@@javtimestwo John Sykes did ruin a good thing, but David Coverdale was not the only one laughing all the way to the bank. John Sykes also got paid extremely well for his songwriting and guitar playing on Whitesnake's 1987 studio album. It is just a shame that it happened this way. @@caljerm Bullshit, Sarzo was and is one of the most sought after bass players ever to walk and has a rap sheet miles long of reputable and respectful collaborations and has worked with many great bands. On top of that, he learned a lot from the late, great Randy Rhoads, which if I’m not mistaken, Sykes is also a fan of. Neil Murray is a fantastic bass player, especially paired with Cozy Powell, yes the both of them bring a big sound to the band and compliment Sykes guitar tone nicely and he is better in Whitesnake I’ll give you that, but overall it’s bullshit to say he can play circles around Sarzo. Also keep in mind the number of times Sarzo has filled in and had to learn songs quickly for tours, more than you’d think. Plus just like Murray and Powell, you put Sarzo and Aldridge together and it’s the same magic. What they did for Ozzy and Rhoads, Murray and Powell did for Coverdale and Sykes. No comparison.

Atleast one minus... Ripped - off "Here I Go Again". Original is way much better. Ofcourse it is a matter of opinion.

I just realized that Sykes Microphone is not in the mix. Guess David felt threatened by him even back then. Sykes is a superb vocalist

This was the perfect formation for Whitesnake. But it needs a secon guitarist. Micky Moody or Adrian Vanderberg.
@ronforeman25568 жыл бұрын
Uh, neither Moody nor Vandenberg could shine Sykes' shoes.

Whitesnake's various lineups historically had two guitarists, and Sykes ostensibly joined the band to "replace" Micky Moody and play alongside Mel Galley (who, it should be noted, was lead guitarist with bassist-vocalist Glenn Hughes in Trapeze before Hughes and Coverdale joined Deep Purple, but that's another story.) If Galley had not injured his hand horsing around with Sykes near the end of Whitesnake's 83 European Tour, he would have participated in the American and Japanese legs. Coverdale has said he even kept Galley on salary for months after the accident, hoping his condition would improve. So Sykes became THE MAN, somewhat by default. A guy can get used to that kind of attention, and so it's not surprising that Coverdale's proposal to add Adrian Vandenberg as second guitarist didn't sit well with John Sykes. Whether Sykes overplayed his hand of Coverdale felt he had to reassert control and demonstrate once again that ANYONE could be replaced, one thing is for certain: Audiences that bought those millions of copies of the "Whitesnake" album would be bitterly disappointed when they realized that the band who recorded the album was not the same as the band who promoted it one tour. And that disappointment would linger, as sales of the follow-up album, "Slip of the Tongue," which featured Adrian Vandeberg and Steve Vai. paled in comparison to those of "Whitesnake," which was Sykes' baby.

True, but if Mel Galley hadn't broken his arm, he'd have been there on this tour (until eventually getting fired...as they all did). ;-)

We should all kneel down and thank the Lord above for parting those celestial clouds and allowing the Heavenly to light of Divine Inspiration to shine down on John Sykes and Bob Rock during the recording sessions for what became the seminal "Whitesnake"/"1987" album. How else can we account for the God-like guitar sound and performances Sykes achieved? To hear David Coverdale tell it, in the liner notes to the 20th Anniversary (2007) remastered "Deluxe Edition" of the album, Sykes might as well have been picking the singer's pocket in his time-consuming effort to achieve the right sound. "It got pretty crazy at times," Coverdale says. "I remember coming in and seeing the room full of giant speaker towers. The studio was stacked solid with a whole PA system. "Apparently, John was so enamoured with the sound he'd had in rehearsal in Los Angeles, he'd tried to recreate it there (Little Mountain Studios in Vancouver, B.C. ed.) out of sheer frustration at not getting the sound he was hearing in his head." Coverdale's dismissive account reveals an astonishing ignorance of, and contempt for, the recording production process. Jon Sykes contributions made Coverdale a god-zillionaire, and got a swift kick in the ass in return. True fans took notice. Coverdale's arogance and condescension should not be surprising, given the fact that NONE of the Whitesnake albums released prior to Sykes joining the band were anywhere near as good as any of the trio of Mk. III Deep Purple records on which Coverdale was lead vocalist. (Even those Whitesnake albums recorded when Purple compatriots Jon Lord and Ian Paice were in the band were subpar.) Before Sykes agreed to join the band, Coverdale was headed for Rock 'n Roll oblivion. For Sykes, his tenure in Whitesnake proved to be the best and worst of times. The tour that culminated wtih the band's appearance at Rock In Rio--Sykes's apothesis-- became the stuff of legend. But he would be robbed of his just desserts by being fired and thus unable to tour and perform those incredible songs from a truly landmark album, the outstanding quality for which he was PRIMARILY responsible. Quite a bitter pill to swallow.

This is good shit. I never listened to any Whitesnake before the self titled album. The 70’s rock influence on this era of the bands sound is fantastic. The Thin Lizzy, Zeppelin and Deep Purple all mashed up with a side of Rainbow. Crying n the rain existed already? Who knew?
@pekkalindqvist2001 Жыл бұрын
Crying in the rain was in 1982 album Saints and sinners, as was original Here I go again. I think I read somewhere that Coverdale thought some of the best pieces he wrote were in that album, but he wasn't pleased with playing in that album. My favourite from that album is still Victim of love.
