain meant about X being 'a quantum leap' was that he was capable of actual conscious emotion - something no other robot in that era could do.

Yes, MegaMan and MegaMan X are the same robot. That much is made perfectly clear by the first MegaMan X instruction manual.

Except it's been said on-record that they are not the same robot. So that theory's a no-go. Thing is, We actually DO know what happened to Mega Man and you don't need a crazy theory jumping through hoops to prove it. To put it simply, Mega Man killed himself in Mega Man V for the Gameboy (the GB series is canon, btw), specifically, he killed Quint, who was a future Mega Man that was reprogrammed by Wily and sent back to kill him. Mega Man just flat-out disappeared from the timeline altogether. So there you have it.

Half right and half wrong. According to game and comic series Mega man X, replies did exist, not with a free will like X, he was claimed to be the first but he's actually the second. Yes all future reploids are designed off of X. The maverick virus that was inside Zero made the mavericks, X4 cutscene in Zero's storyline. I believe the reploids was createdto be immune the robot influenza in Megaman 10 but the maverick virus. Just like in Mega man Zero the reploids was redesigned to be immune to the Sigma/Zero virus.

Still, it's still a mistery why Dr.light would name him "MegaMan" X when he already had a robot child named MegaMan. Maybe he believed X to be a spiritual succesor to his son? Who knows

In Megaman 6 the manual claims that the 6 robots from the game are from around the world, so Mega City could not have been the only advanced civilization that had robots hence why the 6 robot masters come from all over the world not all from Mega City.

The second theory makes no sense. In mega man 6. Robot masters from all over the world come together and fight in a tournament and in 8 There's clearly a globe that shows where the robot masters are. So that theory of no one noticing about super technology outside that city makes no sense logically and canonically. Either the cataclysm theory happened where mega man is killed or is severally damaged but is still salvageable and is converted into x. There

Dr. Light seems to have had a few labs throughout the series. Sometimes it is in the countryside, sometimes either in or near a big city. You can even see a map of the world in MM8 which shows exactly where the lab is located, which interestingly enough is in the middle of the US, which I assume is near the original Monsteropolis/Mega City. Many of the Classic games span the world or beyond, and are not contained only within the city known as Mega City / Monsteropolis. For instance, the aforementioned map from MM8 spans the entire globe. Also, MM3 appears to be referencing that the stages take place on various mining colonies on different planets. And MM6 mentions a world wide robot tournament, with various creations from all over the world being taken over by Mr. X, implying there are many robot scientists by that time capable of making advanced robots. MM4 is also heavily implied to be taking place (at least in part) in either Russia or some sort of New Soviet Union inspired nation where Dr. Cossack comes from, but this point is just implied theory. Point is... by the end of the games from the classic series, the entire world seems to be completely transformed by advanced robotics technology on the same level as Monsteropolis / Mega City. My theory.... At some point, in the implied eventual conclusion to the classic MM series that begins and ends in 20XX, is that Dr. Wily and Mega Man's conflict with each other ends up driving Wily to make Zero, and the Zero virus, and the virus infects the world either by accident or by intent before Zero even wakes up, causing widespread panic, robots all over go haywire and fight each other, humanity is sent into a panic and hides for a while, Mega Man does his best to fight them off but eventually is overwhelmed and is finally defeated... all historical databases have been corrupted by this virus. When Humanity finally emerges, they find all robots have destroyed each other, as well as most of the cities. Dr. Light, having hid in a bunker beneath his lab for that period of time, continued work on a new fighting robot, one that would have a stronger force of will that could not be dominated by this virus, deeper emotions that emulate human emotions and empathy perfectly. However, not convinced he was safe (having just survived a robot apocalypse) he locked him away for diagnostic testing to determine when he was at that expectation level and ready. He died before humanity began emerging from hiding. When humans began picking up the pieces, with nothing left but rubble and non-functioning servers, with only records of the past written down, they eventually forgot about the age or robots over the next few generations. The older generation felt they were too dangerous, while the younger generation didn't even think much of them, simply content rebuilding and moving on and making a new life of their own without robots. Dr. Wily, having unleashed the virus, probably would have regretted what happened, and with no human population to dominate with his robots, and with the defeat of Mega Man robbed from him, would have never unleashed Zero himself, and lived the rest of his life in regret. Perhaps he uploaded his consciousness somewhere that is copied onto various robots every once in a while somehow (Dr. Weil, Serges, Issoc, etc.), it remains a mystery. Dr. Light's lab was destroyed on the surface during the chaos, but the bunker beneath where Dr. Light worked would have been largely untouched until Dr. Cain came along and happened upon it, ushering in the new age of robots, now known as reploids. I feel this is the only thing that fits with everything we know about the MM lore, give or take some retconning and creative licensing that is bound to happen as the series continues with its revival coming up. Maybe if they revisit the X series, they may finally answer some of these questions and clear this time gap up.

Allow me to make some belated changes to your otherwise well-written headcanon. After the events of Megaman 11, Wily would redirect his focus to more long term goals. He focused on further developing his Robobenza Virus. From his infection in Megaman 10, Wily looked for ways to make for it to house his consciousness after his mortal body dies. He makes a breakthrough to allow the virus to house his willpower in a very rudimentary form. This would render the cure he had previously given in Megaman 10 completely useless, as Roboenza is no longer a simple illness, but a mind control technique. He tests this out by unleashing a virus outbreak and backs up a copy to a WIP Zero. So this would set the events for Megaman 12. Naturally, Wily eventually loses and manages to escape, but every robot on the planet was affected by this war. Due to Dr. Light being unable to develop a cure for this highly advanced virus and left with no alternative, the world government orders all robot research and production to be halted for 50 years, and for all current robots to be retired/destroyed. Sadly, this included Megaman and Roll (I’ll treat the GameBoy Megaman games as non-canon for this theory), who were both infected and losing control of their actions. After a grieving Dr. Light buries his beloved son and daughter, he retreats to his underground bunker of a lab and begins working on Megaman X, a robot who would never succumb to any virus and carry on Light’s hopes and dreams. Meanwhile, Wily would also retreat to a secret bunker to evade the manhunt humanity has once again put out on him. Frustrated that the government was willing to cull the entirety of the world’s robot population to eradicate his virus, Wily sets his virus project aside to focus on finishing Zero. This wasn’t how it was supposed to end. He was supposed to be the greatest engineer, the genius that was undoubtedly superior to Light, but instead, Megaman was now gone, and not by his own hand. Wily had little time left in this world, and he knew it. He had to finish Zero. This would be his greatest creation: one that would finally best the late Megaman in battle, physical proof that he had finally surpassed Light. Wily would use his virus as a means to empower Zero with his will to destroy, to fight, but died before Zero could be completed. Wily may not have completed the virus, but his will lives on in it. Through future infections when Zero was ultimately found and released upon the world, the will of Wily would allow Reploid engineers (i.e. Serges) to be infected by the virus and finish what Wily himself couldn’t. For the rest of humanity, they would recover quickly. No one was in the mood to renew the ban on robot production when the 50 year ban was up. Human casualties during the Wily Wars were minimal, but property damage was immense. Robots were needed to assist with more rebuilding. Light and Wily were both long gone, and their legacies largely faded from the memory of the general public. Thus, humanity was pretty excited with Dr. Cain introduced Megaman X to the world, believing that Reploids would be humanity’s key to finally and truly become a space-faring civilization.

I think the answer to the question is the existence of Bassnium, which is what powered Bass. Bass was the prototype unit that led directly into the development of Zero. When Dr. Light found out Wily was making Zero, he started development of X, likely using the same materials.

I have my own theory that's kind of a spin on the cataclysm theory. Dr. Wiley creates Zero, the first robot truly superior to Mega Man, and orders him to destroy all of Dr. Light's robots which he does. Mega Man confronts him, is defeated, but escapes with his life. Dr. Light constructs him a new superior body based on Zero's design, and transfers Rock's consciousness into it. He confronts Zero again and wins this time. However, during the battle, Rock's brain is damaged, and he looses all of his memories and his morality resets to unaligned like when he was first constructed. Dr. Light seals him in the morality conditioning pod and dies while Rock (who we now know as X) is still inside. Dr. Wiley seals Zero in a pod along with the Maverick virus, which reverses a robots morality, and transfers his own consciousness into a robot body. 100 years pass and the events of the X series take place. Just my personal theory. What do you think?

I'm sorry Dookieshed but this theory is incorrect right off the bat. In Mega Man 6 there is the first annual robot masters tournament where robotics engineers from around the world showed off their abilities of creation. Each master was specifically made to represent the country or area that they were originating from, which explains the culture diversity of the levels and robots. This shoots everything you had about there only being one city/area that this series takes place in because it is clearly shown that this technology is shared throughout the world.

Even if the events in Megaman were located in 1 city, I doubt a city (or the landscape/nature) is capable of supporting such a diverse climate. I mean you can't have tropical islands, sea, volcanoes, desert and forever winter lands in the same place. Not in a small area... The Mega City must be really really huge to support all that and to think that with our current technology, I don't think we can miss a city or country as big as that.

Dan Hutchinson Yes it is but with the current technology it is impossible that no trace of past great technology left and we're only talking about 100 years here which is roughly 1 to 2 generations. As I said in my last post, to build such a large and futuristic city, you can't make it without relying on other country's help. So even if you somehow close all borders, Mega City's existence is well known to all people.

Me personally, I think that it got to a point where Wily’s shenanigans got so out of control that it forced every nation on earth finally to declare total war on Dr. Wily. And the war was so apocalyptic that it decimated the planet and set humanity back by hundreds, if not thousands, of years. In that time, Megaman and Bass kill each other in battle, the classic cast is killed off and Wily creates the Maverick Virus, Zero, and he finds a way to outlive his body (weather through an AI or a brain transfer into a robot body that he hid away, I dunno). But he died before he could put either Zero or the virus into action. Horrified by the carnage and overcome with grief, Dr. Light used what time he had left to build X, and the rest is history. That’s my head cannon anyway.

My idea is that Wily realizes he has no chance of winning against Megaman, so he decides to take out as much as he can, blowing up facilities and killing roboticists until only Light is left, he then blows Mega City to smithereens, injuring Mega Man, killing Proto Man, and only leaving Bass intact. Bass proceeds to rescue Mega Man and take him to safety before he dies. Then, alone and the last of his kind, Bass sets out to find answers and come to grips with the fact that he'll never fulfill his goal of defeating Mega Man. I'd like to imagine that he somehow manages to survive until the X series and confronts X or Zero at some point to finally give himself closure.

Your theory has a couple of flaws: Cain was impressed with the "Conscious" system that Light created in X (hence the lockdown, Light was afraid that X wasn't ready and something could go wrong with his capability of freedom). Cain copied that system and created the Reploids, since Cain didn't understood how the system works, Mavericks were born (Reploids that go bad and since they aren't locked by the laws of robotics, they do as they wish), not to confuse with Wily´s robot, they are programmed to do what Wily says, hence the lack of obedience with the laws. X and Zero have the capacity to learn and evolve (kinda like humans), thats why they are ahead of the curve (cheap way to keep them OP), quality that the common reploid lacks (Vile kinda explains it on psp X game, and that advantage goes away in X8 with the new Reploids), since Cain couldn't replicate exactly those 2 (using the cliche Light and Wily were geniuses and "none" could compare to them). Zero its found inside a Wily Castle, which might tell you 2 things: He awoke and murdered Wily and its robots, then shut down or like X, he was locked down and then, awaken by Wily´s hologram and the Reploids he murder are Sigma´s unit. This takes me to another flaw: What about Dr.Cossack? He lived in Siberia and he was a genius scientist too, plus the rockman 6 robo masters were created by scientists around the world. So the idea that the technology to evolve was only in "Mega City" is kinda farfetched.

I had always assumed that Dr. Light, much like Dr. Wily, had a second lab kept separate. There's also the fact that the games don't happen solely in a single location; they happen on a global scale. Dr. Cossack was from Russia, after all. There's also things like the Robot Tournament, the island in Mega Man 8, and the fact that there's also heavy use of space throughout the games. In general, the theory of Mega City being buried doesn't make sense because it creates this little contained place where everything happened when that's not the case. There is an entire world and they DO have nearly as advanced technology. The thing about X, though, is that Dr. Light wasn't just a genius; he was BEYOND a genius! He was able to build a robot that was hundreds of years ahead of its time, something that technology even 100+ years later couldn't replicate, even when factoring in the exponential growth. This is because Mega Man was basically his prototype. While Proto Man was the prototype for the robots Wily and Light would make, which was just the beginning for Light, Mega Man was a prototype for something far more; true artificial intelligence, exactly the same as X. By the time Light would build X, he had learned so much from Mega Man that going way further was so easy for him. I think Inafune is full of shit when it comes to the "No cataclysm" thing. At least, not in the way we thought it was. The cataclysm theory suggests that Zero killed everyone, right? But what if the only thing he killed... was Wily and his bots? What if one of the last acts of Wily's life was to seal Zero again and transfer his consciousness into a computer? We already know that Proto Man would eventually die, and if we cover Wily's bots that only leaves Light's bots; with Wily gone, Light probably began to work on his X project in a secret lab. With Mega Man not needing to fight, and as the prototype for X's AI, he might've been built into X. Roll probably was around until Light died and eventually shut down because of being unable to perform maintenance on herself, which would also be what all the other bots minus Auto suffered from. As for Auto, we know he lives somewhere unseen (Thanks MMX3 boss cutscenes) and he's generally skilled enough that he could maintain himself. Probably a dick move on his part to not maintain Roll and the others.

+hythrain There was also one little thing as well that hadn't been touched upon in either theory but was hinted at having existed prior to the 'Cataclysm'. The Maverick Virus. Back when the Rockman Zero Collection was released, a timeline was put up that told of events that had occured. One such talking about Light giving X an insane anti-virus program because of a mysterious computer virus that was causing all infected robots to turn violent, sound familiar?(Unfortunately Capcom took the timeline down, but it exists in other places) We also know that the virus itself had somehow been stored within Zero's capsule. This means the virus itself existed prior to the Cataclysm. It's wholly possible that this 'mystery' virus started to wreak havoc on the world. Robots that were once friends and allies, turning on their makers. Sure, Mega Man and the others would put up a fight, but I doubt they'd be able to stop that many as the virus slowly spreads out, turning more and more robots rogue. Hell, it's even possible that even the Blue Bomber himself became infected. With X being sealed away, the only hope humanity had was gone. Of course, we weren't totally helpless, we still had last resort weapons and used them. This would have leveled the cities themselves and if that were the case, 100 years to bury it all wouldn't be too far of a stretch if they never bothered to rebuild. The result? With no idea on the source of the virus, no way to fight back, humanity stops making robots. It becomes taboo. The information on how to make them is lost and forgotten, but the stories of Dr Light and his creations lives on. After all, they were heroes once and it's hard to erase that kind of legacy.

+Dragunslayer83 I actually never knew of that timeline, primarily because I've just never cared about the Zero series (I blame my own prejudices against Zero in the X series when I felt like he was being a show-stealer and taking all the good story development from X (Of course, we got this development later when MHX came out) That said, I'm looking it up now and... I know precisely what that virus is (I suggest playing MM8's Opening Stage music while reading this, since that's what I'm listening to while writing. I'm a nerd, yea). That virus is, in essence, the Evil Energy from MM8. Yea, Evil Energy isn't EXACTLY a virus, but it certainly behaves like one and it DOES come from space. It's known to spread rather uncontrollably. We also know that Wily had developed a robot flu virus in MM10. While he later made vaccines for the robot flu virus, the fact remains that Wily has been learning a lot about making viruses. With that knowledge, he likely created a new virus, the Zero Virus, and embedded it into Zero. This could also be what made Zero unwilling to listen to Wily, forcing Wily to seal Zero away. However, this idea of an anti-virus is broken. Why? Because if X had this super powerful anti-virus that was intended to work against Evil Energy and any virus based on Evil Energy, X should theoretically be able to absorb these viruses without any harm to himself. However, in MMX5 we find that doesn't happen: X takes constant damage from them. Sure, they're not infecting him, but they're still hurting him. It's also worth noting that timeline is flawed in the way it describes the creation of X and Zero. It implies that X was made first and Zero second, but we've never seen ANYTHING suggestion Light is making X in the original games. We have, however, seen proof that Wily is making Zero. As for putting it all together, if the virus IS the Evil Energy from MM8, one could assume that when the timeline talks about the virus from space, it means the events of MM8. Until such a time that this is proven incorrect, that's all we can assume it is. There's also the possibility that it referenced the robot flu virus, since Mega Man 10 released in the same year as the Rockman Zero Collection, and in terms of story it was mostly unknown who had made it until towards the end. If it was based on Evil Energy, you could still call it a virus from space since its original design was from space.

Even still though, Zero or X, whoever came first is a moot point in this regards. What is important though is the fact that the Maverick Virus existed prior to Zero being sealed away. It's entirely possible that Wily released the virus or something similar to it, whether intentionally or not, which was the catalyst for the cataclysm. That's mostly the point I'm trying to make.

And both of those could have been precursors to the one we see in the X series. We know that Wily was toying with viruses, so it could have been him working on and perfecting what would later become the maverick virus. Seeing how each virus would affect the world at large and how easily they could be stopped. When it failed, he makes a few tweaks, releases it, rinse and repeat until he makes one that can't be stopped. And since we have no idea what all occurred between the time of the original series and the X series, one of his viruses, maybe not the Maverick Virus, but a similar virus, was the cause of the Cataclysm. Also, there was a little hint as well that he may have been working on the Maverick Virus at the same time as Zero, though where it falls timeline wise and how canon it is, is debatable. But in the arcade game "Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters" in Bass' ending, Wily shows him the robot he's working on which looks like Zero and also hints around at another project.

i think inafune ( sorry if i spelled that wrong ) said that zero didnt kill the original mega man. zero was released at the reploid age and any reploid that came in contact with him was kill. so they had to send sigma the most skilled robot at the time to destroy zero

I think Zero *did* kill some Robot Masters, but only a few. He was uncontrollable in the cutscenes of his past that you see in X4, just a pure ball of fury and bloodlust. It stands to reason he was that uncontrollable from the start, and Zero might have even tried to kill Wily. He might have succeeded in killing Wily's body at least, taking a few loyal Robot Masters down in the process. After that, someone might have gained control of Zero just long enough to seal him back up again until somehow he freed himself from the capsule and started wreaking havoc in X's time.

Personally, I'm a fan of the theory that X is actually a remodeled Rock. Perhaps Megaman had finally achieved peace for the world, for the time being, and before he got too old and passed away, Dr. Light decided to remodel Rock so he could take care of the future. So while Wily had his own plans for the Future, Light being the smart guy he is, already had plans to save it from his creations. I mean, really, it would make sense that Light would want his original creation to live on in some form to be able to protect humans and robots alike.

Well Wily has such an involvement in the X series that I'm really impressed. Ok to begin Sigma had full knowledge of Wily as in the original MMX3 when you defeat Sigma he mentions that Zero is "The last of....Wi.....umbers"(Wily Numbers) also in MMX5 Sigma mentions that a professor has been helping him to create that body(Gamma Sigma) and its really interested in him. If you are Zero he says that he know him perfectly. As far as I know there is a theory that says that Serges is Wily because he was the only one that was capable of repairing Zero and fully upgrade him(making him exactly as the blueprints Wily showed) also when defeating by X he said "To believe I was defeated by the robotic dream of Light" those details in MMX3 and X5 really make me think those 2(Light and Wily) survived through some means as Light is able to repair X somehow(in the non-canon ending he also wipes his memories of Zero which I guess Light discovered who by that time he was and how dangerous he could be) anyway if those two preserved themselves then what happened to the others??

So I stumbled across a Game released in Japan called "Megaman & Bass: Challenger from the future" The main boss is Megaman Shadow who came from the future to fight Megaman and Bass. Long story short after you beat him he tells you that in the future he destroyed everything, nothing was able to stop him. So he came to the past to find someone who could stop him. It's really interesting and uh CANON as it's in game. How crazy is that???

That then became the dark elf. After the elf war, X becomes leader and later uses his body to seal dark elf. Which his spirit leaves becoming a cyber elf that we see in Megaman Zero.

I like to think Protoman had a part in armageddon. Dr. Light built him as the first combat prototype, but he was unstable and henceforth was never meant to see the light of day. Cept he became active and took off on his own. In one of the spinoff games, (Megaman Power Fighters or something) Light warns Protoman of how unstable his core is. That's why Protoman does the lone wolf thing. He wants to help in his own way, (and also test his strength against his brother on occasion) but he never really spends time with the other heroes. He doesn't want to endanger his friends should his core give out. Light offered to repair him, but Protoman was too damn proud and hated the idea of going back to the lab and being confined. He blew Light off. I think one day Protoman just goes nuclear and kills some of the main cast inadvertently.

what made X more advanced than any thing before is it had the ability of self determination, it was not restricted by the robot laws. The robot masters in the original series were always reprogrammed by Wily very few of them were his own design. X was in the 100 years diagnostic mode to allow a moral code to form on its own.

+Michael Allen There's a lot of ground in the theory that Serges from X2 and Dr. Isoc from X6 are, in fact, Wily. Although nothings ever been proven, Serges built Zero basically up from scratch and even mentions Dr. Light when X finishes him off. And Dr. Isoc in X6 basically stops Zero without any issues and flat out states he knows him 'inside and out'. No scientist in the series could ever decipher Zero due to the complexity of him, yet those two do it without any problem which a lot of people believe is due to Wily transferring his consciousness into the bodies. Of course, all always speculation but that actually makes the most sense to me.

He never outright says anything like that whatsoever. And it's not the 'WORST' but it's not the best either. They completely changed some things but most of the English dialogue actually works very well. And yep, they do call him Mega Man X a few times. I think they did that to make it seem like Mega Man and X are the same person (Which there's no official canon on that), but it was dropped right after that game. Now if you want a rusty translation, X6 probably has it overall the worst. They got the dialogue right but they didn't make the dialogue feel natural or readable.

+David Erickson This is factual truth from the Japanese version: All the Serges hints are subtle (And it should be Sagesse, as in French for "wisdom". It's a French theme naming, Violen is actually Engrish for the French word "violent" which has a silent T, and Agile is pronounced in the French way too. Inafune has a hardon for French naming schemes, just look at the Zero series) When Serges contacts Dr. Cain and X early in the game, the transmission starts garbled and he says "...Rock...X..." at the start - He knows X's full name is Rockman X which nobody else uses in the entire series (unlike the official translation where everyone calls him Megaman X) and the only one else who certainly knows it is Dr. Cain himself who read X's full specs when he unearthed him. Then, you beat Serges in the late game, and he says "Defeated by Light's robot memento again..." or something like that, instead of some BS about "the prophecy". Finally (this is minor though) Sigma actually says "Zero, why…he’s…the last of…Wi…num…ers…" when he's dying instead of just "the last of the Doctor's creations". He's referring to the Wily Numbers, meaning the DWN-### model numbers that all Robot Masters had. Zero is DWN-∞.

Besides, Inafune's opinion doesn't matter anymore, he's no longer responsible for the series... Capcom can basically do whatever they please with the characters.

I always thought that X was simply Megaman upgraded with an entire memory reset (and keep underground for some reason), or 95%ish reset, cause you know, he is the Shinji Ikari of reploids with lots of feels. I find this theory to make perfect sense since doctor Light is present in Megaman X, in the capsules where you upgrade your armor and x-buster.

They kinda subtly explain the 100 year gap. Close to his death bed Wily finishes Zero, the first robot who can think for himself who has a virus that can be used to infect other robots. Zero unleashed wrecks humans and robots alike with a lot of robots becoming Mavericks. X just seems like Dr. Light upgraded Mega Man. Bass and Protoman were probably killed, every one else most likely retreated. The world was in chaos due to Mavericks for several years until Cain found X. Then built reploids based off of his design. Unfortunately one of those reploids was Sigma who got infected by Zero as well. Which then brings us to the current Mega Man X storyline.

Big problem with the last theory, dookie. Mega Man 4 featured Dr Cossack's robots, he's a scientist from Russia and his robots had technology similar to Megaman. Even more so, Mega Man 6 featured robots from all over the world with similar technology to Megaman. I'm going to go out and say it. The cataclysm theory is true. In addition to it being a very good approach to the backstory, there is simply too much evidence supporting it. Either Keiji Inafune dismissed it because Capcom wanted the series to still have a small semblance of family friendliness, or he was being an asshole. Done.

Isn't Zero technically the oldest reploid since Wily has his schematics way before X was conceived, also I think there was Quint who was a future Megaman that gave up his weapons for a peaceful life before being brainwashed by Wily. I think in Tatsunoko vs Capcom there was a scene where Zero was wired up while Wily was working on upgrading him. Perhaps technology was abandoned for a while because mankind fear robots which might be why Light hid X away until robots and humans coexist.

Dookieshed I have two questions on your theory: 1. the fact that X was advanced may just have been his ability to make his own decisions. think about how if someone had designed AI in the 60's that would still be considered advanced even though from a hardware standpoint we are much further along. 2. How do you know that the lab where X was stored was Dr. Light's main lab? it would actually make more sense for him to store it in a secret lab to ensure that nobody found and opened the capsule before the diagnostics were complete-an event he predicted would not happen until after his death.

2:35 actually there’s something I wanted to point out about the theory to which I’m updating it to the Downfall Theory. The creator of Mega Man said that “Zero did not kill them.” but with what we saw in Zero’s awakening, it’s too canonical and probably too late for that to just be a red herring. So what if we rephrase his answer to this: “No, Zero did not kill them ALL.” Think about it, Zero was definitely awakened by Wily right after he was completed with the instructions to go destroy HIS nemesis, no specifics at all. Zero was a killing machine with the only intent to not kill Dr Light, but kill everything Dr Light has created and anyone who stood in his path towards that goal. Mega Man, Proto Man, Roll, Rush and the robot masters from Mega Man 1, 3 (since both Light and Wily created them) and 9 all fell into being Zero’s targets. Humans and robot master who look up or thanks Mega Man for all he had done (especially for the robot masters who were released from Wily or changed their ways thanks to Mega Man) so they tried to stop Zero but it was futile. Even Bass and Treble tried to stop Zero, mad that this was his replacement but ultimately died as well. Then Zero succeeded in killing some of Light’s creations but not Dr Light himself and roamed the area for the missing scientist. That’s why the creator said that Zero didn’t kill them, because Zero never got the chance to kill Light as he went into hiding. This is when another scientist steps in, Dr Mikhail Sergeyevich Cossack from MegaMan 4. He knows that even Mega Man couldn’t take down the monstrosity Wily created that is Zero and he knows that once Zero finds out of his connection with Light, he will find him and kill both him, Kalinka and all of the robot masters he created. There was no stopping Zero, he knew that so the only thing he could do was to bring his entire family into hiding, perhaps going into stasis but not after telling any remaining robot master alive to do so too. So the robot masters went into hiding and shut themselves down, waiting for anyone to come and reactivate them once the whole Zero thing blew over because if Zero knows where they are and their connections with Light, Zero would go after them, leaving a path of destruction in his wake. This was the utter breaking point: with many robot masters and 2 famous Scientists going into hiding and with a rampaging Zero on the loose, the world descended into utter chaos. All research and teachings on Robotics were destroyed (maybe even programming as well but it’s kinda unlikely) in fear that such a thing would happen again. Any robots that remain were brutally destroyed by scared humans who’re afraid that they might kill them. But there was a split with other humans who wanted to protect the robots but got killed as well. Many armies tried to stop Zero but to no avail. Lives were lost and blood and bolts were shed everywhere, that is until Megaman confronts Zero. Imagine the epic battle between him and Zero but the fight ended in a draw. Because of how Megaman is, he couldn’t bring himself to kill a fellow robot so he placed Zero back into his capsule. Knowing that the world no longer needs him, Mega Man turned back into who he really was, Rock and permanently shut down from all the damage Zero inflicted onto him. With that, Wily had won, he built a robot better than Light’s and defeated Megaman since Zero is still alive, and Mega Man was dead. Robot masters who went into hiding might’ve been discovered and destroyed by humans or get buried under all the debris Zero left behind. With one little push, everything came down like a chain of dominos. All of Dr Light’s creations and the robot masters that have failed him are now gone, the world rejected Light’s vision of a peaceful world where man and machine can coexist together and with him now existing as an a.i in the Maverick Virus or in Megaman 10 theory, the Robofluenza he kept spares of, it was Wily’s ultimate victory and thus this was the fall of all robotics, robots, and the legacy of Megaman. Little did Wily knew that Light was secretly making another robot, X. Light knew that X could go berserk like Zero and he knew that there’s not much time in his life to complete X’s testing so he placed X in his capsule to run tests there. He also knew that the world would exile X should he show him to the world and kept him in hiding, even leaving a note saying that no one should wake X up until the world was ready. This was Light’s last attempt at both redemption and to keep Robotics alive in hope that humans and robots can coexist together, even if he wouldn’t live to see that day happen. Then Dr Cain came and found X. He was beyond amazed by what Light has done since though technology has advanced tenfold, robotics was a lost subject. Seeing a robot was more than extraordinary in the day and age but since Dr Cain wasn’t a scientist, he halfheartedly created Reploids modelled after X. And believe it or not, Dr Light’s dream came true, Reploids are like robots and they coexist together with humans with no issue. Granted it’s not perfect with all the Mavericks and Wily’s virus spreading, I mean Cain’s no genius and due to how more advanced X was to the Reploids there’s still more work to be done but it’s good enough for Dr Light and Rock. So after Dr Cain supposedly retired from the Reploid business if he didn’t die after Megaman X4, he would be going around digging up places like he used to do and perhaps discover the other robot masters hidden away underground. If X was found, then why couldn’t the other robot masters be? Edit: The problem I have is with what the creator of MegaMan said about how it’s not in Zero’s profile to kill someone but considering Wily’s motivations and want of revenge, I’m guessing that it means that Zero’s the kind of guy who just wants to get the job done and kill off who he’s supposed to kill, he wouldn’t kill anyone else unless they stood in his way. He’s not a mindless killing machine, rather a tactical killing machine that thinks anyone who stand in his way is an enemy.

A recent discovery, is the Capcom approved Megaman animated series *DOES* explain what happened between the classic series and the X series. The short explanation is a temporal causality loop. It Involves Vile and Spark Mandril traveling back in time to acquire resources no longer available in their time period, but plentiful in the classic series time period, and teaming up with Wily. X follows and ends up teaming up with Classic Megaman, and basically explains the state of the future and his role as a Maverick Hunter to Dr. Light, and that Light is his creator. They're in possession of at least flight as advanced as current day SOTA craft, if not better. And their society must possess a capacity for industry we can only dream of if they're producing THAT MANY advanced, autonomous robots. 2) X's advancements were a "quantum leap", but not necessarily in every technological category. That is, 100 years of advancement could have occurred elsewhere without contradicting the timeline, as boring as that sounds. What we know about X, is that he is highly advanced in two big ways: His "Humanity", and his "Adaptability". i) X possesses the same potential for morality (conscience ) and emotion as that of a human being. The original Mega Man was a powerful adaptive fighting machine, but still ultimately a MACHINE. He was slaved to hardwired laws of robotics (or at least, those Dr. Light installed in him), as evidenced at the end of Mega Man 7. X however, was built to function as a fully sapient independent being with free will (See: the "Suffering Circuit") , and most reploids we encounter follow that formula, being derived from X. ii) X's ability to adapt and evolve as time goes on. While X's intelligence and personality tech was far in advance of Dr. Cain's era, that does not preclude the rest of the world technologically progressing in other ways; including in the use of robotics. Evidence? For starters, how about all those Mechaniloids? Y'know, the robotic creatures that comprise most of the minor enemies and mini-bosses in the series? Notice how they operate on "instinct", while Reploids (and only Reploids) operate on sapience? If the robotics were that advanced already, it'd make far more sense for the post Light/Wily society to continue developing and using robots (Mechaniloids) for heavy industry, police and military functions. As a side note, I'd like to point out that Dr. Light and Dr. Wily weren't the only people making advanced robots. (see: Mega Man IV, and Dr. Cassock) Finally, military tech from Dr. Cain's era couldn't have been terribly far from X's original configuration, since as early as X1, newer models of Reploids were outmoding X in combat!...at least, until his Adaptive systems kicked in. (that's actually a plot point in Maverick Hunter X)
