Simon missed several awesome Russian facts. After Peter the great modernized russia, he spent years living in Europe travelling and working blue collar jobs, with nobody in Europe or Russia knowing any better. Catherine the great wasnt necessarily a Romanov... One of the greatest Russian leaders married into the Romanov family. One of the Romanovs just left the throne, and disappeared, with rumors of having lived in a monastery in another country. I don't know why Simon says the title changed. The leader of the empire was always called the Tsar. Maybe the official title changed, but down to Nick 2, he was called the Tsar.

Thank you for this Simon! This a great video, considering current events. I have been trying to (quickly) learn more about Russian and Ukrainian historically significant and meaningful events, as I have recently been discovering my family's Ukranian heritage. The history, of both of these countries, are closely tied together, so it is hard to discuss one country without discussing the other. On top of that, the boundaries of the area in Ukraine that my ancestors were from, have changed so many times since 1900. I would enjoy a video from you, about the history of Ukraine that includes how the borders have changed over the centuries, and the impact that Ukraine has had to the world due to it's history, culture, and exports. I always enjoy watching and listening to your various channels- thanks again, Simon!

The reason the guards at Ipatiev used their gun butts and bayonettes is because of those jewels they had sewn into their clothes. The guards had been instructed to shoot in the hearts, with a bullet in the head afterwards to make sure. But those diamonds essentially acted like a bulletproof vest. Given the intense stress and excitement of the moment, the guards panicked and began physically attacking the tsar and his family.

I think English-speakers misunderstand the "the Terrible" moniker. In Russian, the word translates roughly to terrible but it doesn't mean the same thing as awful or bad. It's similar to the word "fearsome" and carries a similar connotation. This video also sort of brushes over both the Mongol Yoke and Time of Troubles period which carry great significance to the psyche of Russians. Both represented a time when Russia was subservient to foreign powers; from the East and from the West. And their struggles during these times and the opposition to these foreign powers is what fueled their expansionism which carried on to their Imperial period, Soviet period and influences their mentality today.

All the Romanov children had very rich personalities, and they are each an exciting story in themselves. Anastasia was a wild one. She was so mischievous that some people called her "evil" and even "a terrorist". She was very much a tomboy. She never cried, and didn't even like massages. She was also good at acting, miming and doing tricks with her dogs, which would often amuse the guards during their captivity. Yurovsky, who ended up personally murdering Nicholas, Anastasia and 3 of the other children, liked her. He even liked Nicholas a bit, actually. (This is from his own memoirs). Very sad that it ended like it did.

I enjoy Simon's presentation, but I would have preferred this one to be a bit more nuanced for such a complicated subject. For one thing, Nicholas' reign was not entirely negative. During this time there was quite a bit of technical innovations and the beginning of a rising middle class. After the 1905 revolution Russia experienced freedom of the press and workers' rights to unionize. The Russians were a whole lot freer than they were after the events of 1917. Had it not been for WWI, Russia would have probably developed into a mature constitutional monarchy.

When they finally caught and arrested him, the Secret Service agents found a lot more than counterfeit money. Together with the FBI he was charged with a whole litany of crimes (he wasn't even prosecuted for most of them).
