"That's not just a great guitar solo, that's a spectacular guitar solo!" Incorrect! That's THE greatest and most spectacular guitar solo of all time! For us metal guitarists, it's the same as Rachmaninov's 3rd Piano Concerto is for concert pianists... and like most concert pianists it's beyond our ability. It's not just that it's technically difficult that makes it great, it's the structure, melody, precision and most of all its sheer beauty.

Same. Grew up a huge Metallica fan (still jam them), but when I started playing guitar I gravitated more towards Megadeth. Marty’s the perfect combination of technical proficiency and feel. @eccehomer8182 Жыл бұрын
@@petrilampela Whatever floats your boat... personally I don't think he has the compositional abilities of Marty and for me that makes him a better musician. LaRocque reminds me of Petrucci... unbelievable technique, but it's just porn. Marty makes love to your ears.
@petrilampela
@petrilampela Жыл бұрын
@@eccehomer8182 Hmm, have you really heard much of his stuff? I absolutely hate shredding, I'd rather have no solos at all. It's precisely the melodic side to his solos that make LaRocque better for me. I sometimes find myself humming parts of his solos by myself and I don't think I've ever done that with Marty. But anyway, both of them have a very melodic way of composing the leads and that's why I love them. Petrucci has done some very good solos (like Lines in the Sand) but mainly it's just technical brilliance and that does nothing for me. When talking about just metal guitarists I also love Criss Oliva and Alex Skolnick, they are a bit more on the shredding side than Friedman and LaRocque but still very melodic. Dimebag also had some great ones.
@eccehomer8182
@eccehomer8182 Жыл бұрын
@@petrilampela Like I said... whatever floats your boat. I've heard enough and just don't find his phrasing has as much beauty as Marty's. Andy's style seems a bit disjointed to me and whilst I agree he's not just a shredder, I can't agree with the melodic part, though there are moments. There's no doubt he's exceptionally talented and I'd love to have 10% of his ability. But the difference I find in Marty's playing is that his solos have a fluidity that runs their entire length. They're not just a series of brilliant phrases... they are complete entities... an essential part of the song and not just an interlude to show off his skills. And that's why he has the edge for me. The only other pure metal guitarist I can think of who had a similar fluidity was Randy Rhodes. Technically, Liszt was better than Chopin... but even Liszt said Chopin was the better composer. When the level is this high, then I think it comes down to something more esoteric... beauty... which we all know is in the eye of the beholder.
@petrilampela
@petrilampela Жыл бұрын
@@eccehomer8182 I agree with you a 100% that Andy DOES play scales that go up and down that don't really mean anything. You are absolutely right. But then he does these super melodic bits too that stick in your head. My favourite is A Visit from the Dead (King Diamond), already the acoustic solo in the beginning is cool and when the drum beat starts he does this descending bit that sounds so beautifully off and weird. BUT it's the ending solo (5 minute mark into the song) that has this beautiful melodic bit in the middle that has to be my favourite moment in any guitar solo ever. But again, yes the solo starts and ends with these scales that don't really do anything. I guess his tone is the main reason I love his playing so much though, the use of neck pickup combined with his massive slow vibrato (that's often complemented with a harmony guitar) just sounds so freaking good to me. The first time I heard Andy's playing was on Death's Individual Thought Patterns and I later found out that he pretty much improvised all the solos on the spot. His guitar tone is absolutely perfect on that album to me.

Normally, remastered is NOT a lot of difference, but with Megadeth, they released their catalog as "REMIXED & Remastered", and it's the remixing that is the problem. Remastering, the original recordings are boosted and enhanced without much mucking around, but remixing means taking all the original master tapes of each track (guitars, drums, bass, vocals, etc) and completely re-tooling shit, sometimes adding or removing certain elements. Remaster = good, no big diff from the previous/original release Remix = total change, like when a recipe has its ingredients altered - purist listeners beware Sometimes a remastered (or even in some cases, newly RE-RECORDED) track is wrongly labeled as "remixed" (and vice versa). Inconsistencies and misnomers like this are why there's so much confusion in recording/mixing categories. That all said.... YES, PLEASE avoid the "R&R" recordings from Megadeth. It will be difficult cos KZbinrs mis-identify their uploads all the time (either cos they don't know or don't care), but every effort you make to obtain the originals would be great & appreciated! :-)

You guys are lucky because you have 40 years of material at your finger tips. If you want the real experience i suggest going all the way back to the beginning of Megadeth and experience how the band evolved over the last 40. Killing is my Business. Just my opinion.
