I remember seeing these products shown off in a magazine. I was so jealous that the OCG decks were almost 1:1 recreations of the characters decks in the show, where our Starter decks were just a hodgepodge, with some of the cards they used tossed in. To this day, the only one of those Japanese SD we ever got, was the Marik one.

The first 8 Japanese structure decks were absolutely groundbreaking. Aside from excellent reprints, they also came with side decks, something later decks never did. My personal favorite of the original 4 was Pegasus. Since toons were the closest thing we had to an archetype back then, it felt much more cohesive. The other theme of playing cards that looked at your opponent's hand alongside cards that could put that information to use was also a great idea.

I used to play online in 2002 before Yugioh virtual dueling on a program called "Apprentice" which was for Magic The Gathering, but I guess the core mechanics worked for yugioh as long as you downloaded the card packs. I made so many friends there and with the exception of 2-3 people, I've lost touch with all of them. We we're all teenagers/ young adults back then, I wonder what kind of people they grew into?

One could write a book about the early tcg and manga/anime. -The TCG Kaiba/Yugi starter decks were based off the original two player ocg starter deck EX that released in 1999 -The three bewds in the structure deck were different languages - a reference to the manga where kaiba has 3 bewds from different regions -Cyber Stein is a reference to the GBA games where kaiba would drop a stein/BEUD/megamorph OTK on unsuspecting players -The yugi/kaiba/joey ocg character structure decks feature cards from early battle city until virtual world (many of the holos debuted in the virtual arc) -cards like needle worm are not quite random. kaibas deck in battle city had a "deck destruction" theme, and this played into that theme when certain cards (virus cannon) had not been released yet

So, I remember back in the early 2000s seeing these decks for sale on some sites, and I was eagerly waiting for the TCG releases. Around that time Kaiba Deck 2 was also in listings featuring Kaiser Sea Horse, so I assumed that was its name for the TCG. SDDE -Dark Emperor will always hold a special place for me. Dimensional Alchemist only getting love years later when it was pretty nice from the drop always seemed crazy. Of course DDR & Caius overshadowed it but a rfp mill and ability to put back in hand monsters from a previously hard to interact with area was great. I liked siding out of a macro monarch/anti-meta strat to a DAD monarch variant that could abuse scout plane & alchemist. Wasn't SJC level competitive but three structure decks and (outside DAD) a few songles if you didnt already have them and you could end up in the top 8 of most locals pretty consistently. If you had kept a playset of solemns you seemed like a genius when it went from rarely used and limited to unlimited

Doesn't Konami in general have the problem that we in the TCG don't get worse versions of the decks compared to the OCG? I remember hearing about them taking them cards out of recent structure decks. I love Yu-Gi-Oh but rarely play it physically nowadays and stuff like this is why I don't want to start at the moment. If someone wants to correct me, or explain to me why and how I am wrong (because I probably am) please do.

They should release theses for the 25th anniversary as an homage to the DM early era and it’s not they would be meta defining or extremely expensive cards for degenerate second hand market Just reprints and nostalgia for the cover board collection
