Listening to these bass tracks really makes me understand why Mustaine used to comment that at the time all the other bassists in the metal scene were afraid of how good Ellefson was. Truly Megadeth's secret weapon.

When did he say that?

@@rocafella142 Just because he's a trashy person doesn't mean he isn't an excellent bassist. Sure, he's not Megadeth's "secret weapon" anymore, but he certainly was on all of their classic albums and nothing will ever take that away.

@thirteenthandy I agree. Ellefson is my favorite metal bass player 🙂 But what I mostly meant is now Mustaine shits on his playing. Mustaine said he wrote all his parts on bass. And said bass players aren't talented and said the bass is one step up from the kazoo

Lets not go there. Both equally awesome. And always remember, Burton was a finger bassist, while Ellefson is a pick bassist. Burton had more of a classical based spacey bass sound while Ellefson is more raw and jazz based. Different styles within one awesome genre. Respect to both.

I'll have to disagree. Although Ellefson was cleaner and tighter than Cliff in recordings, Cliff would absolutely destroy Ellefson as far as songwriting, creativity on his basslines, technique (just look at his solos), innovation (the use of wah and heavy distortion) and style. But let's just enjoy both of them equally!
