I'd add another win: genuine consequence when Roxanne first learns the truth. She doesn't magically get over it because he's come clean or learned his lesson. Megamind accepts that outcome and walks away; he HAS grown as a person, enough to realize he's not owed anything. A wonderful contrast to Titan's entire "nice guy™" mentality of expecting instant adoration without even caring about Roxanne as a person. Like, seriously, Megamind stole an entire city (and Bernard), but when the woman he likes says "no," he respects it and leaves her be.

As someone who’s dealt with a Nice Guy…I’d say the representative of Hal is scarily accurate. I can’t IMAGINE if the guy I knew had ACTUAL power over me.
@adarcus40539 ай бұрын
I dated a Hal I still dread the possibility of running into them like 15 years later. What a creep. Your point about Megamind respecting a No when he holds all the cards is great. It leaves you being like dude you are a villain but you have respect that a moral code and limits. Those things alone don't make you good but they do make you human and possibly redeemable. Titan has no limits and that makes him bad.
@rachelfox81088 ай бұрын
@@adarcus4053 It also reinforces the fact that Megamind only ended up in a life of villainy because by happenstance of landing in a prison, he was set on course to be a self-fulfilling prophecy, cast as a bad guy as a child by everyone around him to the point that he genuinely saw no way to succeed in life other than being the best at being bad. And once again, what had he done to be in that prison in the first place? Nothing, but be in the wrong place at the wrong time. And yet, as you said, he demonstrates just how much capacity he's always had for being good, something that he never lost. What I'm saying is that this film says a *lot* about racism, the incarceral system and the school to prison pipeline without even trying.

There's so many fun small details in this movie. Some of the ones not mentioned here that I noticed: - When Megamind goes to school for the first time you see him give a little smile; and then when he's leaving school and Metroman flies away with the schoolhouse, you see his face drop as he's being carted back to prison, losing his school privileges. He really wanted to fit in and that was the first moment he felt truly rejected. - His binkie is consistently used as part of his inventions; the tricycle laser, the popcorn laser, the dodgeball force field, even the dehydration gun... - After Roxanne is kidnapped and it cuts to Hal and the news van, behind the van you can see some people on the ground and some tipped objects, implying the balloon guy wasn't the only victim from the invisible car lmao - When Metroman is heading to the observatory, you can SEE the fake observatory in the background on the right for a few moments! - When Megamind is watching Roxanne's "city without a hero" broadcast, he looks out the window. In the distance you can see her and Hal and the news van at the base of the Metroman statue. - In Roxanne's inspirational speech about heroes, the first thing she mentions is bravery. When Hal is talking about the ninjas he totally fought, Megamind's first remark is "A brave one isn't he?" It comes across as sarcastic but in reality he's being genuine and already picturing what a "good fit" Hal is for the hero transformation. - In Hal's apartment, Megamind's cape collar gets displaced by the TV set because the apartment is just too small for it. - Metroman's love of music doesn't come from nowhere; in the opening school montage, he plays guitar in front of the class. - And last but not least, you can see the disguise watch on Metroman's wrist when he "returns," if you didn't just guess the twist, then it was possible to figure it out if you watched closely enough! This movie is incredibly solid and just plain old fun, the character chemistry is great, the continuity is nearly flawless, the messages and ideas presented are great food for thought, ugh. It's a shame more people don't like this movie- though it seems to be making a resurgence recently. The only complaint I have is, what were Megamind and Metroman's names BEFORE they started their hero/villain arcs? Like, they didn't pick those names until their battles became regular occurrences in their adulthood; sooo what did the prisoners name Megamind as a baby? What name did Metroman's parents give him?
@SugarThyme Жыл бұрын
I plan on putting out a video soon, but Megamind's prison name was probably "Mega Mind" and Metro Man was probably "Wayne Scott" (from the original script, and in the credits you can see his parents were "Scott". It's not too much of a stretch to say that he might still have the Wayne Scott name). Megamind likely didn't get a genuine name because he was in prison... He got a prison nickname. It's not like anyone adopted him, with a little bit of evidence for that in the movie and the comics.

One of the key differences between Megamind and Titan was the fact that one of them was doing it just because he was playing his role, and the other was doing it out of purely malicious intent. Megamind simply grew up believing he had to be the villain, and so he had fun with it. He messed around, came up with schemes to defeat his rival, and when one finally worked he couldn't actually believe it because why would it have worked? None of his plans worked in the past. And despite all the dangerous traps he shows Roxanne, she was never afraid of them because she knew he wouldn't actually hurt her. Meanwhile, Titan comes in and kidnaps Roxanne, and she's immediately terrified. This was someone new, an unknown, and it was scary for her. Then she finds out it was someone she considered to be a friend, or at least an acquaintance, and he was acting insane. Titan was genuinly terrifying to her because she could tell that if he didn't get his way, her life would be in danger. This is why Titan was the villain, he was the one with horrible intentions, and Megamind was the super villain, as super villains are known to be flashy, they're known for getting caught and then escaping, elaborate schemes that don't really go anywhere in the long run, etc. They did such an amazing job of portraying this as well. Megamind is truly a cinematic masterpiece.

I always loved the relationship between Megamind and Metro Man most. Sure, Metro Man was kind of an ass as a kid; show-off, arrogant, snobbish, but as adults they gain this relationship based on a mutual respect for showmanship and their own personal roles in the hero/villain dynamic. And I get the feeling that Metro Man always knew (and had faith) that Megamind would be an amazing hero. He probably knew that Megamind never intended any actual harm to the citizens of Metropolis, otherwise he never would have quite being a hero. And Megamind's love for their hero/villain dynamic was adorable. Like an actor who os genuinely and completely in love with what he does.

I saw it as Metro Man finally having grown up and realized that he had partial culpability in what became of the two of them - that Metro Man helped do to Megamind what Metro Man feels the city did to him. Metro Man becoming Megamind's quiet supporter and giving Megamind the space and freedom to figure out and choose his own identity is a sign that this very egocentric bully has grown up and realized the error of his ways. He's still very selfish and flawed in the ways he goes about it, but then, the whole point of his stance is that he's realized he neither wants nor is truly suited to being the city's hero, and the way he goes about his "retirement" just proves that.

One of my favorite tiny details is that Megamind says "Time out!" repeatedly at Titan during their first fight, probably because whenever Megamind said that to Metroman he would actually stop or at least slow down as it was just a show for them. So, when things got real with Titan, he just subconsciously tried the "failsafe" he had with Metroman, and only got out the real failsafe when it became serious.

Three things I love about each hero/villain's costumes: Titan/Tighten's collar has little points to it that create a little scarlet "V" right in the center. Metroman's "M" is monochrome (so the same V-shape doesn't really stand out) and plain, adding to the idea that he's going through the motions of being a superhero but isn't actually that into it. Megamind's costumes are overtly menacing, but his logo is stylized into a lighting bolt and rounded off - arguably the "friendliest" logo of the three.

Some of my favorite details in the movie: 1. Megamind's love for high-collars. It's not just on all of his villain outfits, it's also on his Evil PJs, and he even turn up the collar of his prison uniform to create a similar look. Both of his parents are also seen wearing these kind of high-collars (although not as exaggerated), so it's both a villain design trope that he likes and a part of his original homeplanet's culture (maybe one of the few aspects of it he actually knows about). Which is also part of the Superman parallels, as it's often established that Superman's heroic outfit is inspired by Kryptonian design elements. 2. After being expelled from the Lil' Gifted School, Tiny Megamind is smiling widely due to the satisfaction of finally getting back at his bullies and feeling like he found his destiny - but as Tiny Metro Man picks up the school and flies away, Megamind's expression turns sad. Even at this stage he has doubts about his villain role and on some level he regret losing the opportunity the Lil' Gifted School would have given him. Also, if you pause at the right time, you can kinda read what's printed on all the newspaper in the title sequence, even the tiny print. 3. "You were right, Roxanne, I never should have left". Metro Man usually addresses Roxanne as 'Roxy'. Megamind is the one who calls her Roxanne. So this + the closeup on his green eyes communicates the idea that it's not just Megamind saying this 'in-character' as Metro Man, he is also speaking as himself, saying that he shouldn't have given up a few scenes before. 4. In the prison-break scene, Megamind hiding in his cell to scare the warden seems as just a way to establish him as a goofy, fun-loving villain - but he's also testing and practicing for his escape plan, which *depends* on him hiding well enough so that his cell seems empty 5. The visual symbolism when Roxanne is running away from the restaurant in the rain. All of the trash Megamind cleaned up by dehydrating it pops back into existence, just like all of Megamind's villainous actions rise up to the surface and come back to haunt him. 6. The use of "Mr. Blue Sky" is clearly because Megamind is blue. They even play the line "Mr. Blue, you did it right " on Megamind disguised as Bernard reading a book with his own (real) face on it, but then the rest of the verse - which is about "Mr. Night", who is a kind of an antagonist or danger to Mr. Blue Sky, approaching - is played over Hal finally getting actually kinda good with his powers. Because Hal is actually the biggest danger Megamind is gonna face. The similarities and the close release dates between 'Megamind' and 'Despicable Me' are a bit strange, and maybe there's a story behind that, but I highly doubt it's because they're both based on that same script. I actually found a copy of one of the earlier drafts of Megamind (then titled 'Master Mind' and supposed to be a live-action comedy targeted at adults) online, and most of the similarities between it and Despicable Me (outside of the basic fact that they're both about villains) were LATER additions. Like, the Brainbots and Minion didn't exist back then, Master Mind's henchmen were three human goons dressed as Einstein, Da Vinci and Plato. (imsdb.com/scripts/Megamind.html you can judge for yourself here. The only part where I can KINDA say there's a similarity to Despicable Me is that Master Mind is inspired to villainy by a desire to please his late father. Much like Gru wants to impress his mother) (Fun Fact, the Mr. Miyagi reference in the final movie is a nod to this script, where Master Mind's persona as Hal's mentor was actually Pat Morita - being inspired by a Karate Kid poster in Hal's room) Really, if the two movies didn't happen to come out the exact same year I dunno if anyone would have compared them. Like, they're both about *villains*, but very different types of villains. Megamind is indisputably a Comic-Book style Supervillain and Despicable Me is more... James Bond villain I guess? Megamind is very fixated on the Villain-Hero relationship, but the world of the first Despicable Me seems to be totally Hero-Less. I actually only saw Despicable Me back in 2010, and saw Megamind much, much later. But although I still have found memories of the first Despicable Me movie, Megamind had a much stronger effect on me and a very special place in my heart. I just love Megamind as a character and how delightfully he embodies everything I love about the supervillain aesthetic.

@thickneckman67514 жыл бұрын
Megamind was such a good movie I remember as a kid being a captivated by the idea of a villain protagonist who actually comes out on top and defeats the hero (or seemingly defeats him). its a profound movie and speaks on multiple issues. In the first act we get a taste of nature v.s. nurture. Megamind, the underdog anti hero is raised in a prison by convicted felons, this is an issue for our protagonist because our first sense of right and wrong comes from those who raise us and obviously these criminals aren’t going to have strong moral fiber like the “hero” metro man’s parents. Megamind is then bullied by other children at school and his self esteem drops so low that he believes that “being bad is the one thing I’m good at”. It may not seem like it but I believe Megamind suffers from severe depression, behind his witty humor and seemingly confident attitude, Megamind’s tale is crushingly dark, he believes he is defined by his rivalry with metro man who constantly defeats and embarrasses him. Once he kills metro man (which causes him extreme guilt) he feels lost and without purpose, realizing that his rivalry and his hatred was the only thing that gave meaning to his life. He then creates a new nemesis who turns evil causing Megamind even more guilt, believing himself to be at heart only capable of evil. On top of this he is outcast and shunned by all of society only further reinforcing his idea that he is “the baddest boy of them all” no one in the movie is seen ever reaching out to Megamind nobody once gives him the love and support he desperately needs aside from his faithful minion of course, it reminds me of the quote by mark twain > “But who prays for Satan? Who in eighteen centuries, has had the common humanity to pray for the one sinner that needed it most, our one fellow and brother who most needed a friend yet had not a single one, the one sinner among us all who had the highest and clearest right to every Christian's daily and nightly prayers, for the plain and unassailable reason that his was the first and greatest need, he being among sinners the supremest?” He is feared by all and he has come to accept that fear is the only for of respect which he deserves. He is so despised that when he makes an attempt to connect with someone he feels the need to disguise himself so that they are not automatically repulsed by him. This belief is reaffirmed by the fact that as soon as Roxanne discovers his true identity she too abandons him. Megamind is stuck in what is referred to as a self fulfilling prophecy, his actions towards others impact other’s beliefs about him which impact their actions towards him which reinforce his beliefs about himself which influence his actions towards others and so on. Megamind is seen as evil in part because he is so firmly stuck in the belief that that’s all he will ever be. in fact after he is defeated by Hal (who represents the vile incel community, further speaking on modern day issues), he discoveres that his old nemesis, metro man still lives. Metro man tells Megamind that he needs to be the hero but megamind is so firmly stuck in the belief that he can never be anything more than a villain that he instead decides to imprison himself, only stepping up to face Hal when he realizes that the woman he loves is in danger (cliche I know but this movie gets a pass) this is all well and good except Megamind’s confidence is still so low that he feels he must disguise himself as metro man in order to save the day, believing that this is the only way he will have the support of the people and be able to intimidate Hal. To Megamind’s horror Hal realizes his true identity and Megamind is forced to fight Hal as himself, overcoming his fear Megamind defeats hal by embracing who he is telling Hal “you’re a villain all right, just not a super one.” After this to his surprise Megamind is accepted by the people but more importantly he has come to be accepted by himself, fully completing his redemption arc. “Megamind” is a dark tale of emptiness, defeat, rejection, and redemption. Megamind teaches us that we are not defined by what others think of us and we always have a choice to be better no matter how dark things may seem. TL;DR: Megamind is a profound film about a man (or alien) who is severely depressed which drives him to do unspeakable things but he overcomes this in the end and redeems himself in the eyes of society, showing us that we are not defined by what others think of us and we always have a choice to be better. Btw this isn’t even a copypasta I spent like an hour typing it out I might even post it on r/copypasta for like 3 upvotes

Something interesting I found is that in the start of the movie when metroman is doing the speech for the City he questions " who I'd be without you? " and his expressions says that he is questioning himself about what all his life has been, I find it an interesting foreshadowing.
@Avatarbee4 жыл бұрын
I love how Megamind lured Metroman away from everyone else and into an abandoned building which is isolated from the rest of the city before using his destructive super weapon. That minimised property damage and made sure that no innocents got hurt. Foreshadowing that in his heart he doesn't actually want to hurt civilians?

13:11 Yes, Megamind did cost more than Despicable Me 1, but the quality of the animation and attention to detail was one of the best at that time. Megamind still looks beautiful to this day, and Minion is one of the most impressive animated movie characters when it comes to beautiful animations. The animation/movement of Minion's head is always independent from his body, and the animation in general is on par with some of the most expensive animated movies from that era.

In one way, being second in overall popularity to its counterpart Despicable Me was a good thing for this movie, so that those who did enjoy it wouldn't have to deal with the fear that over popularity would encourage cash-grab sequels that don't live up to the original, a fear many people have with their favorite non-series titles. The flip-side is that those who would want a sequel won't get one, but at least we are all still left with an excellent movie that stands on its own perfectly fine.
@izzieb.29263 жыл бұрын
It was probably originally supposed to become a franchise. The way it ended was the perfect setup for a potential sequel. Not sure why a lot of people don't like this one, it's amongst Dreamwork's bests. From animation quality, a stellar cast, topping off with a really well put together narrative that both homages and satirizes the superhero/comic book tropes and cliches in a really fresh way. Never thought until seeing this that a giant blue headed alien/supervillain could be so complex and interesting. Definitely not perfect, but I'd highly recommend it to those who haven't seen it. Severely underappreciated. Pretty much Dreamwork's response to the Incredibles, but manages to have an identity of it's own.

Not to mention the fact that Megamind pays a lot of homage to classic superhero archetypes particularly superman as this video was alluding to which I'm sure a lot of older people respected and admired. Despicable Me was just an average family comedy with a lot of slapstick humor. Not saying it wasn't that good, but it wasn't that great either. Just average. Honestly, I felt this movie was a lot better, and I honestly would've loved to have seen at least another sequel, or an animated series based on Megamind after he becomes a superhero for Metro City. Yes, I know there's that animated short that they released called "Button of Doom", but honestly I never really cared too much for it. Yeah, it serves as a great metaphor for the character to face who he used to be to move and accept who he is now. And, I did love the message about how if he going to be a superhero, he needs to do it as himself vs trying to be Metro Man. However, from a narrative perspective, "Button of Doom" isn't that great of a follow up when you think about it's flaws on a narrative perspective.
@mrcritical67515 жыл бұрын
Love both films but Megamind is better, mainly because it has way more depth especially with Hal and how it slowly peels back the layers of his mental issues at first he’s just kinda a creepy nerdy guy but then as the film goes along you really see how far down the rabbit hole the guy is and how insane he is

For me personally, it's like an Anz vs A bug's Life with the two movies. As a child I loved A Bug's Life. But didn't really like Antz. Now as an adult I really like Antz better. I personally feel like as an adult now Megamind is a much better movie, because of the more mature and deeper themes. If I was a kid now, I'd have enjoyed Dispicable Me much more. It's a much lighter movie.

Steven Escareno or what about an animated series about his battles with Metro Man and kidnappings of Roxanne previous to the events in the movie? Megamind just has so much untapped potential that I would love to see in use!
@ravnemagne95982 ай бұрын
Something I have only realised 14 years after the movie came out, and that I haven't heard anyone mention since. When Megamind, disguised as Metroman, cuts the bus in half to save Roxanne with his fist, that wasn't just a "it's a movie" moment, the hand he used was actually a saw underneath the disguise. I always just thought the saw was to convey him bringing weapons
@alyssaherrera44424 жыл бұрын
That part where Titain throws the bus at Roxanne and she ducks before she's saved stands out to me personally. It shows that, while she plays the damsel in distress in Megamind and Metroman's game, that isn't how the animaters wanted her actual character to be. In any other movie, she would have fallen to the ground and curled up in a ball before the bus was lasered in half. That would make her look more helpless and insure she would have to dramatically look up from where she's laying on the ground to look at her hero. But instead they had her run as long as she could and when she realized she couldn't run she ducked. She knelt to the ground on one knee and covered her head. That way when "Metroman" had his big reveal, she could stand up and face him at eye level. I just liked that detail.
@Avetho3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, she was able to face him as a peer in a way. She's the superheroine of the news networks meanwhile both Metroman at the start and Megamind at the end were superheroes of justice and public order. That makes them peers who stand on even ground with mutual respect and admiration :)

Also I'd like to point out how cool and telling megamind and metroman's names are. Megamind was raised to be evil and self-centered thus he named himself after the aspect of himself he values most. Metroman felt as if he only existed to serve and be an extention of the city he called home. So that's how he came up with his name. Hell he doesn't even get an alter ego until after he "dies" he's just Metroman 24/7.
