In today's video we're super-sizing the trashcan foundry into a giant garbage can kiln! The steps we cover for creating a meta metal foundry for mixing metals and melting glass aren’t completely easy, but we’ll help you avoid the mistakes, so you end up with an awesome backyard mega metal foundry.
This metal foundry project is also great for those wanting to know how to make other cool things: forging aluminum, melting aluminum, melting brass, glass melting, molten metal, homemade foundry experiment, charcoal foundry, DIY smelting furnace, metal furnace, homemade foundry, cool science projects and more! Let us know what cool foundry experiments you create!
If you’re looking to try something new or for an activity such as: DIY metal project, foundry projects, cool science experiments, fun weekend project, or just a fun project with the family, watch the video to learn more.

Former fire and EMS here - just a heads up, galvanized metal offgasses due to its zinc coating, if you can't find regular old steel, then use a few coats of high temperature paint. I went with a 2000 degree rated primer, 2 coats and a 2000 degree rated paint, 2 coats. I plan on adding maintenance coats as needed from wear and what not. Another thing I did was go on amazon and get a $16 welders hood with flip up eye shield. Hasn't seen any flying concrete with molten metal yet, but I'll be glad I have this if that ever happens.

That kaowool will release for fibers overtime you really need to cover it in an inch or so of refractory cement or silica based cement look up a few videos on how to make a propane forge and how to replace the Kaowool in a propane forge Plus if you have the refractory cement it'll make it be a lot hotter

You should add 3 flame inlets because if you use 2 it will only get just as hot as the smaller ones...plus it’s bigger and the heat has to be absorbed by more wool...maybe you could use 2 propane tanks and 4 inlets for even more fire...if you want to play with ceramics. 👍

KaoWool feels like a squishy foam fiberglass, its a bit expensive but extremely easy to find on ebay and any major hardware store. You can poke a hole through it with your finger, and it falls apart if it gets wet. KaoWool can withstand about 20 minutes of 3,000 degree F fire, but it starts to cook and turn brittle and crumble. So no it can not hold an active thermite fire. Thermite is extremely easy to make, it's a powder consisting of metals.

The kaolwool doesn't reflect the heat; it absorbs it. You are still losing a lot of heat, since it is all getting trapped in the kaolwool. This hurts the kaowool and over time will cause it to be even less efficient and less insulative (and a little dangerous). You really should put a refractory layer in. Castable refractory is easy to make, and would probably be easy to add to the current setup. You could even simply line it with refractory brick (the thick heavy fire brick, not the insulative fire brick). That would be a very easy fix and could raise your efficiency dramatically. If you do it well it could probably get so hot that it could even melt iron or steel!

Gentlemen, please use a rigidizer or some castable refractory to coat the Kaowool. The air moved by the burners will carry small fibers airborne. Those fibers are very harmful if inhaled. Fumed silica works as a rigidizer and can be found for cheap.

I'm really not opposed to making and improvised foundry there are several problems from a health perspective that need to be addressed. Firstly as someone below said kaowool fibres are carcinogenic and should be sealed with another refractory material or coating to prevent fibres being breathed in when the foundry is running. Secondly the bolts, washers and trash can used pose another health risk as they appear to galvanized (I could be mistaken) any galvanized steel will release zinc oxide when heated this is harmful to the body. Please coat the wool and clarify what metal was used as anyone who copies this could be harmed by the end product if not

Perhaps soaking the kaowool in sodium silicate or a diluted refractory cement would work as a sufficient sealant? Would also add rigidity to the wool. I'm wondering if there is a less heat conductive material that could be used to help hold the wool instead of steel bolts. My concern there is burning yourself on the heads of the bolts that have one end exposed to such high heat.

KAO-WOOL. High-temperature insulation wool (HTIW), also known as kaowool (a portmanteau of the words kaolin and wool), known as ceramic fiber wool until the 1990s, is one of several types of synthetic mineral wool, generally defined as those resistant to temperatures above 1000°C.

That is a big open cavity you need to heat. Having such a large cavity in the foundry will really be a challenge for those little burners to heat up, and you will find that it takes way longer to get up to temperature compared to the smaller foundry. Also, when you put larger items in there to heat up, they will absorb a lot of the heat which means it will require a LOT more heat to keep temperature up in there while in use. I would have double lined the Kao Wool to take up some of that space, and would definitely double up the burners, with two more burners placed above the existing burners about halfway up the trash can. Would actually make for a cool video; remaking the gas burners two high with a bracket holding one above the other. Two sets of those, one on either side and you'll be set. Also, place a hard fire brick on the bottom to lift the crucible up so that it is receiving heat from underneath. Will make a difference in the heating efficiency.

I know you probably aren't that concerned with the efficiency or how hot the outside gets but you really should break your bond so on the wool add another layer with the seam in a different location and if you are concerned with losing your internal diameter you could go with thinner wool. You should also break your bonds where your walls meet the floor for example layer of wool on the floor then one layer to the walls then the second to the floor then the second to the walls the point being there isn't a straight break in insulation leading to the shell. Would also recommend useing stainless fastener. Anyway just 2 cents from someone who does it for a living(industrial level) so if you need material or anything hit me up.

If the long machining screws are left in you could turn the foundry on its side, and with some of that sheeting in the bottom you could use it as a shelf for a more stable placement for ceramics. Realign the propane holes and you could turn the foundry into a blacksmithing forge.

I say put 4 or 6 evenly spaced torches. Each set with it's own propane tank, so that it can run just as long with the increased fuel usage. Bet it would get hot in a couple minutes if you used 6, only problem is that might hurt the insulation properties if you cut that many holes.

Um... It would make the bubble expand. If the wrap is weak enough it will expand to the point where it breaks, but i doubt it will. Once the vacuum is released the wrap will have softer "bubbles" due to the expanded state previously.
