My theory: Before the events of X5, Doctah Wahwee (as Isoc) created him as his latest DWN robot, improving on the things he did with Zero, taking some stuff from X and adding reploid improvements. That's why he is highly adaptive (using a buster AND a melee sword, plus learning new moves and using the Nightmare to boost his power), he is immune to the W Virus (and all its variants) and has a very independent and intelligent behavior (he isn't being random, he clearly wants to create havoc so the events of X5 and X6 happen). That's why he can't be catalogued as a Irregular / Maverick, he is acting out of free will, and he doesn't mind what side he is fighting on as long as he has fun.

he's presumably the favorite of an artist who worked on quite a lot of the X games, however, that artist stopped working on them after X6 and X2 GBC came out, so starting with X7, the artist was gone, and so was Dynamo. though, X7 is also a pseudo-reboot, so there's that.
