It's an "islander thing". I lived on Grand Manan Island" and, though they are friendly at first and want to make you welcome, they do retreat and they are reclusive. But that's why they live on an island and not the mainland ... at least that's what i found .... but, though it hurt me at first, i learned to understand it and now i do not mind it. I myself love the island and go back as iften as i can .... for a reclusive retreat. My husband was a Grand Mananer and is now burief there ... and someday i will be placed beside him.

I moved to Prince Edward island to attend college but mostly because of Anne. Biggest mistake of my life! Trust me there are no kindred spirits on PEI in 2021. The people get jealous if you laugh and take your smile from you. They dont like outsiders and they dont welcome you. It's sad and lonely living on PEI. In a way I wish I never watched Anne of green gables.

Among Montgomery's many PEI characters in her books, there were many non-kindred spirits, if you recall, mostly among the "insiders" themselves. That's why it was so special to the kindred spirits to find each other. The same is probably true of many communities of all kinds, at least in my experience. Maybe you'll find and make friends among your fellow outsiders, and/or gradually win over the insiders, as Anne often did. 😊 I've sometimes been able to do it in new work environments where some people were cold and suspicious at first until they got to know me over several months. If not, one can usually transfer universities or learn online. No need for "the depths of despair"! ☺️
