And given the release date, they directly forced a comparison to Despicable Me even though the movies are NOT targeting the same audience. Marketers _should_ have targeted teenagers/nostalgic adults instead of kids. Edit: I looked for the exact commercial (because it was the one to convince me not to watch MM back in the day) but I cannot find it. I still feel MM would have done better if handled better by the marketing. It's a lovely classic.

I would have to disagree on successor series of Dreamworks movies being worse. I mean How to Train your Dragon: Riders of Berks was really good. 6:43-6:49, I noticed the same thing with another sequel that tried cashing in on the cult following for an underrated animated movie that came out well over a decade earlier with Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to the Rescue. That movie also spliced in footage from the original movie, reminding us of how much worse the new animation is, watered down any of the elements from the original that appealed to adults to make it just for kids, and retconned ideas like how Nicodemus foretold a prophecy that Timmy, the little boy dying of pneumonia in the first movie, would become a savior for the rats of NIMH even though he did nothing of the sort. I was 5 when it came out and even then I knew I was watching something that wasn't as good as the original since I had the VHS tapes for both films and while I watched the first one repeatedly, the second one was a one-and-done for me and I completely forgot about it until the Nostalgia Critic's review for it years later and I was like "oh yeah, that sucked!"

Megamind never needed a sequel, it was a contained story and premise. “What if the super villain won but it turned out he wasn’t such a bad guy after all?” Once the first movie ended that was it. A Megamind sequel was never going to work great because it was always just going to be for additional content not additional story, the story had already been told, so when I heard a megamind 2 was gonna be a thing I was prepared for disappointment and yet it still managed to disappoint beyond belief. It didn't just struggle with telling a new story or continued story but just completely disrespected the original story, retconed shit that didn't need to be, and devalued the theme and character development of the original film. It's easy for a sequel to not live up to the original or not make the story better but it takes a special type of stupid to make a sequel that actively makes the original worse Edit: also Incredibles 2 highlights this well it wasn't as good but it didn't take away from the original. The theme of the incredibles was the importance of family, and the characters throughout the film learned lessons connected to the themes that made them better people by the end of the film, the 2nd movie where not as good, respected those lessons and even if some actions slightly differed from them overall it didn't feel like it was just "And our heros learned an important lesson and then immediately through it away when we stopped filming" Whereas the Megamind sequel did exactly that. it's the equivalent of if at the end of megamind we got an epilogue speech that was like "And not long after some old villain friends of mine showed up, which I lied to you through the film about me being alone the whole time btw, and instead of immediately acting as the hero I learned to be I allowed them to convince me to betray people that had began to trust me completing ignoring the lessons I just learned" if that had happened the whole movie would have felt pointless and even if the rest the movie stayed the same it would have felt so much worse of a movie, and the sequel just came in and did exactly that

Dude if they kept the same original animation the whole “he’s a hero now” thing would’ve flown but god like they’re catering to the new generation, when it grossed as much money it did because we are grown up. There is an invisible but very important time span between a movie's first release and their potential sequels to maintain consistency and have people interested and hungry for more. The Incredibles 2 proves this point; you just can't wait too long to make a sequel or else it will flop in every sense of the word because of the ever-changing times. Saying that, quoting Brad Bird, you "don't want to rush a sequel", knowing the first film was a colossal success makes you an absolute buffoon. You need to keep the momentum, otherwise you'll trip, which is exactly what happened to the sequel. Not to mention literally NOTHING changed but the graphics. Not even a semblance of character development was infused in the film. Nada. Now Megamind 2 has been dealt an even worse hand: -a very late sequel (14 years too late) -no OG voices -no theatrical release -outsourced animation because Dreamworks laid off too many people last year -has nothing close of an original plot; the antagonists were already introduced on the 2010 video game of the film, which actually serves as a sequel to the latter, and has so many console ports with different names on each that I won't bother naming them. If this is the path we're taking with sequels of beloved franchises, then maybe the world doesn't need Half-Life 3.

One of my favorite parts about the main movie is that megamind doesn’t name his hero Titan, he names him “Tighten”. The first movie has comedy that isn’t right in your face, you have to look for it, and in my opinion, that’s what makes a movie great. This new movie just makes me kind of sad that something so great could turn so bad.
