@@blobfish5730 It probably wasn't the intention of the writers at the time, but it's been argued that's what he's most like since he's technically the youngest Doctor. Consider some of his behavior: he loves bragging about his toys, lecturing others to show off how smart he is, sulks when he's told what to do, sneaks off to do what he knows he's not supposed to, and treats his younger companions as equals, which he doesn't really do with Ian and Barbara. In some ways, he's like a snobby little teen's idea of what a big important scientist acts like. And consider this line from Time Crash: "DOCTOR (10): You know, I love being you. Back when I first started at the very beginning, I was always trying to be old and grumpy and important, like you do when you're young"

To clarify, for those not in the know. All Time Lords are from Gallifrey, but not all Gallifreyans are Time Lords. In order to become a Time Lord, you need to go through the academy where, upon completion of whatever training and trials they put them through, they are given a cycle of 12 regenerations. This cap was thought to be genetic, ie all Gallifreyans had the same thing, until it was established in The Five Doctors that extra regenerations could be granted, as it was the reward promised to the Master to help the various Doctors make it through the Death Zone. I also wont deny that, even though i was 41 when I first saw this, I became as giddy as a school boy when I realized they'd given him a whole new cycle, as it would mean the show could continue for another few decades. Also cannot deny being nearly broken by Amy's last words to him.

I still love Capaldi’s entrance. First time viewing you’re in Clara’s shoes. Who is this guy? Why is he acting so weird? Next time around you realize he’s gauging Clara’s reaction to see how he’s changed. Then he notices the new kidneys because those are the first to go with old age. Then he has to remember how to fly the TARDIS because he hasn’t had to for centuries. No wonder he has trouble settling into becoming the Doctor again, wondering whether “The Doctor” is a good man. He’s not always, can’t always be. But in those first moments he’s basically acting Matt Smith wondering what his new face looks like, wondering why his best friend looks at him like that.

Originally the episode was going to end with 11's regeneration on the church and then the feet walking up the stairs would pan out to Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor. However, it was found that Karen Gillan was in London filming Guardians of the Galaxy, so they asked her if she would like a walk on part during the episode. She said yes and the rest is history! Both Karen an Matt were bald during the filming, Karen for her role as Nebula and Matt for a new play he was rehearsing, so they both wore wigs. The two of them did talk about doing a prank before filming by swapping wigs for the first take but never did so!

Moffat didn't expect Matt to want to leave at this time so Time of the Doctor was a rush job really to tie up all the loose ends. I didn't think so at the time but when I watched it a few weeks back I realised that he did actually manage to cover all the points pretty well. It's still not a favourite but it has improved in my favours.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I think Moffat had a rough idea/plan on how Matt's Doctor would leave. Because of the overarching arc of the Silence and the crack. Plus the at the end of series 6 were Dorian says "On the fields of Trenzalore, at the fall of the eleventh, when no living creature can speak falsely or fail to answer. A Question will be asked, a question that must never, ever be answered. Doctor Who?" All of it can true in this episode. So I believe he did have a rough plan because so much needed to be connected together to make sense. Or could have fallen into place over time. It might have been in an interview somewhere with Moffat talking about his era. Might be wrong but defiantly heard it somewhere. Either way some pretty good writing and creativity to put it all together.

I like Time of the Doctor for putting the Doctor in a situation he can’t leave, for he has to protect the citizens of Christmas, plus the time locked event of his death of Trenzalore. So this is the Doctor accepting mortality and going out with a bang, doing the right thing. He takes a stand and where he stands is where he falls. And Moffat does it the most cruel way in a sense. He lets the Doctor live to death. Like the weeping angels (used to) do. He takes away Matts greatest strength, his youth and energy, and confronts us with hard reality of TIME, of aging. It robs us of the fantasy escapism and is why it saddens me so. Time is something the Doctor never really does, he never stays too long, if he gets bored he leaves or finds aliens to fight. He had to stay now. The Doctor didn’t like it, but when he had to, he did the right thing. In the end, as a real-life equivalent, the Doctor becomes the cooky old inventor at the end of the street, where the kids go to get their toys fixed, the mysterious man you call when there’s monsters in the woods. And in the end he’s an old man who lies, saved by his companions.

Gethin Jones that is true but he also thought Matt Smith would stay one more series for these things to have some breathing room. It was pretty much last minute, around filming Day of the Doctor, that he decided to leave after the Christmas special.

And that is how I wound up a laughing, sobbing, snotty mess on Christmas Day, 2013. *shakes fist* Curse you, Moffat! (Just kidding) Seriously, this episode is an absolute emotional roller coaster and while plot-wise it isn't my favorite, it's still a solid send-off for my favorite Doctor. I knew going in that this was going to be his final episode, and I thought I was prepared for an emotional goodbye, but I was not expecting the gut punch that was Amy's "Raggedy Man, goodnight." Right in the feels. Anyway, on to my second-favorite Doctor of all time! I'm fairly certain Megan will like him (may take a few episodes, we'll see).

My headcanon is simple: there was NEVER a limit for the Doctor, and the Timelords “gave” him new regenerations to hide the lie they had been perpetuating.

Yeah, I have the same headcanon. but in season 9 when 12 is back on Gallifrey Rassilon asks him "how many regenerations did we grant you?". Makes me think that even though Rassilon is one of the founding time lords he isnt aware of the timeless child. Either that, or he said it just as a threat.

Ok.. A bit of trivia. The reason for the quick regeneration. Originally Clara arrived in the TARDIS and the figure coming up the stairs was Capaldi. Moffat decided he didnt want Matt Smith going out as a shouty old man so the additional scene was written in and filmed. Karen Gillan was in London having just finished filming on Guardians of The Galaxy. She had to shave her head for her role as Nebula. Matt Smith had his head shaved for a movie he had filmed before this was shot. So in that final bit both Matt and Karen were wearing wigs!

**looking at the title** Well, here we go :'( Eleven isn't my favourite doctor, but I will admit that I love and enjoy his era, so his regeneration scene still makes me cry a bit. It really doesn't help with other reaction who also crying, just to make it much sadder to me. *Discussion bit about The Timeless Children (SPOILER! To anyone who haven't get there. Just skip this part)* So there're a lot of confusion about Eleven's big regeneration with The Timeless Child explanation. I've seen many theories about how it could happen. My personal theory is that when The Doctor was forced turning to child, they also forcing their biology body to an Gallifreyan/Time Lord body. They probably used a Chamaleon Arch (maybe a prototype/early version before Human Nature/Family of Blood) to them and grant 12 regeneration to First Doctor. Of course, the question is is the current regenation is limited or unlimited? I suppose only time will tell. I'm quite exciting to see Megan's opinion with Twelve. He's my second favourite Doctor after Ten & (suprisingly) Thirteen. Some of his episodes is really, really good so I cannot wait to see the reactios :D

11 is my doctor, so this episode always breaks me, I can’t watch it without balling like a baby, even before the regeneration starts. As much as l eventually like Capaldi, I stopped watching after this. It took me a while to start watching again and I haven’t been as avid of a fan as I was before this.

I wouldn't be surprised if all time lords were capable of regenerating endlessly still (the doctor too) and the limit was something put in their head. My headcanon here says that they didn't give the doctor a whole new regeneration cycle, they just removed the psychological block. this kind of also makes sense from a writing perspective if they want to stick other doctors that the doctor doesn't know about in the classic series, so long as the doctor doesn't know about them they don't have to count

The latest seasons notwithstanding... When this happened I reasoned it this way: The Doctor had no regenerations left, and then he received energy from Gallifrey, giving him a new cycle, but this time an unlimited/unknown number. We've seen how regeneration energy can be given to others, and they gave him a massive amount... so much that the excess energy he was swatting Dalek's out of the sky, destroyed the Dalek mothership and hit the surrounding countryside like a hurricane. If the population of Gallifrey gave them just one regeneration each, that's billions of regenerations. They probably didn't do that much, but in the scope of the series he has an unlimited number of regenerations. Also people keep saying how fast this regeneration was.... this was one of the slowest in the history of Doctor Who... started on the clock tower and ended with Capaldi. The final transition was a flash, but it just took a while for the teapot to boil, so to speak. Big hugs to Megan... such a journey to get to this point. There are elements of each and every Doctor that make them your favorite. Looking forward for you fo fall in love with Capaldi's Doctor all over again :)

Well I do respect the sentiment you are going for, but other Doctors were alone too during regeneration. The 2nd Doctor regenerated after having his friends taken away, the 6th Doctor regenerated and was instantly taken prisoner and was without Mel for a day or two, the 7th Doctor regenerated in a hospital morgue after being shot, and the 12th Doctor regenerated alone on the TARDIS after Bill and Nardole said their goodbyes.

with timeless children my 2 ideas is like what you think. My other thought is that regeneration is more like a gas can capped off at 12 and the timelords here just increased the cap to 24.

Fun fact, both Matt & Karen were wearing wigs because they had shaved their heads (as we already saw with Matt & Karen because she was/had been filming Guardians).
