Mega Man: The Power Battle (Arcade) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Capcom's 1995 arcade action game, Mega Man: The Power Battle.
This video shows me playing through each of the three courses:

I am playing the CPS1 version here. It also got a release on the more advanced CPS2 platform.
Mega Man: The Power Battle is one of the many spin-offs the blue bomber has starred in over the years, but unlike most, this one was designed specifically for arcades. Rather than entirely ditching the series' well-known set of mechanics, Capcom decided rather to adapt them to a new format that they were already intimately familiar with - the tournament-style versus fighter.
That's right, Mega Man gets thrown in the blender with Street Fighter II, and the result is something that was (somewhat unexpectedly) excellent through-and-through!
The game calls upon robot masters from Mega Man games of the past and gives them a complete 32-bit makeover with massive, hand-drawn sprites. They all still entirely recognizable (thanks largely to their unique designs and personalities), but anyone that loved this crowd on the NES is instantly going to fall in love all over again at just how much care was taken in updating the characters. The remixed music is also thoroughly excellent, taking good advantage of the CPS1 hardware's formidable FM capabilities.
The gameplay stays quite close to the original NES games, though. It's presented as a boss rush, and as you would expect, each win earns you the fallen enemy's weapon as a prize. Just like in the original games, each weapon won will be particularly strong against a different enemy, so it's a good idea to fight them in an order that exploits their weaknesses.
There are three major ladders to play through - the first is based on robot masters from Mega Man 1 and 2, the second from Mega Man 3 through 6, and the third from Mega Man 7. Furthermore, you get to choose playing as Mega Man, Protoman, or Bass. They do all play similarly to one another, but they do each have their own specific quirks that differentiate them enough to make them all worth trying out.
It did see accurate home conversions on the Mega Man Anniversary Collection (PS2/GC/Xbox) back in 2004, along with an absolutely stellar 8-bit style adaptation for the Neo Geo Pocket Color (named Rockman Battle & Fighters - you can find my translated playthrough of that one here: • Rockman Battle & Fight... ), but it seems to have otherwise been forgotten by Capcom.
I hope that they release again at some point. It's a fantastic homage to a classic series that deserves a shot at a new audience.

@@dennisanderson8663 Evidently it was a move by the American Amusement Machine Association, and was added to all machines that they imported into the US from 1989 to 2000. It was not only a PSA as part of the war on drugs, but also a clever way to help identify counterfeit machines due to it displaying the seal of the FBI (since the AAMA's president at the time had previously played a crucial role in the FBI busting a big counterfeiting ring).

Who'd have ever thought that Mega Man would've worked so well recreated in the mould of Street Fighter II? Or that Capcom would've invested so much care in updating each of the robot masters for the 32-bit era? It's a bit derivative, but this one is a total classic.

Correction: this version (CPS1) is confirmed to be coming out for the Capcom Home Arcade announced earlier this year, but it's the Capcom Home Arcade. There was also Rockman Power Battle Fighters on the PS2 which added a versus mode.

Never saw this one in an actual arcade before, but I did get to play this one (and the sequel) on the Mega Man Anniversary Collection. They're a lot of fun, and they look great! Instead of the 8-bit style, I would have loved for Mega Man 9 and/or 10 to look like this!

Unfortunately arcades blow in America. They've mostly died here. Even the ones I used to go to would never have current versions of games, i.e. Tekken 4 or 5 instead of 6. Games that don't fill up with quarters are replaced with cabinets that do. Certain niche games like NFL Blitz would almost always be found.

Thanks to MAME the home market can finally enjoy games that were never ported to consoles or just too difficult/expensive to own a standalone cabinet of. Due to arcades being almost non-existent where I grew up and the limited selection of games, 95% of the games in arcade I never would have discovered if not for MAME.

Some of the tracks from the second arcade game would wind up in Rockman Complete Works, and later on MMAC as the arranged tracks. Also, Crash Man has the wrong track for his stage in this game.

The _Mega Man Anniversary Collection_ compilation was actually released in 2004 (2005 for the Xbox version), not 2002. Anyways, yeah, this game should really be released again at some point. In his “Game Compilations Compilation” video, Scott the Woz lamented that both of the _Mega Man Legacy Collection_ compilations only focused on the ten mainline games and left out other games that would have fit in well with the others, examples being _Mega Man & Bass_, the Sega Saturn version of _Mega Man 8_ (though excluding that couldn’t really be helped, as the Saturn is notoriously tough to emulate), the Game Boy installments, the Game Gear installment, and _The Wily Wars_ (thank Hylia it’s included in the Sega Genesis Mini’s library of games). Let’s hope that Capcom makes a third _Legacy Collection_ that includes some (or, ideally, all) of those games as well both this one and its sequel (_The Power Fighters_).

Capcom actually did intend to make a compilation that included all five of the _Mega Man_ games for the Game Boy titled _Mega Man Mania_, even going so far as to officially announce it. It would have been released for the Game Boy Advance as a counterpart to _Mega Man Anniversary Collection_. Sadly, that ended up not happening, and people who preordered _Mega Man Mania_ were given refunds. Again, I hope that Capcom makes a third _Mega Man Legacy Collection_ that would include the Game Boy games and the Game Gear one. And a hypothetical fourth installment that would include _Mega Man & Bass_, _The Wily Wars_, and the fighting games (the arcade duology and _Rockman Battle & Fighters_). What do you think?

Oh wow, I remember beating this through emulator with it's sequel, The Power Fighters. I loved these two Megaman spinoff, or maybe I just suck at Megaman generally, but I love battling various bosses in this way. Maybe one day Capcom would consider make a Megaman The Power Final or... something like that.

I would've loved this game more if it weren't for the stage selection mechanic. Without the Robot Masters being shown it's harder to plan which order you tackle the stages. Not only that, but the appearance of the islands don't even make sense. For example on my first playthrough I selected the bottom one *that looks like a circuit board* expecting Elecman but got Gutsman instead. Due to some other factors that I'd rather not spend my time typing, I would prefer the Power Fighters over this game.
