The biggest reveal of the whole show and one of the greatest moments in sci-fi history. This moment had been prepared for since the pilot, and small hints have been dropped all the time. And in the Special Edition of The Gathering, Kosh even greets Sinclair as “Entil'Zha Valen”, which of course has no meaning at that point and is immediately forgotten.
@zarabada6125 Жыл бұрын
Not quite "prepared for since the pilot." A lot of this episode was adapted to take account of Michael O'Hare's departure on medical grounds. JMS managed to tie everything together masterfully but this was far from the original plan in the pilot. Even the "Special edition," easter egg you mentioned was added retroactively after this episode had been produced.
@michaelbowen2343 Жыл бұрын
Right? I still remember seeing this as a kid and remember just how big of a deal it was. Kosh finally leaving his encounter suit was also HUGE.
@SuperZero42 Жыл бұрын
@@zarabada6125 this is... Partially accurate. The Original Plan- which involved ending B5 after 3 years, then replacing it with a show called Babylon Prime, which is where B4 would have come in- was only in effect for the pilot. In between that and writing the first season, the OP was overwritten by something closer to what we got. Among other things, it meant that Valenclair was meant to happen from Midnight on the Firing Line on, and that would mean Sinclair would have to depart shortly into Season 2. That plan was to have him in the first 3 eps of S2 in a story that would've involved revelations about Santiago's assassination, and Sinclair either being branded a traitor, or simply quitting EF because of it. Either way he'd have ended up on Minbar. It was, however, his psychiatric problems which caused him to bow out early, necessitating a story change for the early bits of S2.
@zarabada6125 Жыл бұрын
@@SuperZero42Just curious. Was that sequence of events revealed while JMS was hiding O'Hare's condition? "It was always the plan for him to leave around there." Or is it something that was revealed after O'Hare's death. If it was the former, I'd treat it with more than a pinch of salt.
@SuperZero42 Жыл бұрын
@@zarabada6125 the former. He talked about it on Lurkers guide while the show was still on, and in various interviews later. Never said why O'Hare left early, just that there were problems on set and he wanted to leave the show. JMS "tried to convince him to stay" (which we now know was really something far different) and then had to make some changes to the first half of S2. Among other things, the outline for Chrysalis, pt II became Points of Departure, and a couple story ideas from the first three eps got repackaged into later ones.

I loved Jeffs' reaction haha. A thought; I wonder about that line from Delenn. 'Lennier told you a thousand years ago, human and Minbari souls began to merge. My change was done in part to even the scales and restore balance to the races.' Rhetorical question; so did Valen himself cause the souls to be transferred? I would have though the Vorlons were responsible, if anyone. They're always to blame for meddling... This makes me wonder, the way she describes it, its' like Valen did a bad or unnatural thing by causing this and she was 'righting' history to undo the human-Minbari soul union...
@SuperZero42 Жыл бұрын
If you think about it from a purely practical perspective, it's not actually souls merging- just that human DNA is mixed with Minbari. Valen as a holy warrior, prophet, etc, everyone just gets behind. But it would be absurd not to add to that that Valen had offspring. He's still Sinclair, after all. As far as evening the scales, Valen only knew what Sinclair knew. He would probably have made some correct speculation regarding the long term implications of his, and Delenn's, change, but his prophecies only came from what he actually knew before taking B4 back. So he gets prophetic and says something like "One will come, a thousand years hence, who will reunite us with our other halves" or something- but it's the rest of the Minbari themselves who would put it in the religious context of merging souls. Delenn herself seems like she's just beginning to figure that out here.

This reminds me of the numerous reactions and compilations of reactions to the end of the second season of "The Mandalorian". ▼ ▼ ▼ Some/many of the fans had read novels & comic books about Luke's & Leia's & Han's continuing adventures after the original movies, and knew that Disney's lying crap sequels didn't show the real them, so they still hadn't really gotten to see the original characters on screen again after all those years. Then came that scene of that episode of the Mandalorian, and it dropped plenty of hints about who the rescuer was but wouldn't show his face at first. So people knew who it was and knew what was coming. But there still had to be that moment when Luke lifted the hood and confirmed it, just like that moment when Sinclair confirmed what the fans already knew by then, by saying the line calling himself Valen. And just like this one, that one had various people crying, jumping around screaming, and/or saying on how emotionally exhausting it was.

REAL POINT FOR PEOPLE THAT HAVE SEEN THE WHOLE SERIES!!! POSSIBLE SPOILER!!!!! ****WARNING**** two real questions, where does the triluminary actually come from, if the minbari discovered it. and who is using who? ;) how much do the soul hunters really know?
@nbartlett6538 Жыл бұрын
The triluminary was made by the Great Machine on Epsilon 3. Zathras brings it with him in WWE part 1 and gives it to Sinclair. He takes it back in time, uses it to become Valen, then it's lying around on Minbar for 1000 years until it's used by the Grey Council during the battle of the line to discover Sinclair's Minbari soul, and later by Delenn for her own transformation.

@@ianstopher9111 i have a different possible explanation.. but i dont wanna say for the sake of spoilers.. you can probably figure it out if i said, the morality of mixing 2 species souls is questionable. ;) as are many things.. do you see where im coming from?
@sdfried4877 Жыл бұрын
@@calhackit9806 We don’t really know if there is any soul mixing. The Soul Hunters don’t believe in reincarnation or the afterlife. They believe the soul is lost unless caught and collected. Based on their biological and technical proficiency in that area, they make a compelling argument. Sinclair was not Valen reincarnated, he was Valen in the flesh. The Minbari totally misunderstood what the Triluminary was telling them. The alteration of the Minbari race was not necessarily a spiritual one but a genetic one. As we know now, human DNA, which is physically weaker, was introduced into the gene pool 900 years ago and has spread throughout the species. Lennier’s comment about subsequent generations being lesser than those before can be attributed to the slow hybridization of the Minbari over time. The discovery of Sinclair lent credence to the idea that the two races share souls but I think was always hogwash resulting from the Religious Caste being in charge of the “science”. It was a convenient theory that seemed to fit their evidence.

He seems to get bored by episodes that aren't 100% tied into the main arc, and doesn't seem to understand that they are establishing characters and motivation for what comes later in the arc. And his reaction to "Avalon" was bizarre. But despite moaning about the show so much, when you watch his reactions he really seems to be enjoying it.
