He is not a character who is searching for his past. As much as I love Zero, I think he gets his true stride in the Zero series. Don't get me wrong, he's great in X4 and X5, but beyond those games and how fun he is to play as, Zero doesn't really get anymore stand out moments, at least for me. Not to say Zero was bad after X5, but nothing as impactful as X4 and X5. Then the Zero series came... I love how Zero was portrayed in his own series. In a way, I would call Zero a deuteragonist because while he does all the fighting and ultimately stops Ragnarok from destroying the Earth in Zero 4, Ciel also plays a part in the story, mainly dealing with the energy crisis. She's the one saving the world, and Zero acts as her bodyguard, her muscle, her protector, etc. Zero in this series is also more cold in personality than he was in the X series, not saying much until Zero 3. His arc in Zero 3 was handled extremely well, and he even got to destroy his original body from the X series, symbolizing that Zero has moved beyond the days where he was a god of destruction, and now fights for humanity. This ultimately comes to a great payoff in Zero 4, where Zero sacrifices himself to stop Dr. Weil from destroying the Earth with Ragnarok, and in the greatest twist of irony, Zero, the last machine created by Dr. Wily, the antagonist of the Classic series, the one that was made to bring humanity to its knees, the god of destruction Sigma hyped him up to be in X5... is the one who ends up saving humanity from destruction. I don't know any other form of literature with irony as powerful as Zero's final moments, going out with one of the greatest self-sacrifices I have ever seen in any form of media. While I have bigger soft spots for Rock and Hub, Zero is easily the greatest hero of the Mega Man franchise, and arguably, the one who saved the world from the worst possible scenario. Zero's a true badass, and he deserves the praise he gets.

I totally get why you didn't include zero from he zero series here, since he wasn't exactly a "motivational tool" used to get you to git gud, but the story itself allows you to get all choked up with the nostalgia of the "good old days". The world has gone to shit, zero is basically in hibernation, and when he wakes up, X is gone. His only true friend in the world, gone. That shit made me go "Where's X? I wanna find him!" X and Zero are such good friends, and their bond is so emotionally charged that it pulls you into the game almost naturally. That's another good use of the concepts "Zero, the lovable character" and "X and Zero, bffs". Whaddaya think, dookie?

X is like Donnel from FE: Awakening. His potential is INSANE and in time he will be the biggest, most badass mofo around. Until then Zero aka Chrom/Robin just has to be there to support him. So is X stronger than Zero? Not initially, but in time no one will be able to stop X. That's why Sigma and Vile are so obsessed with him. And yeah the bond between X and Zero is one of the core/central theme of the X/Zero series because similar to Zero guiding X in X1-X3, X then supports/guide Zero in Z1-Z4. Honestly so many things right with the X/Zero/ZX series. Damn shame, it ended.

I.e.: Think of how in Mega Man Zero 1, the last boss was the actual X (not a copy), and Zero destroys him. That was only changed, and that too in the last minute, because it could cause controversy.

I always felt the relationship of X and Zero, in terms of story, gameplay, even lore and its theme, their names even. Its like a symbiosis relationship, one side could not be interesting without the other. Thus creating infinite possibility, hence without Zero, it would be another generic goal setting to get to the end like classic megaman games (there's your bad guy, go collect these power ups through these levels, horray, the end). Without X, there would be no sense of struggle, chemistry or feelings of attachment. They are attune to each other.

Zero is my favorite character in the Mega Man series. My first Mega Man game was Zero 4 and the ending motivated me to find out about this guy. He dies in the end and everyone was making a big deal about it. So I got the Zero collection DS game. And fell in love with the Mega Man series. It was cool finding about the history of the game series backwards, going "Oh who is this X guy, he seems super wise and is Zero's best friend." "Oh he's Mega Man???? Mind Blown" I then got into the Zx series because I wanted to know what happened to Zero after Zero 4. I loved those games too! I then got into classic Mega Man and then the X series. And I am currently deeply researching the lore of this entire series because I love it so much and it has a VERY great story. And that is why Mega Man is my favorite game series of all time. Oh yeah, I also got into it as the series died... So now I want to be there for it's epic return! I came in late and did my homework on the series.

Zero, as a motivational concept, basically accomplishes what rival characters do without being a rival. Yes, Classic Knuckles, Blue/Gary, and Vergil do a great job. There's a reason their respective games are considered the most memorable of their franchises (legit, my main goal when playing those games, was to catch up to them). And you could argue that they delivery better pay off since you as the player eventually get to stick it right back too them at the end. But with Zero, since he isn't really a rival (though clearly built to be one) he keeps coming back better and better. So the player is continuously reminded of how much cooler he is. Not really sure if they will ever get that pay off. It is a lot more subtle. And if the X series actually killed Zero off for good in X5, then everything would've come full circle. You and X would finally have surpassed him and defeated him (pretty easily honestly) and it'd be also very heartbreaking considering how much you owe to this guy. I'm honestly of the belief that if X5 really couldn't be the end of the X series, they should've just let Zero die in that game. And only come back in his own Megman Zero series. His function in the X games as the motivator and "rival" to the player character pretty much vanishes after X5 and it'd actually help the transition into the Zero games a lot better. Since in those games you play as a newly revived Zero after X went on plenty of adventures after defeating him. And you'd buy that because you PLAYED those adventures without Zero. It also would've forced the writers to give X some love but I digress.

Actually, MMX1-3 warm the player up to Zero showing them that with dedication they can become stronger and better than before. MMX4-8 let's you take that power on as Zero, and you can now test if you are good enough to wield his powers. Zero is geared to fit smarter players, as they have to get up close to use Zero's Z-Saber.

Years ago, i tried to tell my cousin how awesome Zero was and when we passed through game shop I showed him the cover art of X4. "That girl is the one you are talking about?" he asks. I adamantly declared that Zero was badass and not a girl. He points at the picture, "...but then why does he have long flowing hair and green boobs?" He's my favorite character ever, i was in tears watching this vid...but now i can never unsee it. Why does Zero have green boobs or giant green nipple cups?

Surprised you didn't mention Metal Gear Solid here: both Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 have a very similar way of motivating the character by showing them an incredibly badass character that, throughout the game, they get closer and closer to being as strong as.

Hell yeah. Kingdom Hearts 2 does this really well. In the moments that you are fighting Organization 13 (specifically starting with Xaldin), if you lose the fight, you get to play as King Mickey (who is much stronger than and has many more skills than your character). This is very much an incentive to show you how powerful you can be while progressing in the game. Additionally, the game starts you out as Roxas, a character with no skills, but you quickly escalate to having an absurd amount of power, and then regress as Sora, to a very normal amount of power. Another example pf experiencing the power that you can (and will) eventually obtain in the game.

Personality aside, to have chars like Zero and Vile also makes the game universe vast and alive. X is positioned to reflect the reasonable ego setting for the user. The user is constantly reminded off his or her place in this game world. One thing worth to mention is the impression of Zero in Zero games had been toned down to a rather humble state, not the war beast Zero he used to be. In many respect he was placed similar to the original Rock. However in contrast to his appearance, his dialog became mature, reflect he as a seasoned soul.

Sure, the setup in the X series was great and all, but the growth from "what am I fighting for" to "If I see an enemy in front of me, I'll destroy it" was pretty killer. I'd love a more in depth look at Zero that goes into his character through the whole franchise more.

Guess what, dookieshed? ZERO IS STILL FREAKING OP once you know how he worked. Why? This is even comparing to the broken ass Ultimate Armor X4: Better Plaforming skill, Dash Cancel combo despite having to defeat Magma Dragoon, Slash Beast as normal sabers, his overall technique worked well with platforming and destroying boss w/o even weakness. X5: Lost Dash cancel but extremely awesome Giga Attack, his Pizza Cutter was larger, his air Dash was invicible and his Black Armor was awesome (Legitimate unlock) X6: This is the game that ONLY ZERO can feel comfortable with because his buster now was fast and dealt extreme damage at closerange against non invincibility enemies, Dash cancel was back and stronger than ever, his shield was BROKEN simply with the multiplication glitch and he can even become invincible with a glitch as well.

Well like for me Zero have a strong influence on video games history, many features that are specific for him are still apearing in other game characters usually separated, but still, loose appeariance elements(long hair, scarfs, coats), combat style mixing melee and ranged weapons etc. of course not sure if there is any character that combined all the features so specific for him once more and made it as well as he did, but i'm not that much about gaming characters over all, anyways he's probably my favorite video game character of all time.

+LexFelipe12 I like both but the Zero fanboys make me want to vomit. And yeah X is stronger than Zero but I say both are actually pretty close in power. Zero has a ceiling but X will never stop getting stronger.

+LexFelipe12 I strongly prefer X over Zero, but it's pretty easy to see why people prefer Zero. The writers themselves pretty much overemphasized Zero until it finally balanced out in X8. I also feel that's why the Maverick Hunter X series was going to be created, because MHX brought far more importance to X than Zero, and it was going to go up to X6.

Silver The "Psychokinetic" Hedgehog X was the basis of Reploids, although you could say he's both a Replica of the original MM and the human race... which i guess it counts? But Zero... He was especifically made for the propouse of eliminating Megaman once and for all and he has less to Zero (Non pun-intended), recemblance to Dr. Wily's prior creations, so... no, he wouldn't be a reploid, but rather a Highly-Advanced Death Machine or "Robot Master" :D

It´s funny my love/respect/manlove?/like? for Zero began with Megaman X5, my mind was presented with the image of this bad-ass robot while that mysterious theme plays......Who is that?, Why should i care for?. Nonetheless i was engaged. The one that let me play the game suggested that i chose the blue/white robot. And from there began my experience with the megaman franchise. Zero got me intrigued when he sacrificed to protect me after the battle that took a lot of effort in my part to defeat. Then i obtained my first megaman game, a disc of the Megaman X 4 game. This time i decided to go with Zero, and since in X 5 i could change characters at any momment. If i found it difficult, i could always change or so i thought. I saw i couldn´t change so i said to myself "Oh, well. I´ll just wing it with Zero". There began my actual training in dominating Zero. Something hard for someone that begins with X, since Zero is close combat, and has low defense. But i found myself liking the idea of the damage output of Zero´s Blade. And well.....the rest if history xD.

I was like 5 years old when i first played Megaman X and i still remember how i struggled trying to defeat Vile and feeling like shit because i couldn't damage him but suddenly a long-haired dude appears and beat the crap out of Vile. And that guys, is the best scene i've seen in a game, everything about that scene is perfect. Zero is just a badass!

If anything i would say they are pretty much equal. Besides if Capcom wasn't so stupid they could give X something like they did with Megaman Zero series. And i mean, instead of choosing between 2 characters, like they did from MMX4 onwards, you would only play X. As well as give him his own interesting tale etc.
