My sister-in-law had breast cancer for 10 years from the age of 30 to 40. She is the one that took on the insurance companies and legislators to change the laws concerning reconstruction surgery due to disease, that now insurance must pay for reconstruction as it is not an 'elective' surgery. She died 2 weeks after her 40th birthday but left a great legacy for her children and all that need reconstructive surgeries due to disease. Brenda Suddeth was a warrior.

The moment I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer 10 years ago, my mom, who had multiple mylonma, told me to get a notebook and start getting and keeping records on every doctors appointment, test and procedure. I did just that and whenever I went to another new doctor and they had questions but none of my most recent tests result, I’d pull out my notebook for them to see just what I had already been through.

I’m waiting on an appointment with a breast specialist. I’ve had so many odd symptoms over the last year and a half but didn’t even think cancer until I found a lump. I haven’t been diagnosed yet because my mammogram and ultrasound came back suspicious and the biopsy came back negative. It’s on my left side and my left side has been having all kinds of weird symptoms, hair loss, uneven weight gain, dry cracked heel but only on my left foot, more injuries on my left side, etc. I remember thinking when I found the lump “it’s always my left side.” It’s still a month before my breast specialist appointment and I’m so stressed about it. I hope it really is nothing, but as time goes on I’m noticing more things that are off and getting more worried. Thanks for sharing your story.

Not at all accurate. I live in the U.S. and had breast cancer and my husband's health insurance (we get it through his employer) covered everything: 5.5 months of chemo, 1 year of immunotherapy, bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction. I only paid co-pays of $25 for doctor visits every 3 weeks.

I live in the US, was diagnosed nearly 5 years ago with MBC. My Doctor immediately got me in emergency insurance, I then qualified for State Medicade, just ONE of my meds are over $17,000 a month!!!! No one can afford that! It's really sad.

Your experience really caught my attention. I have had a sore left breast, even during my mammogram this past February. Since then, I've had an ultrasound and they cannot give me an answer. I'm persevering.

I was to see a new doctor last Thuesday. My doc has vacation now. I have had a big wound on my left breast for 3 months. Since 5/5 and today is 1/8. It is inflamed. My doc has put me on 2 boxes of penicillin. Last Thuesday the new doctor said it might be canser. Sent m to the hospital for mammogram and ultrasound. The radiologist wait he could not see anything on any of these. But I think you need a MR😂I scan. I will make sure you’ll see a surgeon. Today I had an appointment with the breast surgeon. He did not want to listen to me. Not regarding what the radiologist said 1 week prior, not to other things I felt like telling him about. For him to better know where I’m coming from. I am chronically ill. The surgeon wants me to have a close look at my wound. And come back next Thuesday. Can this be IBC? I wonder. But I did not ask anything. Doctors do not like to be told anything. Now I will wait one more week. But I know I must be my own advocate. But that is hard to do without looking as not to be rude, obnoxious, or a besserwisser. I simply don’t know what to do!!!😢 Something is totally wrong! My breast hurts!

Like Mother like daughter. My Mom had uterine cancer at age 72 and sadly died. Then 4 years later I was diagnosed with same stage and grade of uterine cancer at age 52 yrs. Thankfully I survived. We are never far from our genetic pool. I too have chemo induced neuropathy.

I, too, had lobular cancer in left breast. It manifested with lump. Had mammogram and mri. No cancer showed up. I had intense itching inside. My doc advised I use lotion … said it could be dryness and had no relationship to cancer. Long story short I requested biopsy the following year since the itching wouldn’t go away. Showed up I had 5 spots with cancer in my left breast. I opted for mastectomy left and preventive mastectomy in right. Turns out right has in situ cancer waiting to happen. I’m grateful I chose chemo, radiation and then double mastectomy without reconstruction since I was in my sixties. It’s 12 years later … no regrets other than I should have insisted on biopsy earlier, but I didn’t know lobular is a sneaky cancer since it doesn’t always show in mammograms. Breast cancer never came back, I have some neuropathy, but I don’t really miss my breasts. Thanks for your informative video.

As Megan says "ask questions rather than just agreeing and feeling you need to just go along with what they suggest quickly. I also have lobular. Was interested to hear about mouth sores as I've only had a full mastectomy surgery and am waiting to see if oncology want to start chemo or radiation next. Bless her for recognising and giving a shout out to all those professionals that helped her. I'm dreading the rest of my journey. You do get told stuff they gloss over pretty fast. I had an MRI with contrast dye and an hour later I felt dreadful and had sickness for 2 days later..Liked how she heard things but some of these things don't register at the time until they make sense later. That's why it's better to take someone else who takes good notes and discusses stuff with you after. 33 rounds of radiation. I hate how some professionals are so dismissive. I once heard someone say to my mum when she was in pain (late stage 4) "well what do you expect. It's not a walk in the park". I was blown away. No effort to offer to suggest improving the pain. I appreciate her talking openly. It is hard to speak up at the moment and you can worry about saying the wrong thing and making them angry. That's the worst thing.... It's a different story with the same type for everyone. We all get diff treatment and symptoms. Thank you Megan for sharing this xx

Thank you for sharing your story. My Mom went through her breast cancer journey when i was growing up. I was 12 and she was single. She refused chemo but did radiation and had the lump removed. One day it was a new radiologist and she got burned so badly. Her entire chest remained very badly discolored. After 25 yrs of being in remission she had it again. It had hold of her and eventually took her. 10 yrs before i lost my Dad to lung. After my Mom my Aunt who had breast and my Great Grandma ovarian. I go for a very long over due mammogram this Thursday. I has cysts removed from my right breast 15yrs ago that were fine. Im pushed to go now because my breast pains me only in certain areas. Again right breast , my lymph nodes are tender too. Im a little concerned. My breast arecvery dense from breastfeeding 4 children so its impossible to look for a lump. Thank you again. My sister started losing her hair, it became dry and brittle. She developed this weird cystic acne on her jawline that nothing would help. We kept thinking it was her fertility treatment. I've never gone through this, but I did have melanoma. I had a few complications after surgery, and one was a seroma where lymph nodes were taken. I swear, this was an absolute nightmare that seemed like it was never going to end. I'll keep this short instead of sharing details, but I constantly had to have that thing drained. Then, my general surgeon (I also had a plastic surgeon) put a drain in swearing THIS was going to be the fix. He told me repeatedly that he "only took 1 or 2 lymph nodes. I never get this reaction from patients." The drain didn't work, and then came the infection. I almost ended up in the hospital. I felt exactly what she was talking about around the 22 minute mark. I also wanted to add that I was numb around the groin area and my inner thigh until probably this year. My surgery had been in February 2014, and it's now July 2023. Hopefully in time, the numbness will go away for her as well.

I do have an area of thickening at the very base of my breast that I’m pretty sure doesn’t show up in the mammogram. I will make sure to talk to the technician and ask how to get that area checked. I found a thickened area in the same place with an ultrasound. Was 3cm and irregular shaped. Biopsy proved mine to be a solid cancer. I hope you get better news.

Some cancers do not show as lumps. Some are thickening of the skin and an orange peel look. Peau de orange. Please get checked out. We have ultrasound, ,mammograms and even breast MRI, as well as multiple ways to biopsy anything suspicious.

You’re so precious. Can I suggest a couple of things from experience? I have a husband, but I couldn’t have him with me during Covid. So I recorded the verbal appointments. I later deleted them because they were triggering. Also, if you buy an outfit with a shirt that can be buttoned up in the front and contains no metal, and don’t wear a bra, you can bypass the dressing down. It got me in and out faster. I’m sorry you went through all that. Thank you for sharing. ❤

@@ThePatientStory No problem. About the shirt hack, I meant to add a couple points: 1. If your shirt is self-consciously revealing without a bra, wear a jacket over it. It still works. 2. Let the nurse know when you check in. They’re just as eager to get you in and out fast as you are. As long as you can easily slip off the shirt, they won’t make you gown up. In my opinion, they certainly should have done more for you. You had a family history of cancer and dense breasts. I also had both of these conditions too. I was also diagnosed with breast cancer. I think they were more proactive in my case. It's sad the medical field seems biased against people of color. I seemed to be denial about my lump. I thought it would just go away. It was until it started to really hurt, did I call. I was stupid!

My symptoms where odd also. My heart was telling me what was wrong but I was swimming in a deep river of denial. The only reason I said stop and get a mammogram now was because my sister got diagnosed with breast cancer unfortunately. Sincerely I would have continued to put that off for years. Beyond my sister and her diagnosis I was catching flu/colds way more than normal. I did have a nipple that was sinking into my breast: silly me I thought that was just age related. I too gained weight just before my diagnosis. My hair was thinning but once again I thought it was my thyroid disease that I have had for years. I was diagnosed with cancer in my breast milk ducts which is way off for a woman who breast fed 4 children and was at that time way past my menopause. They now say it is an environmental cause…who knows why I got cancer without any Brocka gene or Her2 gene or family history beyond my sister who had just got diagnosed. It is all very confusing to me for sure.

My friend got breats cancer at 39 too and she got free egg freezing (we live in europe) but she only got 8 eggs. In the end she didn’t end up needing chemo, just surgery. It’s very frustrating that you didn’t have the chance. Idk maybe it’s a bit of a comfort that eggs are very fragile and not many survive the thaw and even if they do there’s no guarantee they’d be useful. So it’s not necessary it would have made any difference even if you did freeze them. I unexpectedly went into early menopause at 33 and I’m beating myself up that I didn’t think about egg freezing when I was younger, but I didn’t even know something like this happening was possible. I feel like living in a nightmare every day, but I’ve already made my peace that I’ll need donated eggs if I ever find a partner.

You are so right we know our bodies best. 6 months before I was diagnosed with cancer, I had a pimple like rash , pain and swelling on my breast. My doctor gave me cream for itch and said she did not feel anything. Found cancer in that area of my breast 6 month later on routine mammogram. All the doctors I saw afterwards tell me it was not related but I just do not buy this was coincidence

No one should go through the fear of not being able to afford treatment. Thank goodness I live in Australia. Of course our universal health care pays for treatment. I still pay for my complementary/natural treatment . Please everyone become advocates for universal healthcare.

I just got back from general surgery consult. I am on here watching cancer videos because I am nervous I may have breast cancer or lymphoma. I am being referred for a mammogram. The specialist did a thorough physical and felt for swollen lymph nodes. I had a boil like skin issue 2 months ago. The "boil" did drain and I have been keeping it quiet and calm by doing warm compresses every day and keeping a bandaid over it. The Dr. I saw did not say much. Mentioned concerns of breast cancer or lymphoma in conversation but did not say for sure. She it said that "on visual assessment it does not appear I have cancer" but wants the imaging done and to then schedule surgery to drain and get a closer assessment of the "boil." I am concerned. Is it one of these cancers? I never thought these types of cancers could cause skin boils or issues? I am just scared right now. I have ME/CFS and I have crushing fatigue and flu like symptoms regularly.....and bone and muscle pain.....and fevers at times....and I can have appetite and digestive issues too. All these can be cancer symptoms too. Yes .....I am scared right now. 🙏🙏🙏😬

Hi… Mine was lobular, single mastectomy, mostly near invisible tumours again not picked up with mammogram, I’m 60 .. So every 2 years .. 1. X 2.5 cm, I x 2cm, reconstruction at the time so I was told it was easy.. ( for whom I wonder), then foums out it had breached the margin of my whole breast and had grown into my side. Sin3 weeks after the first surgery, second surgery, removed all the fat margins from under my arm… There were 3 more tumours undetectable to the eye at a cellar level, 2. X 2.5 cm, and 7 cm.. ( that is 3 inches). So this was stage 3a cancer. So then also unplanned 25 rounds of radiation ( every weekday for 5 weeks) (did it in my lunch hour from work ) which was so bad the skin off my breast area was falling off in the shower and landing on my foot, my skin split and I was in so much pain that I just wanted to go the sleep and not wake up.. but I couldn’t sleep and I was on all types of pain killers… They wanted to remove my skin and my implant and do a skin graft from my back.( very fair skin live in Australia, English heritage). 2 1/2 month’s later I got a very bad infection, and ended up back in hospital as an emergency for a week, 28 IV bags of penicillin later they removed 450 ml of fluid from the side of my breast under my arm. I am home and have since had a further 5 needle guided aspirations with it all it’s about 2 lites of fluid and it’s still happening…this is nearly month 9 from the start.. I have worked nearly all the time as I also live alone..( good friends and family for support).. The good things, good health insurance, I’m going to get over it, I still have a breast as I had skin and nipple sparing, but I have burn scars which I will always have. I am starting walking again to build myself up! I have been able to work from home, so the office here, and I can get a nap at lunch time as I’m exhausted.. Bad stuff is I have been unwell for 7 years in various degrees, and was being treated for autoimmune disease ( which I do have); however the cancer was driving it. I was told I had psychosomatic symptoms from stress when I had stage 3 breast cancer. It still cost me $15,000 out of pocket at least as a lot of things are not covered by my private health insurance or Medicare ( govt based paid for as a percentage of my salary) I will have to take adjuvant therapy for 10: years, and you are never clear of it. Im black biracial and ive been dealing with these same symptoms for years finally at 33 found a dr who would check ultra aound. Then urgent mammogram . Then emergency ultrasound again😅😅 like 10 mins later. In a week i have a biopsy ill be stunned if its not cancer im not a hypochondriac but im just sure

You are telling my story.. the weight gain is why I got concerned and I was exhausted but the drs thought I was crazy then the breast biopsies came back and I was diagnosed with ductal cancer estrogen and and progesterone positive 2-3 grade my symptoms were exactly like yours weight gain exhaustion and Ann’s my boobs got bigger than they were in menopause
