Which I'd guess is primarily due to the "not vaccinated for bat-borne diseases" thing (since not that many vets/nurses expect to treat them regularly), not necessarily a lack of wanting to treat them.
@Megabattie4 күн бұрын
Many vets will take them in in the box the MOP brings them in, then desperately call for rescue. One vet called me 10 minutes before they went home because they had a baby bat who arrived in the morning, got put into a cage, unwrapped, on the metal bottom of the cage, then forgotten about all day. It was a half hour drive for me to get there and they were impatient for me to arrive. The vet said baby was fine and they couldn't see anything wrong; I held my tongue Baby was naked, premature, newborn, freezing cold, and extensively burned with blistering. I took her to a "real" vet and had her euthanased. RIP little Frenchie.
@Megabattie4 күн бұрын
IN Australia we don't have rabies in the terrestrial wildlife, pet or domestic livestock population, but we do have ABLV Australian Bat Lyssavirus which is in the bat population, which is one of the rabies family of viruses. This means there is no reason for vets to be vaccinated for rabies. The only thing you can catch directly from a bat in Australia is rabies, IF you are bitten or scratched by a bat who is actively infected. I think most vets find bats scary; vets are just part of the human spectrum, with likes and dislikes. Most vets won't see snakes or bats because they're scared of them. The batty people understand this and find vets who are happy to see bats. I used to have 3 vet practices where I could bring a bat, now I have one. Vets come and go, move practices to inconvenient places, and we just adapt.
@redfailhawk4 күн бұрын
@@Megabattie I understand this, as a reptile keeper. Only vet that sees snakes anymore is two towns over, an hour away for me. No one else sees them. Which sucks because the time I take to get there in an actual emergency just isn't worth it due to the stress on the animal. I've learned a lot over the years about doing what I can at home, and if I can't do it I call other keepers. Thankfully (knock on wood) it's been four years since the last incident. (Snake was fine!! She is doing well still.)
@danfarris1354 күн бұрын
Here in our State in America it wasn’t too hard to find a vet to treat our raccoons in the 70’s and 80’s and reasonably affordable costs that we could pay out of pocket. Now it is virtually impossible to find ones that will treat injured wildlife. If you do, the costs are unreasonable to afford for the treatments. Sadly, the animals suffer and cannot be helped other than basic antibiotics and wormers. We can no longer care for them in the way that we used to so we had to stop taking them in.

How long is it from birth-to first flight for a flying fox?
@Megabattie4 күн бұрын
Earliest fliers are about 7 weeks old, but they're not fit for sustained flight, just flapping around trying to steer and learning to land. Usually it's about 10 weeks in care, but I've rescued 7.5 week old babies more than a kilometre from the colony, and 7 weeks is too big for mumbat to be carrying them around with them so he had to have arrived under his own steam.

How come you guys don't put a little valium in the glucose to help relieve their anxiety? I mean, they're bein handled by giant, bald monkeys - granted very gently and all that - but their primal survival instincts are on full alert aren't they? So that dumps cortisol and stuff doesn't it? I'm asking because I'm not a vet lol I just don't understand WHY they don't give them some kind of calming agent first, instead of keeping them in this kind of state of panic the whole time?
@Megabattie2 күн бұрын
You again. If you ask nicely instead of being critical, I'm perfectly prepared to answer, but your tone is accusatory which is rather offensive. Medically valium isn't either recommended nor required. The dummy (pacifier) does a heap more to settle their anxiety and stress than drugs, and wrapping them on a roll, something onto which they can clutch, does a heap more. I need to see if there's anything wrong with the baby that would require vet treatment before I leave the vet; I need to know if the baby has broken anything, has bleeding anywhere, has any issues with her mouth or wings. It's better to get it sorted out before I leave the vet (if they're willing to help), so I don't have to take it to another vet for xrays or stitching or something. The baby is already full of adrenaline from the accident and being on the ground, and being transported to the vet; I just do what I need to do, give them something for pain plus some fluids under the skin, and more glucose (combats shock), and put them to bed for a few hours. It works remarkably well.
@NI4NI-y5f2 күн бұрын
ps and if her teeth are coming that HAS TO HURT so why are you picking at them and with your bare fingers on top of it!? They're already in physical trauma and fear and then we're gonna do show and tell on them? I don't get the prioritization for the patient in that at all. Ma'am your staff have access to GOOGLE, they can go look up "baby bat teeth" THERE and that way the animals' trauma IS REDUCED. How in the world keeping them in a state of psychological trauma, when it's NOT medically necessary at all (in fact, 'trauma' ISN'T a desired state of any kind and negatively impacts healing, not helps it, and rather undermines the point of 'animal welfare'). It's coming to you under ER conditions and then being treated like an object to be studied when, again, YOUR STAFF CAN REFER TO GOOGLE ffs. Are you a control freak? Do you need to be seen as a woman with power and expertise? Is that why the little bat has to put up with being a 'teaching moment'? It's already coming in traumatized. I don't understand why there's a disconnect about that with some of you vets.
@Megabattie2 күн бұрын
I don't have staff; I'm a volunteer and I was showing the vet staff this because it's in my interests and the bats' interests that vet staff aren't terrified of bats, and will continue to allow them into their practice and calling us for rescue. SO many vet practices will not even allow bats through the door of their practices, that I find if I'm friendly, show them the bat, do a little education and reality training, they will continue to not be freaked out by bats and at least give them a safe haven till I arrive. A little PR goes a long way. I am NOT a vet but the vets ask me what to do with bats because I'm the expert. If that's OK with you - of course you're a youtube self appointed keyboard expert who always knows best. Now go and find something real to do with your life rather than criticising people who are actually doing something, and doing it well. And no it doesn't hurt to look at their teeth; I look at their teeth at rescue because I want to know if there's anything wrong in their mouth.
