I think the error was making him a vanilla without a way to capitalize on that like a card or an archetype that gave you an advantage for having a vanilla monster on your side of the field. Without that he should have been and effect monster with just the effect of being able to summon him with contact fusion instead of poly or instant fusion. He would have been a much stronger and useful card that way

The thing with contact fusion is that all the monsters need to be on the field. At least with Poly, you can fuse from the hand and, at the same time, get rid of two bricks.

I feel like Theseus' overhype was caused in part by Jerome McHale's bizarre obsession with 5d's and synchros. When he said that he used Theseus' in "every deck (he) ran", we misinterpreted the statement to believe that Theseus would be applicable in all decks, not just synchro decks

The future of Synchro seems to be tokens treated as tuners just so the cards can actually have useful effects without clogging you with garnets, because otherwise Sneedlefiber would pull them from deck off normal summon Ash Blossom.

The best condemnation of this card came out in Dawn of Majesty: Alvain, Bird of Vanity. It was the exact same chassis as Theseus, but this time a level 2 fusion tuner. It was released as a common to no fanfare at all.

I personally think the Legendary Dragon retrains were the biggest let downs. 5 of the most meta defining Dragons in the game were said to get retrains. These being: CED, JD, DAD, REDMD and Trish. The fact all their names are abriviated should tell you how powerful and well known they are. Each one remade and for a Super-Type - meaning: Pendulum, Synchro, Xyz, Link and Fusion respectively. All of the retrains were nerfed versions of the original. They all had heavy restrictions, were over-balanced and were worse than just generic Extradeck monsters that were out in 2018. 4/5 of the original Meta Dragons were NOMI Monsters but they had easy summoning conditions and Synchro Trishular was very generic & splashable for Synchro decks. Retrain Dragons needed you to jump through hoops to get some really underwhelming effects that tier 2 archetypes could easily make, on their own. None of them saw any competitive play other than the CED Pendulum retrain seeing fringe uses (mostly because of the Pendulum Scale effect).

@@DROPBEAR9 True. I forgor about that. Though, it was more so because of Thunder Dragons all having floating effects when banished. More so a case of Fusion Trish being used for what it is rather than what it does. Same with Xyz DAD. Dragon was pretty powerful, in it's time. It's like Aqua Dolphine being used in Gouki. You have a mediocre card that can be used in a deck that really synergises and also produces so much advantage that you can afford running a bad card.

"4/5 of the original Meta Dragons were NOMI Monsters". My mistake. 3/5 were NOMI. REDMD wasn't strictly a NOMI but you would never Tribute Summon it because of the regular summoning effect being much more efficient. It's also worth mention that REDMD is a Red-Eyes card so you can search it out with Red-Eyes Insight, Metal Claws and all the other support. Way back in the day, this support didn't exist so hard drawing was the main option. So while not technically a NOMI... close enough.

@@EeveeReturn Yes I am. Ironically, it's better than Theseus. It's a LV2 tuner meaning it can be used for a lot of synchro extensions. And it's light which can be used in a lot of other strategies like a free light for Construct or Quaeritis. But it's still not that good. It's just a better target than Theseus. XP

Funnily enough, with MR5 and Ready Fusion, you could argue Sea Monster of Theseus is better suited to splashing today as a tuner option in other decks, than it was in 2017. In non-zombie world variants of Eldlich it could be used with conq or haquero in order to make Baronne, which is funny. Still not a meta defining card, but it is pretty cool as a notable low level fusion nonetheless.

Sea Monster of Theseus is like printing a card that on summon would search any Pyro-Type monster. Like, "Wow, that sounds really versatile... I can't think of anything good to use it in." Cards like Sea Monster are honestly stuff that I see as BEGGING for a deck to be made that uses similar sort of themes to them. A lot of broken cards had gone years without being hit because they only really became broken when a specific synergy was brought in (like over 20 banned cards are banned explicitly due to their interaction with a newer card/deck, such as Block Dragon, Auroradon, Neptune, Smoke Grenade, etc.) Did you know there is literally only seven WATER Zombie-type monsters, and literally four of them are variants of Mayakashi Yuki-Onna? What if we got an archetype of WATER Zombies that was Synchro-focused? Sea Monster of Theseus could see use there, especially if the archetype includes some generic benefits for running WATER monsters. I dunno, I think it's way more interesting to see Konami R&D making new, strong archetypes that are designed to give a spotlight to some old obscure card over just focusing on their new hotness or supporting cards that have already gotten a reputation in the community (like their new sets pushing Frogs and Blackwings). It makes it easier to balance the archetype as well since you generally won't need to worry about some busted combo by making it have synergy with an already strong set of monsters.

Haven't seen the video yet, but concerning Theseus: I love the Card and luckily found place in my Thunder Chaos Extra deck for it. I run 3 Ready Fusion and 1 Instant fusion anyway because with Kaminari Attack, it's a great combo starter. So if I don't need that particular combo, bringing out Theseus is an easy Level 10 Synchro with Dragondark. I usually use Cheng Ying because of his great synergy with the decks banish focus. Plus since Colossus is banned its a great way to get Dragondark's search of early in case I might need that for further Combos. It's also free link stuff in theory, and a target for Eschatos to banish. I love it. Edit: Yeah, okay. Hyping the card up like that is absolutely unjustified, I can see that.

I don't think the choices in the stats they gave it were a mistake. The mistake was...well...calling it the "BeSt CaRd Of 2017" when it so obviously wasn't. Was it a nice Instant Fusion extra deck tech that some decks could run? At the time of release, yes. But the "BeSt CaRd Of 2017"? HELL NO!

@@vgmaster02 sure you could use this in conjunction for synchro plays for Omega but at the time most 3s were used to make M-X-Saber Invoker instead. The best way for this to have been a more viable option (especially considering Norden's existence) would have been making it a 4 star tuner. It would have been even easier syncho 8s and plus 7s too. And rank 4s. Obviously considering what was released in 2017, hyping this up to be meta warping without considering the power level of the said releases was very much out of touch on Jerome's and/or Komani TCG points of view.

@@tzarecehle979 I mean...level 5 also means instant CyDra Infinity. And Norden was already in the game as a level 4 fusion that made instant rank 4 xyz/level 7/8 synchros, so having another one would've made it redundant and nobody would've played it because "Norden is literally better in every way and I can just revive a tuner from grave", so Theseus being a different level means options for Instant targets. Now, I do agree that maybe he could've had a level mod effect to adjust his level, but I still don't see level 5 as being bad. And I doubt they were out of touch. They rarity bumped the shit out of Zoodiac because they knew they were the money makers for Raging Tempest. I think, and I believe someone else mentioned this, that this was Jerome just being stuck in the synchro era and thought "an Instant Fusion target that's a tuner. This card is gonna break every single synchro strategy in the game. This is the single best card of 2017." and couldn't see the forest for the trees. In 5Ds era, yeah, Theseus would probably be a god send for decks. But in 2017? End of Arc-V/going into Vrains era? FAR beyond its prime before it even came out and should never have been hyped in the first place. I think this is purely Jerome's fault.

I think thould have made it a level 4 instead and let it change it's level up or down by 1. Would have been incredible for pretty much every Synchro deck, Xyz decks but with a big focus on R4nk Toolbox decks, and by proxy making Zoodiac even better since that was the big push at the time, an easier way to make Cyber Dragon Infinity in decks that otherwise couldn't, with niche play for Links as well especially once Halqifibrax got released. Having a pocket Gagaga Magician without the Synchro restriction, and for the cost of only 1 main deck card that is infinitely more useful anyways (Instant Fusion) would have been nuts. I guess the level system could have been the same though; Have it start as level 5 and then allow it to decrease it's level by 1 or 2 instead. It would help more rogue and fringe decks play around Skill Drain and Effect Veiler and Ghost Ogre and things like that for some of their bigger plays. You get what I'm saying.
