One problem I see for the machine learning is that the data you'll have will be overwhelmingly cheaters, so that might bias your neural network

Well the thing is that not only do you get the data on the cheaters but also the data on all the other players on the match, and getting replay data form clean games isn't hard either. So you can quite confortably get a good validation and training set. The issue I see cropping up is segmenting and identifying that data in a consistent reproducible way. Because if you just feed raw replay packets to the AI not much will work. You would need to extract things like camera movements on individual characters, trigger responses to accuracy changes, and all of those stuff right out of the raw data as this is your best bet to get significant data relevance

You’re suggesting anomaly detection vs. signature detection. Anomaly detection requires much more investment and may falter with edge cases. It’s much easier just to see what cheaters are already doing and comparing them to others. The worse case scenario is cheaters will adapt and look more like regular players.

Just would like to add a few ideas and experiences I have had with a system like this. I feel this is oddly similar with infstar in some games. Being that is is its own anticheat, however it also has a community driven ban list. I was a common player in ARMA III, placed a lot of time in ARMA (almost rivaling TF2). However at the beginning of my time with ARMA III I had terrible internet. I had terrible packet loss and how ARMA III handles net-code it will desync your actions. I was playing on a common popular server one day playing in a town with a dmr rifle. Apparently, I shot an admin through a wall, even though I stood up and shot him down a straight street from up top of a building. Even though I had evidential proof and full on recording of me making the shot. I was marked as a packet manipulator and banned from the server. After applying for a unban with my proof, they then instead added an infstar ban to my account and never left me know. At the time, not many servers use infstar so I never noticed. However now 80-90% of ARMA III servers use infstar, making that game entirely unplayable for me now. I cant even make a server for myself as ARMA hosts now auto install infstar. I can only self host, which takes a lot of resources to do... My advice would be if this becomes down the route of a server/client plugin to denote cheaters; kinda like infstar. Please, make sure there is extra consideration on the movement between sus to cheater. I still am sad I cant play anything that has infstar built into it (This goes down the line of dayz, ARMA I-III, and a bunch of other games). All because of a false flag. However, watching your video allowed me to also gain hope on this as well. While watching I thought of an idea for you. Possibly has been mentioned before however: - You plan on using demo files to store evidence of cheaters. Why not go as far as do something like overwatch in csgo does? Where they use the demo file and you only see the "cheaters" pov. After gaining trust in denoting cheaters, maybe users could go through and look over these demo files for some type of reward? (possibly too expensive.) I am not sure how the demo file is packed, but you could build something that reads the demo files in a separate app. That way, you don't have to go down the route of AI insanity, and it would be a community effort. Plus if you do manage to make an app to read demo files, you could also hide player info like what overwatch (csgo) does. That way, there would potentially be no bias. Its just you and the vision of the cheater. Also love the idea of a client built for tf2 to do automatic kicking of a determined cheater. However, might be a bit difficult to talk players into installing this client/config file. Meaning it might take a year in order to start seeing the affects of work.

My main concern is the fact that it's public and open source. The bad guys will take advantage of whatever they can I'm sure of that, namely the botkicker tool. Also the managers of the other DBs could be bad actors potentially too, so I hope you get lucky with the people, maybe some big, willing names or someone they trust. It's always hard to be the good guy and be transparent, it always sets you up for an uphill battle against the petty, undeserving malicious people, but good luck. I may even participate for once.

This is definitely something that requires some of the more big tftubers in my opinion. Since most of them are well known and trustworthy. And tend to have more money than the average tf2 player. The only one I wouldn't ask for this is uncle Dane but that's only because he's already hosting a lot of servers 24/7 and I can't imagine the bills he's paying every month

it being Open Source can also be a huge helper to it though, look at the linux kernel, due to the sheer number of contributors, bugs and vulnerabilities are more likely to be found by the people working on it rather than some hacker looking to do some damage.

The auto-kicking program seems like it would be effective Against solo cheaters but not against cheaters who group together. Whenever this gets rolled out its probably gonna force even more cheaters to que together making them harder to kick. Is there anyway of addressing this or is there not much you can do against group cheaters?

@@D-S-G. IDK why TF2 players don't just ditch Valve's cheater infested MM, and just go to password protected community servers that actually have admins you can page when a cheater gets thru. Then the admin can invisibly spectate and determine if that's a valid report. Sounds slower than VAC right? Not automated = slow. WRONG. Not automated = efficient. VAC will literally detect a cheater, then let them keep going for weeks while it schedules them into the next "ban wave." This ban wave does nothing. They say its to prevent cheat developers from making their cheats undetected. I got news for Valve, they have no problems doing that, and you delaying bans means they get to stockpile cheats and injections methods and release them slowly. So when the ban wave does happen, they are already ready, they just release their next incremental version and they are undetected within 24 hours again.

very valid concern, since one of the primary methods being used to identify cheaters is manual human labour, there's a level of good-will we just have to believe in & trust that they won't mark anyone that isn't cheating but they just have a bias against. based on TF2's past when it gets to that, subjectivities & feelings get in the way of doing the appropriate thing more often than not

The only issue I have with this is how integral Discord, of all things, seems to be for this. Perhaps other alternatives, such as a mix of IRC and media hosting services, alternative means could be better in some way. Discord tends to go out sometimes, even for prolonged periods, and it's kind of a bloated mess. Something with more stripped-down functional purpose could be better for managing all of this. I cannot recommend anything in particular, but I'm certain there are better options. I would advise to look into it. Over-reliance on a social network like this might be to a detriment. Right tools for a right job kinda deal.

There’s mods and RTDs and other stuff in the servers, so would the system still be effective in not raising false positives in those servers, or will it work purely in casual servers with community servers being unaffected? I was concerned by the number of white dots on the original database. Humans are prejudiced by nature, so for some (myself included) it felt like marking someone as having connections to cheaters was immoral. It's good to see that this info has been hidden from the public eye, which addresses my only concern I had. This sounds amazing-- couple things of note: 1. Will there be a system for manual review? No anticheat is perfect, so it'd probably be a good idea to have a system where either on request a human can review demos, or demos are reviewed randomly per user to confirm/deny what the AI thinks-- I'd hate for normal players to be effectively banned without any ability to appeal. 2. How will these child servers be authorized? I'd imagine that you will be vetting everyone who wants to make one (otherwise a server could be made to spam you with reports and overwhelm the system), but that could end up being extremely time consuming depending on the number of child servers. As well, the more child servers, the more points of failure-- al it takes is for one child server to be compromised and the entire system could be shut down. 3. How do you plan on creating an AI anticheat that's effective enough with """just""" a 4090? It's powerful, sure, but it's not exactly optimized for AI, and I'd predict months (if not years) of training would be required to get an anticheat with any level of accuracy. Alternatively, you could rent server time-- which is *very* expensive, but might be the only way to actually train it effectively in a reasonable amount of time. Overall great work, I can't wait to see where this goes (and hey, if I see anything I can help out with on the gh, I'm pretty good with js/ts :D)

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. I want to preface that these arguments are an exploration of what could be possible and under the premise that your system works as intended. What you're effectively creating is a system where you choose who plays and who doesn't. Your intentions are good don't get me wrong, however the potential for abuse this kind of system has is really high. Saying there will never be false positives is disingenuous. First off, your database isn't based on anything objective, i.e. VAC caught you messing with its memory. AI scanning scuffed demos or mediocre players reviewing clips isn't objective and you WILL get false positives. Another problem is fake evidence. Since the system isn't objective, any person can fabricate a clip or demo and indict someone. It would probably be quite easy to do so on an innocent player who has been marked as suspicious. I've gone through it and there's so many ‘suspicious’ players who I believe aren't cheaters or suspicious at all. You encourage people to view them as innocent, that's great and all, but this is a design flaw. No one BUT confirmed cheaters should be on the database and it doesn't make any sense whatsoever to have others on it. I can think of zero reasons why that don't have abuse potential to have non cheaters on it. A thing I find weird and noteworthy is having confirmed legit players. Is there any point to this at all? Any of those players can start closet cheating and be brushed off as being super good. “He's a confirmed legit player on the database so he can't be cheating!” You could easily monetize this as well once it’s already well established, opening up another can of worms of exploitation. You're already giving people the option to pay/buy their way into the system. And as I’ve said before, nothing is really stopping a closet cheater from getting into the system and enjoying immunity and the social proof that comes along with that. Putting ‘trusted’ players onto the database is a major flaw. Might I add that you're also storing IP addresses? To me this is very red flaggish. You're resorting to a fear tactic that also puts control on innocents just so you can scare off the big bad cheaters. This is morally dubious. Hypothetically, your system works and is widespread enough that a potentially innocent person can't play casual anymore. Is your next plan to dominate the community servers with your newfound funds and get their IP as well? What are you doing with such information anyway? What's stopping you from adding people you don't like/share your values? You can say that you won't abuse your power. But the point is that It's possible and you have the power to do so Now there’s a few social issues this system creates. Marking players as suspicious puts unnecessary and frankly incorrect pressure on the accused players. Player’s reputations can be ruined, paranoid players will kick them anyway despite Big Mega saying they’re innocent. Look, I'm not saying that you'll ever do these things but the potential is there and is concerning. And I don't think Valve would care enough to do anything about it. I know I'm coming off as accusatory but someone needs to say this. I’ve barely scratched the surface on all the possibilities of how this system could be abused and I’m sure people can come up with a very long list. While it is sad that Valve has abandoned the game, it shouldn't warrant a nuclear solution that has the possibility of making everything worse. Personally, I never found cheaters and bots to be a big problem. It's a part of the game, every game. Oh, there's a cheater on the other team and they're not getting kicked? Time to requeue. Bots? They've already been kicked at the start of the game. The potential for abuse and the inevitable innocents getting caught in the crossfire doesn’t justify this. This is a terrible idea.

The database isn't controlled by him it's controlled by everyone, even if he did corrupt his coding bud would cut him off or the community would stop using the anti-cheat 2. he is not when did he ever say he was using the IP's as "scare tactics" your IP is shared with a community server when your in it do you care? No. 3. Sus players have to be stored on the database so they can be reviewed. Paranoid players only see what Mega tells them so they will have no reason to kick the player. 4. It would be impossible for it to get to the point where it dominates all of TF2 as content creators would warn players not to use it. I rest my case.

It's already several month past late October 2023, when the open beta was initially supposed to launch, and the only thing they've managed to do is a UI with virtually zero practical functionality. Then the "anti-cheat" will be based on client info.... despite the whole philosophy around the project's security being that you can't ever trust client info...
