So, besides Bakura being one of my favorite villains, I do have a personal reason of why I specifically like the destiny board cards. I had a therapist back in 2010. He actually collected Yugioh cards, something I was a huge fan of. We dueled every time I came in and he would ask me the questions he had to. Anyways, on my *final* visit, he gave me the cards to remember him by. I still have them in a binder set up perfectly. I won’t trade them. Just a nice little memory.

The reason why I like Bakura’s deck is because it made me brave and bold when I was timid and meek. All those scary looking fiends and zombies taught me how to use fear and to intimidation how defeat my opponents in a duel but use these tactics in RL. Fear is a powerful tool for leverage

It always seemed a bit weird to me how eventually the characters were just fine with Bakura being possessed by the evil spirit. They just got to a point where they were like "Okay, Bakura's evil now, and there's nothing we can do about it."

I have to agree, it really made it feel like the kid that the evil spirit of the ring was possessing more or less a non character, like he only existed because the spirit needed a host body to control. It could've been FAR more interesting if they actually expanded more on Bakura himself and showed more to him and how being possessed by an evil spirit affected him, there was so much potential to make a more complex and compelling character that was ultimately wasted

I don't know about the Manga but in the anime, everytime they "defeated" Evil-Bakura he returned and put up a fascade of innocence, only stopping to smirk at the camera. Both Duelist Kingdom & Battle City had the characters believe, with good reason, Bakura was good after defeating him.

Konami really wanted there to be fair alternate win conditions for this game back then, but now every duel is more about combos, you don't see many lockdowns either.

Destiny Board is by far my favourite Alt-Win-Con in the entire game. It's a shame it has never seen play. They could easily give Bakura the Ishuzi treatment of retraining the Gen 1 DM Vanillas into an actual archetype centered around Destiny Board. Was of searching out Dark Sanctuary and Destiny Board, setting up some protection for said cards and allowing for a general stall/stun strategy. More stuff which works with the 2017 era of support and maybe a boss Monster that when it attacks fetches a Spirit Message from the deck like Sentence of Doom. They could even do something mad with Change of Heart - a card very important to Bakura, as a character.

I think Bakura should get a another new version of Dark Necrofear that searches Destiny Board and makes it immune to card effect as long as it is in the gy or something like that

It is worth noting that Destiny Board did see some fringe experimentation as an alternate way to win with Mystic Mine, besides Burning the opponent. The Dark Spirits of Malice & Banishment also were used in Fiend control decks such as Labyrnth, Unchained D/D/D and Darkworlds. Again, that was only fringe. Oh and Dark Sanctuary saw some play as a troll/stall card, which was funny.

Probably because Konami felt the original manga effect (one continous trap with a 5 turn count that could be activated when Dark Necrofear was destroyed) was both too difficult to activate but also OP once it was activated. So they tried getting around both problems but with mixed results.

What if the “Spirit Message” spells had an effect or 2 to help them stay out long enough to win the game? Current effect: _ This card can only be placed on the field by the effect of "Destiny Board"._ Shared effect: _Once per turn, if your opponent destroy or banish this card by card effect, you can discard 1 spell card from your hand instead._ Shared effect 2: _If this card is placed on the field by the effect of “Destiny board”, you can add 1 “spirit message” card to your hand from your deck or GY._ (so you can either recycle spirit message cards that may have entered the GY beforehand, or use them as discard fodder for the above protection effect while having a potential way to retrieve them later on.)

1.Despite not being a competitively viable strategy, its easily one of the coolest alternate win conditions in the whole game 2. The saddest part is that the anime/manga version of Destiny Board is *much* worse than the version we got. Its genuenly one of the few times where the real life version is actually *better* For one, you couldn't even *play* Destiny Board unless Necrofear was in the GY. And Necrofear could only be summoned by banishing fiend monsters that were destroyed in the last 5 or so turns So, ironically, Konami did us a huge favour there 3. In all fairness the recent support did alleviate many of the problems of Destiny Board. I just wish they'd released something that actually lets you *search* the cards themselves. Eliminating the problem of them clogging up your hand

Card Trader is good for this, but its OPT and you can draw the same card again if your doing 40 card Destiny Board with lots of draw power. Link Disciple and Skulldread solves this too but too inconsistent to the deck focusing on this alt wincon. Which the only answer to actually help this alt wincon to be actually viable is new retrains and new supports that focuses on milling or shuffling those Destiny Board pieces back to the deck, also grants different floating effects for each Letter destroyed like board wipe, Banish GY, Draw 2, or Mill Fiend type monsters.

I completely disagree. For one, it doesn't matter how good Necrofear is, since you only need to dump it into the grave by any means and let it remain here. Secondly, manga one doesn't force you to run tokens in your deck nor clogs up your field with them. And thirdly it just makes more sense for ouija board to worj when you have a spirit in your grave, I wish they used that as a balancing tool instead of forcing us to run a bunch of garnets.

In the OLD DAYS (of Gx era) there.were.some rouge decks that used destiny board as only fodder for summoning HAMON. even his character deck in Yu-Gi-Oh GX World championship 2008 for the NDS uses HAMON in his deck.

A couple things that come to mind on some points made. It's possible that the board got removed in part because of occult but it might have also been a legal thing. Ouija is a registered trademark so possibly the US card art was worried that featuring one might cause issues and figured better safe than sorry. I don't think it's the case but it's more plausible than the Neos Air flight services theory. I think that Dark Sanctuary didn't get printed initially because both it seemed a card that would potentially be too powerful at time of release and also that Konami would have had no clue how to work its mechanics in the game at that state. Even with how Dark Sanctuary currently works, it still doesn't feature the mechanics of the ghost entirely, instead opting for the coin flip.

That is true about the Copywrite. Besides the superstition in the United States in which a ouiji itself is bad to play especially if you do not follow the rules it specifically includes. Yes people tried to contact the dead. The meme is real ; Ohio did have spitualists teach people how to do so in 1886 through camps or something. Catholics and other Christian denominations advise against ever using the board for that purpose. When Yugioh was barely getting it’s popularity in the states; a group of fundamentalists decided to set a whole bunch of them on fire in New Mexico in 2001 for their ideology. The copywrite is real though. Konami ain’t gonna pay Hasbro that bought the rights for it and Konami must had gotten the memo from its business partners to censor it considering it had a bad public opinion over here in The United States since the 1970’s

As cool as the Destiny Board scene was in the anime, I always preferred the “Necro” mill deck Bakura used in his final duel against little Yugi. A shame that half those cards are still anime only, it would be interesting to see how they would try to make it work with Bakura’s other cards and if it would get as toxic as Ishizu-Tear. 🤔

To add even further context as to why Destiny Board was so bad on release, it came out at a time where cards like De-Spell, Seven Tools, and Remove Trap were printed in Starter Decks Yugi and Kaiba the year before and MST, Trunade, and another round of De-Spell, Seven Tools, and Remove Trap where printed in Starter Decks Joey and Pegasus in the same year as Labryinth of Nightmare. Cards like Heavy Storm, Dust Tornado, MST, Remove Trap, and Trunade also saw main set releases before LoD. Backrow removal was so bountiful and so heavily played that by the time Destiny Board released it was already hard countered by the overwhelming majority of decks from competitive to the playground. This is also an era where Graceful, Pot of Greed, and Upstart Goblin where still legal at three copies, so the chaces of pulling into any form of backrow removal in five turns was high.

There is a point where destiny board could be a amazing win con, it just needs the help, a deck that doesn't need spells or traps would be the first factor but it would also need a way to restrict the opponent so they can't destroy destiny board, now I'm not saying it would happen, but I did make a archetype that would make destiny board absolutely menacing, I call it Cyrens, a water zombie deck, it's spells and traps can be used by discarding them and paying an additional cost and then they have domains that are field spells that have various effects, all Cyrens are based on a fish, a type of music and, a famous plague, they use Cyren pestilence cards to make temporary flood gates that can remove factors of the game by discarding them and sacrificing a monster, while the cyren monsters all have a effect to make 2 cyren tokens anywhere on the board when removed from the field by card effect, it's main cards are meant to summon the cyren link monsters which gain effects that only work on the summon of any card with cyren in their name, including tokens, this deck doesn't set spells or traps or even use those zones, the spells will either leave the board before destiny board can be clogged or are meant to be discarded for costs or their discard effects, a deck that can use destiny board, protect it, and win with it.

They did. They made an entire archetype around protecting and setting up the cards. The problem with the deck was always more about it being really slow and limiting your backrow, rather than a lack of protection.

Apart from Exodia, Final Countdown is another interesting comparison. It's another alt win condition, but because it's so much harder to disrupt and doesn't clog the board you can do a much better job of stalling the time out even though it's even slower. In fact, Final Countdown remains limited in the tcg because it was actually competitive.

Good video, though this assumption that the card version of Dark Sanctuary was completely designed by LON and Konami just refused to release it for several years seems really silly to me. I think it's pretty obvious that they just... didn't know how to make it in a way that felt balanced for the card game at the time even by Konami standards, and eventually they revisited it. It's not like the Ichizu cards have secretly been in a vault for two decades or something. Other than that the video is basically totally correct though, DB is just Final Countdown but much worse because the win condition interferes with your ability to just play pure stun and can actually be interrupted even post DB activation.

Should've been such that the Board itself didn't kill the Messages, the Messages each had a specific function that could still be used independent of the Board, and a Message had a potent floodgate effect if placed properly.

This reminds me of one kid at school who was convinced Destiny Board was the BEST card ever. He also INSISTED that after each card was played, they could be placed in either the trap/spell zone or the monster zone. And also if he ran out of space to play the letters, then he could send the letters out of play and they would still count.

This last one would be pretty good. Like the board cards not being continuous and the board had the effect where if the cards with the 5 letters were activated, you win the game.

If I had designed destiny board I would have done one simple change: Instead of having the 5 cards in your spell / trap zones, I would banish them. If all 5 destiny board cards are banished from the game, you win. Would make it so that the 5 letters cannot be banished by any other way but Destiny Board's own effect / their own effect, though, with a hard once per turn.

In the 5Ds World Championship 2010 - Reverse of Arcadia video game one of the free duel single player opponents used a Destiny Board deck. Herald of Green Light attempted to get around the board clogging problem by using the Heralds of Orange, Green and Purple Light as hand traps, while using un-destroyable fairies like Arcana Force Zero - The Fool to stall. The problem was that one of the cards in your starting deck for this game was Twin Sword Marauder, which deals piercing damage and can attack twice if it attacks a defense position monster. So needless to say this was always a very easy opponent.

If Dark Sanctuary had been released in LON alongside Destiny Board, it would have had a completely unrelated effect. Probably something along the lines of roll a die to stop an attack and maybe inflict some burn damage.

I feel like the problem with Destiny Board clogging the field could’ve been solved by making it a one-card win condition that placed a counter on it for each letter, rather than a spell card that takes up backrow and deck space. It still has all the other problems stated, but it would’ve likely seen more play.

So I know card games fix everything, but why didn't Yugi and company find an exorcist? Like Get a Goddamn Priest Already. They exist. In churches, that is. Sometimes in other locations. Tell the Father that it's basically ancient Egyptian magic and that the ring is the source of the evil spirit. And tell him murder was involved in its creation. LOTS OF MURDER. They could have gone the LoR route with the world runes deck and have each piece do something, back then it would have been cool if you build your board while slowly gaining advantage. Now you'll need some crazy effects for you to build a BoD deck

Destiny board was actually really helpful in some of the gameboy advance games! The computer didn't run a lot of backrow hate, so you could use it to beat characters who were out of your league early in the game to rack up good cards. Just to clarify, I'm not saying this is meta. It just had a legacy similar to two headed thunder dragoninforbidden memories. An exceptional grinding tool

There’s nothing I want to be turned into a real competitive deck more than Destiny Board. I won a game with it when I was a kid and I’ve had a soft spot for it ever since. I don’t know how it could possibly work in the modern game without just being a bad FTK like Exodia but that’s what we pay Konami for.

i think Destiny Board and the Spirit Messages need some retrains. maybe some new spirit messages that count as the originals while having additional effects. maybe some protection, maybe and effect or 2 that speed the process up. and the option to activate them from the hand without having to wait for destiny board's effect.

Each letter should add a new effect to the field in exchange of clogging up the board. Like "F" is the win con and recruiter. "I" a token generator etc

Destiny board worked okayish in Duel links. That's about it. The flaws are too big that it's vulnerable. My "fix" would be with the trap. Change the effect to " This card can only be activated once per duel. This card can only be activated if a "Dark Necrofear", is in the graveyard. If Dark necrofear is in the graveyard this card is unaffected by all other cards. Destroy this card if there are no. "Dark Necrofear" in the graveyard. If this card is destroyed banish 4 spirit messages from your hand, deck, field or graveyard. At the end of each of your turns, starting next turn, activate a spirit message from your hand, deck or graveyard. As long as this card remains face up on the field "spirit messages" cannot be removed from the board. Once "spirit message" I, N, A, L are on the board you win the duel." Now the game changes to protect the graveyard and stall. I do not think this would be competitive. Graveyard targeting cards are common. But it does turn it into a ticking clock.

I always thought when each letter when placed would provide a special effect which turned off an aspect of the game. Like E/I would turn off traps, A/N would turn off magic cards. T/A would turn off creature effects, and H/L would end the game of course. And you can only have one copy of it in your deck.

sounds like something that could be worked as a set and called Mainframe CPU (field spell) then use the 5 backrow zones to activate various effects like you listed but maybe have them act as negates F. Mainframe CPU Generates 1 CPU counter during your standby phase, once per turn you can activate one of the following effects. * Remove 2 counters to place a "Mainframe" Spell from your hand or deck onto the field face up * Remove 3 counters to add 1 "Mainframe" Spell from your GY to your hand * Remove 4 counters to move as many CPU counters from 1 "Mainframe" spell to another * Remove 7 Counters to draw 1 card. 1. By Logic, Wave Motion Cannon is essentially a Destiny board but way better. In 5 turns, thats 5000 LP, which probably wins you the duel. Or at the least, after 3 turns, you have the OPTION to inlict burn damage..

It's funny the aesthetic purpose to make the board stressful only really worked in the YGO WC 2008 game where a boss had a deck built specifically around Destiny Board and used expendable stall cards and Horus to cause a mystic mine like state. In any other situation the alt win con doesnt work well at all lol

Problems I see with the Destiny Board support I see so far is Dark Sanctuary doesnt actually protect your trap destiny board So if that goes all your spirit messages are gone too Sentence of Dooms recursion effects is based on how many spirit messages or destiny boards you already have making it unreliable to get stall cards like one of othe many kuribohs or battle fader back to hand Both Necrofears only activates at the end phase where you are probably already dead The Dark Spirit Domination spell is way too slow and it not being able to use its effect the turn you searched with it makes the brickiness of your spirit messages even harder to compensate (Pantheism of the Monarchs lets you draw and search both at the same turn for comparison) Its just a shame because I really like Bakura

What would've made this easier back in the day is being able to place the other letters once they were in your hand after the trap activated back in LON, and I was abig stickler of this. Instead of waiting until the end of your opponent's turn to spell out, but to place as you acquired the parts would've made this more viable... less bricks in the house, so to speak 🏠 So, based on this logic, I guess the next stop on this ride would be Ancient Santuary and the Spirit of the Pharaoh playstyle?

@Link The reasons why I was thinking like this was because..well...we all know about Duelist Kingdom and all the stupid BS that came with it. 1. Joey always played FS like a normal monster even though FS is a fusion. 2. The stupid field boost and BS. Joey's Maskai couldn't kill Mai's Harpie because the lady is a flying type even when Maskai has the field boost. 3. Also FS is one of those iconic cards too. So I was like..might as well give FS one or some sort of Duelist Kingdom nonsense BS.

Okay, to be fair, 5-6 support cards cannot save a 20 year old archtype. Let’s see Destiny Board get a 11-card drop and then let’s see how bad they still are. Imagine a boss monster- “when this card destroys a monster by battle: activate 1 Destiny Board or 1 “Spirit Message” from your deck” (etc). Something like that.
