I've watched so many of the videos.......and this little girl probably affected me the most. Maybe it was her eyes that looked so teary and afraid. Almost see in them ..'Wheres my mum?' Yes, poor Diego. He wasn't happy about the usurper, but Spinifex was Miss Super Cool over it all and ignored him. If it doesn't work out between them I'll bring her back and find a juvie buddy - a wild grey as her buddy. Then I'll drive her north. But I'm going away next week or is it the week after, and again at the end of the month so I can't care for him as he needs.

So glad she’s doing well. Good thing there aren’t wild “grape trees” because there would be bat riots! To me, the black flying foxes are the cutest, the reds are the most elegant, and the grey-headeds the most impressive. And then there are the tube-noses, spectacled…. Wonderful animals, all of them. Thank you, the caring MOPs, and all the flying fox fairy godmothers and -fathers for helping them survive.
@Megabattie2 жыл бұрын
There are grape vines and if there's no food, they descend on vineyards... There are riots in other fruit trees and over the best figs in the native fig trees. But their favourite is when the eucalyptus blossoms and they can bury their noses in the rich nectar and pollen - they fight for the blossom in those trees all night.
@catherinehubbard11672 жыл бұрын
@@Megabattie : after so long co-evolving, the eucalyptus know how to throw an appealing feast for their pollinators. It’s wonderful. I wonder what pollinates the many eucalyptus trees in California, where there are no flying foxes. I don’t know if you already have heard the story of California eucalyptus, but what I was told was that some enterprising fellow brought them in from Australia in the 19th century to use for making railroad ties. He thought they would make his fortune and planted a lot of them, reasoning that with their drought and pest resistance, tough wood and fast growth, they’d make his fortune as the railroads spread. It’s probably myth, but the punch line to the tale is that when the first eucalyptus tree was going to be ceremoniously felled, it broke the axe and so ended the experiment. Whatever really happened, there are a LOT of eucalyptus trees in California now, mostly in the drier southern part of the state.

Hi Kaye; they have adorably foxy little faces. I think the Greys are the foxiest, and the Little Red. The Blacks and Speccies (Spectacled Flying-Foxes) are much more doggy. Welcome to Megabattie, I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care. There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies. You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow. There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.

Are the Batties in your area being affected by the Starvation Event?
@Megabattie2 жыл бұрын
It's not really a starvation event in that they're not starving per se; starvation events are when there are mass batties coming into care too skinny to survive. Starvation events usually involve babies, because the adult bats can fly somewhere when the food supply gets short and find something, somewhere. Starvation events in springtime usually involve babies 4-6 weeks old, because the mums can't leave the area with their babies because they are too big to fly with. She is tied to the area and her baby until the baby is too weak to survive and drops off, then mum can, if she has enough condition, fly off to save herself. Usually there is a mass drop of babies over a few days and the camp departs to somewhere where they can find food. Having said that - there has been a mini starvation event (we think) in the Shoalhaven with 40-50 adult males found within a few days, skinny and dead on the ground. I'm not sure if it's ongoing (it's 3 hours south of me). I'll check with Janine who will know what's going on.

You wait till they appear - they're very very squirmy and burrow into their fir. They're hard to catch. They're more prevalent in the rainy weather and it's raining AGAIN and still. They're in lots of videos. Try googling nycteribiids and look at the images. Nycteribiid species are specific to the species of bats - so blacks and greys and speccies and little reds all have specific subspecies of nycteribiids. Nycteribiids also have their own parasites.

It's an incubator and it keeps them warm. A bat who is unwell or young doesn't need to be cold as well, so we warm them up like mum would warm them against her body, enclosed by her wings.
