The bummer is that they didn’t do that with the RIP lineup. Because I’m really wondering if Dave could’ve played and sang “Poison was the cure” correctly back then during his prime. Nowadays, he plays a simpler version of the verse riff.

When Megadeth recorded RIP, Guns n Roses was recording in the studio down the hall, and Slash kept swinging by and bringing clips to the band, going 'you guys are not going to believe what they are doing over there!'. One listen and this became my favorite album. 25 years later, it remains one of my favorites. It never gets old. I still love playing along with all these songs on guitar. It's an absolute masterpiece that will endure for eternity. Probably the single best lead guitar showcase of all time between Marty and Dave (who deserves way more credit than he gets as a lead guitarist). Can't say enough about the greatness of RIP.

The UGM-27 Polaris was a submarine-launched nuclear ballistic missile (SLBM) used by the US & UK navies between 1961 and 1996. It was the first American SLBM, and carried 3 reentry vehicles (bombs) of 200 kilotons yield each. That's what Dave is talking about.

A lot of people refer to Megadeth as "technical" like that's the main thing that someone would listen to them for. I'm a massive Megadeth fan and I tell you I don't give a fck about the fact that something is technical or not, I love Megadeth for their super nasty riffage, jazzy-swing-fast grooves, adrenaline pumping drums and beautiful melodies.

I love Megadeth too! My favorite band. I think why technical is thrown in all the time is because they simply are just the best technically sound and intricate out the most well known metal bands. Rust in Peace Polaris is the epilogue of this masterpiece. Is Mustaine and the band doing the heaviest song (lyrically and musically) of the record to give us a last shot of what the world could actually look like if a nuclear war happens and talking in the perspective of the missile. For me, everytime I see in the news some nuclear test from some country, this song comes to mind. It's totally dark and heavy. Dave on a genius songwriting level on this one. And yes, they've played this live. A lot of times.

The UGM-27 Polaris was a nuclear missile system used on U.S. submarines from the 1960s and 1970s. What's funny (or maybe "interesting" is a more accurate word than "funny") is that when the album came out (in 1990), the Polaris missile had been retired for 10 years (U.S. submarines have carried variants of the Trident missile system since 1979). This song is a great example of how many thrash musicians in the United States, like their punk counterparts in the United Kingdom in the 1970s, were heavily influenced by the Cold War doomsday that hung over their heads as kids and teenagers.
@WWROABM
@WWROABM 8 ай бұрын
And this was Nick Menza’s first album behind the kit. He was a roadie up until this point. Marty walked in off the street and laid down some crazy stuff. A little note - Dave and Dave had most of this written before Nick and Marty came in and gave it their touches. Chris Poland - the original guitar player - played a lot of the solos in pre-production. All that said, easily the original release is probably one of the top 5 greatest metal albums ever. Master of Puppets, South of Heaven, Black Sabbath, Rust in Peace, and add another record of your liking. And Rust in Peace is probably the technically proficient. Bye the way, they can definitely do this live. They could do it then and can still do it now. Absolutely badass record!!!

Polaris was the previous generation of Submarine-launched Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles used by the USA and UK. Polaris was often in the news when I was growing up with debates about whether to upgrade or replace them at vast expense, or do unilateral nuclear disarmament which was the peace cause in the UK promoted by CND, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. They were replaced with the Trident Sub-launched ICBMs, which allows multiple independently targeted re-entry vehicle (MIRV) payloads, which also required the UK to invest in a new generation of nuclear missile submarines. They depend on the US satellite network for GPS targeting, so in fact the UK's "Independent Nuclear Deterrent" has to ask for US permission to be re-targeted or used, so there's no independence about it at all.

I will never forget getting to see them play this whole album front to back. Craziest pit I’ve ever been in.

I almost got crushed to death in a pit at Ozzfest 98 when Megadeth came out. I was right at the barrier in front of the stage and as the intro played I could feel the crowd squeezing together and I looked at my friend and said. "Oh shit" because I knew we were in trouble. As SOON AS the riff for Holy Wars started, the crowd erupted and slammed us into the barrier. We had to fight our way out and didn't find each other until about an hour later. A valuable lesson was learned that day.

I was 16 when this album came out and there was nothing like it. I remember spending that winter walking around with my yellow Walkman blasting this non stop along with Metallica’s AJFA, and State of Euphoria by Anthrax. What a great time for metal music.

It would be interesting for you to revisit holy wars, I believe it was your first introduction to Megadeth and you really didnt know what you were getting into. As your knowledge of music has grown over the years, it would be cool to see what you think of an og song

Dave mustain has stated that these songs are perfection the way they were recorded in studio. So that's the way they are played live too. End of story.. this lineup was the most incredible group of musicians in heavy metal.

Metallica , in their first bassists garage 1982 , kept a tape ready in a tape deck to hit record on to save riffs and ideas in case they forget and at one point to hear Dave hit record and since he didn't have a guitar handy he just starts humming the riffs to this song , rust in peace .

Rust In Peace is, to me, the epitome of thrash metal. They may have been surpassed by Metallica in terms of popularity, but from start to finish, Rust In Peace is a showcase of technicality, musicianship (those are two different things!), and songwriting. The ebb and flow throughout the entire album is incredible, and they balance incredible individual moments with a group sound that is unparalleled. Lightning in a bottle.

Easily my favorite Megadeth album. Very technical and good from start to finish. Other megadeth songs to consider in the future: Good morning/Black Friday, hook in mouth, ashes in your mouth, train of consequences. Thanks for this. Nice to see reactions when hearing this for the first time, even if you don’t like all of it.

It's clear that George and Ryan have come to appreciate the musical genius required to develop a masterpiece like RIP. I believe they may find what they're looking for in some of the less intense and more melodic albums, such as Cryptic Writings, The World Needs a Hero, Youthanasia, etc. There are some very groovy tracks with amazing melodies on those albums. Let's start suggesting some tracks that bridge the gap between their taste for bluesy/groovy jams and our taste for face melting thrash! I'm always stoked when they decide to react to another Megadeth song! Keep it coming!

First Megadeth album.. Looking Down the Cross. Bit raw mixing, but damn, the dynamics of this song.. You'll have a field day with the changes and progressions.. AND the um.. lightness of gain in the guitars but still heavy as hell.

yup, everybody is complaining about the mix in this album, but i like it, there's a raw feeling to it that i really love. Sometimes (emphasis on "sometimes"), i feel we lose something when the mix and mastering are "too clean". To me, what you can hear on this album is the raw energy of youth. I can't even listen to the remastered version, it doesn't sound better to me.

Dave has said he came up with the album title after seeing a bumper sticker that said something along the lines of "your warheads can rust in peace " which is also a line in this song.
