This is a great overview of the possibilities and variety of fun you can have with art journaling. I grew up like many people thinking that because I couldn’t draw things out of my mind I was not an “artist”. I was very creative with fiber and fabrics but stayed away from paints, etc. Then in my later years I was introduced to art journaling and it has opened a whole new world of creativity and enjoyment! And thanks to the wonderful KZbin artists who share so generously I have learned so much and am amazed at what I can do and how much joy it gives me. And at age 81 I can say for sure “it is never too late”! One note of advice for those just starting: don’t start with mixed media journals that have the metal spirals in them like I did when I didn’t know any better. I found them very frustrating when doing an open two page spread.

Definitely a broad term “art journaling.” So many ways to create under that umbrella which makes it amazing! I love love mixed media collage the most!

I started bullet journaling years ago. This past Christmas I decided to start art journaling. I bought some stickers and just worked them into my writing journal. I then started collecting old books and magazine to cut pictures out of. I also started collecting trade journals from my workplace and other unloved paper destined for the trash. I now have made three junk journals I bound and decorated on my own. I gave two as gifts already. I am now experimenting with drawing using a glass dip pen and bottled inks. I have really taken to this craft, it has absolutely enriched my life and brought me a lot of joy. I love that my creations can so easily become gifts (i love to randomly give little gifts, but i will probably forget your birthday).

Oh my gosh Meg I just found you and you have so inspired me! I am an artist, with a studio, but the studio is for everyone else...it's a business where I conduct paint nights, art parties and kids classes. I do everything for my studio for the benefit of others, which I love, but journaling is something that has been tugging at my soul for YEARS. I have so many empty, sad journals just hoping to be used to create daily art. This has really got me in the mood to start. I need to do this. Going to watch all your videos. LOVE.

I'm a long form person who likes to learn new things via videos. Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, etc., are so short that, to me, they are just ads, & I barely look at them anymore. Not that there's anything wrong with earning a living but, like so many things, those platforms seem to have gone too far. This was a great overview & inspiration to try art journaling. I would like to see you do a start to finish page, one that isn't all sped up like those others I mentioned. I especially liked the work you did in the Dina Wakely kraft journal, although they were all so FAB, & I look forward to seeing more!

This is amazing! Thank you for sharing your journals - they are gorgeous and inspirational. I love making junk journals, but have trouble using my entire page. Especially if it's a heavily illustrated book page. I've been handling them as precious objects instead of an opportunity to play. Which is hilarious in journals that are constructed of junk mail, book pages and discarded packaging. So thank you again! Now I want to go make a bunch of stamps and stencils for my junk journals.

And I’ve really been getting into it and watching so many videos but you did such a great job in identifying the various types of art journaling. You've helped me so much! First of all, your journals are stunning. I'm so inspired by all of your book designs and pages. TYSM for sharing! I'd love to see more... maybe a flip through video for each one?? But you've helped me bc I've been making journals and swapping back and forth with a friend, and just now realized that she's a classic junk journaler using antique ephemera, her sewing machine, buttons, etc, while I'm a true art journaler using paints, mixed media collage from the outdoors, incorporating would-garbage papers, and my writing. It's so obvious which pages are hers and which are mine. Hers are assembled so perfectly and beautifully, usually sepia or black and white with perfect edges and finishings. While mine are paint covered, bright, often messy. Though we're rubbing off on each other. I'm finishing my work, and learning to take care in my edges and framing. While she's starting to incorporate colors, and is adding in words.

Thank you. I'm not so sure I buy the "there are no rules" statement many teachers espouse. I know this is a beginner video, but there ARE artistic principles that make art-making more satisfying, like the rule of three, incorporating texture, or a focal point for interest. This, to me, is where teachers lose me, because principles are treated like taboos or restrictions, and no one goes there. When I combine them with play and intuition, I find them to be universal shortcuts.
@Jalleur143254 ай бұрын
Yes, in terms of creating something that is nice to look at I'd agree. If the aim is just to have a personal record and the appearance is irrelevant, then the no rules idea is fine...I personally do like to have something that looks decent!
@wandamishmash4 ай бұрын
I think there’s a difference between rules and guidance. Rules are about a definitive right/wrong good/bad approach to art, whereas guidances are tools or structures that the artist can choose use for their advantage or decide to go against it depending on their intention or mood. The rule of threes or focal point or color theory etc are for me guidances not rules.
