Many of us have heard the name "Armageddon" from the New Testament's Book of Revelation and of its religious significance, but few of us really know the history of the word and the ancient city behind it. In this program, we'll examine the history Tell Megiddo to unlock some of its secrets and learn more about the people who once lived there.

The first battle of Megiddo, in which Thutmose III defeated the rebellious Canaanite rulers in 1457 BC, is considered by most scholars as the first reliably documented battle in world history. We have multiple Egyptian texts explaining various details of the battle including army sizes, formations, movements, body counts, etc. All sources relate back to one man, the Egyptian military scribe Tjaneni, who accompanied Thutmose's army on the campaign, and who wrote a daily journal of the events.

I mean, but we also know that the battle of Kadesh was significantly different than it was portrayed by the Egyptians. The Egyptians claimed they won a massive victory, the Hittites claimed they won and the reality being that the Hittites retained control of Kadesh. So take Egyptian sources financed and created at the Pharaoh’s instruction with a grain of salt. Relying on a single source of information typically has this problem. That’s why corroboration is king.

Not true...the real megido is in Yemen..the word Armageddon actually is "Har magido" from the semitic (middle east and Yemen old languages) which means "the mount of "magido" , still today it exists in Yemen "Gabal megido" and its inhabitants are called Bani megido

It is a Greek transliteration of the Hebrew har mgiddô. The Hebrew word for Armageddon is best taken to mean Mount Megiddo, since "Har" in Hebrew means mountain and "Mageddon" is the place-name of Megiddo. Megiddo is mentioned twelve times in the Old Testament, ten times reference to the ancient city of Megiddo, and twice with reference to "the plain of Megiddo". It isn't by any means a modern conceptualization, this has always been the case.

@@CC-9333_Thorn Christian scholar William Hendriksen wrote "Har Magedon is the symbol of every battle in which, when the need is greatest and believers are oppressed, the Lord suddenly reveals His power in the interest of His distressed people and defeats the enemy. When Sennacherib's 185,000 are slain by the Angel of Jehovah, that is a shadow of the final Har-Magedon. When God grants a little handful of Maccabees a glorious victory over an enemy which far outnumbers it, that is a type of Har-Magedon. But the real, the great, the final Har Magedon coincides with the time of Satan’s little season. Then the world, under the leadership of Satan, anti-Christian government, and anti-Christian religion - the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet - is gathered against the Church for the final battle, and the need is greatest; when God's children, oppressed on every side, cry for help; then suddenly, Christ will appear on the clouds of glory to deliver his people; that is Har-Magedon." I guess you could say their history of faith & battles. Megiddo has seen many battles going back to the 5000s BC. Ancient Egypt, Assyria, the Philistines, Babylon. I think the people of the past understood they will always be challenged on the subject of their faith and identity, they hope that God will continue to deliver them from their enemies even until their last stand.

It’s because the “visions” reported in the book of Revelations were not actually predictions - they are history viewed through a veil of religious hallucinations. Revelations is not about the end of history. It’s about the BEGINNING of history.

The reason why Megiddo is written as the location for Armageddon -- the battle of all battles at the end of the world -- is because it was the site of the largest battle that the writers of The Bible would have known about within their lifetimes: The Battle of Megiddo in 609 BC. In that battle, Pharaoh Necho II of Egypt marched a great army through the Levant but were refused passage by Judean king Josiah. They fought at Megiddo, with Josiah perishing and Egypt annexing Judah. One interesting consequence of this battle it that it delayed the Egyptians from uniting with their allies the Assyrians, who without Egyptian aid fell to the Babylonians and Medes, effectively ending the Assyrian Empire. The Babylonians would soon afterward mop up the remains of the Egyptian army at Carchemish in 605 BC, and in the ensuing decades seize Judah and the Levant, crush a rebellion, destroy Jerusalem, and cart the enslaved peoples back to Babylon, thus ending any hope for an independent Hebrew state for the next 2500 years.

Don't forget the 'Battle of Megiddo' in the 15th Century BC either. Between Pharaoh Thutmose III and a large rebellious coalition of Canaanite vassal states led by the king of Kadesh. It's the first battle to have been recorded in what is accepted as relatively reliable detail. It's all recorded in the Hall of Annals in the Temple of Amun-Re at Karnak, Thebes, by the military scribe Tjaneni.
@Ishkur23

@@mormacfey Yes, there have been a lot of battles there before. But none of them were within the living memory (and possible eyewitnesses) of the writers of the Bible. They had a very self-focused and extremely localized perspective from which to tell their history and make their proclamations. So nearly everything in the Old Testament was written from the point of view of the people living in the Levant at the time (~6th century BC), with their shared experiences, limited knowledge base, and narrow understanding of what's going on in the world.

@@Ishkur23 Well yeah, if we are to believe everything they said was true, humans were created in 3969BC. We know for a fact human civilizations had already existed at that time long before Adam and Eve were created, like The Danubian Culture in Europe 5500BC - 3500BC, Mesopotamia Civilization 6500BC - 539BC (they somehow survived the flood 2515BC along with Egypt), The Jiahu Culture 7000BC - 5700BC, 'Ain Ghazal 7200BC - 5000BC, The Çatalhöyük Settlement 7500BC - 5700BC, Australian Aboriginals 50000BC - today. Didn't help they started writing things after a local dark age either losing the knowledge of what things actually meant especially for the source materials of their older myths.

2,500 years? Have you never heard of Hanukkah, bro? The Maccabees had a state, from ~170 bc until the Romans rolled in around ~40 bc. So 3-4 generations depending on how long you consider a generation. And after the Romans rolled in it took over 130 years to get Judea under control with their genocides and mass deportation. The rebellions clearly wouldn’t have happened if they had no hope of establishing an independent state…

Josiah was the "saint" king of judea, for his demise there, tales said one day the king of the jews/messiah will be risen from meggido in apocalyptic battle, Christians took on with these tales and hence came the idea of battle in har meggido, or Armageddon, the reason almost every person in western civilization heard of this place.

I think that is just part of it. Megiddo is in the basically only way for a long bit that you march an army north or south so the site has seen countless battles, even as late as WW1. It is the site that have seen most battles in an otherwise war torn region so it is an obvious choice for a future battle. I recommend the book "Digging up Armageddon" by Eric H Cline, it is an interesting book about the Chicago expedition in the 20s and 30s, what they find and their soap opera like stay in the area. He himself have dug a lot at the site and he speaks a lot about the history and what is in each layer too. Most famous building there probably "The stables of Solomon" which actually was built a couple of hundred years later then when they are supposed to been built, the Chicago expedition knew this already when they dug them up but their initial message to their patrons said Solomon built them so they just went for it to not look stupid. :)

Copper alloy is such a less descriptive term, to be frank. Bronze is specifically 85-90% copper and 10-15% tin. There are also ways to make it with arsenic but it seems to have been far less prevalent. There are many copper alloys and they aren’t all bronze, i don’t know why anyone would choose to be less specific intentionally when the information to be more specific is readily available.

@@HistorywithCy I'm a bit easier to please than the rest of the Total War community. I like it but I am kinda disappointed by the geographical size of the campaign map; it should have been at least southern Balkans, Greece, Crete/Aegean, all of Anatolia, and Mesopotamia. Currently the map is central Anatolia, the Levant, Egypt and western desert, and Nubia. Probably in future dlcs, the map may be expanded to include those areas. There aren't enough playable and non playable factions in my view. Egyptians, Canaanites, and Hittites. I do appreciate the detail the developers took with using native ancient Egyptian names for the settlements in the Two Lands. I've asked for something like pharaoh since Rome II came out. My wish for the game was at release a campaign map about the geographic range as Rome II and Attila with Egyptians, Canaanites, Hittites, Assyrians, Mittani, Babylonia, Mycenaeans, Minoans, Libu tribes, etc. The sea peoples would be an event like the Mongols in Medieval II and some dlc ideas would be making them playable as like a horde faction, then a future dlc with Elamites added and maybe Indus valley. My hope is in the future they try a proper bronze age title like I described.

@@qh777 Ok good to know! They might have add ons and mods in the works. I was just wondering because I like using the gameplay to make machinimas and was wondering if it was worth getting it for that. Thanks for your opinion, it's really helpful!

Yahweh was the storm deity. Baal was the fertility deity. Elah was called the king of the gods so he's the original before polytheists put partners with him.

Jesus comes as a thief in the night; only to slaughter, pillage, and destroy; come and gone before you awake. Then, when they awake, the kings of the earth gather at the site called Armageddon - apparently, to beat their swords into plowshares. A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly. (Joh 10:10 NABO) ("Behold, I am coming like a thief." Blessed is the one who watches and keeps his clothes ready, so that he may not go naked and people see him exposed.) They then assembled the kings in the place that is named Armageddon in Hebrew. (Rev 16:15-16 NABO) He shall judge between the nations, and impose terms on many peoples. They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks (Isa 2:4 NABO)

@@mormacfey Ok. I can be a little slow on the uptake. I see what you are saying. Prophetically, they used colloquial terms, of the common vernacular, terms that were idiomatic for the day, within their grasp of understanding as pertaining to the motif, within the existing manufature for said motif. Understanding what was to come, Joshua led then into the promised land and Moses took the highway across the desert to the border of the promised land within weeks of their departure from Egypt. His flock of chickens... uh... I mean - Christians.. were afraid to enter. Are we expecting something worse than the Holocaust? It shall be a time unsurpassed in distress since nations began until that time. (Dan 12:1 NABO) for at that time there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will be. (Mat 24:21 NABO) Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake (Dan 12:2 NABO) I have decided to put an end to all mortals on earth (Gen 6:13 NABO) the fiery revolving sword, to guard the way to the tree of life (Gen 3:24 NABO) The vision of the evenings and the mornings is true, as spoken (Dan 8:26 NABO) Your covenant with death shall be canceled and your pact with the nether world shall not stand. When the overwhelming scourge passes, you shall be trampled down by it. Whenever it passes, it shall take you; morning after morning it shall pass, By day and by night; terror alone shall convey the message. (Isa 28:18-19 NABO) In the morning you will say, 'Would that it were evening!' and in the evening you will say, 'Would that it were morning!' for the dread that your heart must feel and the sight that your eyes must see. (Deu 28:67 NABO) There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished! "I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! (Luk 12:49-50 NABO) (it is better to marry than to be on fire (1Co 7:9 NABO) Be fruitful, and multiply (Gen 1:28 KJV) "For by my wrath a fire is enkindled that shall rage to the depths of the nether world, Consuming the earth with its yield, and licking with flames the roots of the mountains. (Deu 32:22 NABO) Down I went to the roots of the mountains; the bars of the nether world (abyss) were closing behind me forever (Jon 2:7 NABO) I saw a star (Wormwood Rev 8:11 NABO) that had fallen from the sky to the earth. It was given the key for the passage to the abyss. (Rev 9:1 NABO) 'Who will go down into the abyss (nether world)?' (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead) (Rom 10:7 NABO) We saw his star (of Bethlehem) at its rising and have come to do him homage. (Mat 2:2 NABO) The star was called "Wormwood (Rev 8:11 NABO) It was given the key for the passage to the abyss. (Rev 9:1 NABO) I hold the keys to death and the netherworld (Abyss). (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead) (Rom 10:7 NABO) As the Lawless One, with all the power, signs, and wonders at the disposal of falsehood, and seeming to be a part of the workings of Satan, 2Thess 2:9-11, he leads them astray, as if with a bridle in the jaw of the people, on the day of the great slaughter, Is 30:25-28, having been given the power and rule, along with great authority of The Dragon as the First Beast/ Red Dragon, Rv 13:2, with seven heads and ten horns, Rv 12:3. Just as it is appointed that human beings die - be judged - appear a second time, (so also Christ) Heb 9:27-28. Then the (Red) Dragon (Demon Sin) stood before the woman about to give birth, to devour her child when she gave birth. (Rev 12:4 NABO) And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord (Jesus) will kill with the breath of his mouth and render powerless by the manifestation of his coming, (2Th 2:8 NABO) If you do well, you can hold up your head; but if not, sin is a demon lurking at the door: his urge is toward you, yet you can be his master (Gen 4:7 NABO) Who, robed in splendor, judges nations, crushes heads across the wide earth, Who drinks from the brook by the wayside and thus holds high the head. (Zec 11:15 NABO) For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. (1Co 1:25 NABO) for power is made perfect in weakness. (2Co 12:9 NABO) and when he was made perfect, he became the eternal source of salvation for all (Heb 5:9 NABO) But I am a worm, hardly human, scorned by everyone, despised by the people. (Psa 22:7 NABO) God sent a worm which attacked the plant, so that it withered. And when the sun arose, God sent a burning east wind; and the sun beat upon Jonah's head till he became faint. Then he asked for death, saying, "I would be better off dead than alive." (Jon 4:7-8 NABO) (Thus begins the way of the lord in the desert) He grew up like a sapling before him, like a shoot from the parched earth… He was spurned and avoided by men, a man of suffering, accustomed to infirmity (Isa 53:2-3 NABO) (apparently, the worm attacked the shoot also) ------------------------------------------------- Warning of the impending Day of the Lord, he was swallowed by the Beast out of the Sea and spewed out upon the shore as the Beast out of the Earth, as the sun beat down upon his head and a burning east wind began the Way of the Lord in the Desert. The way of the Lord in the desert needs to be put into context with the previous passage: The First Beast - Day of the Lord - Sacrifice - Indeed, she has received from the hand of the LORD double for all her sins. The European Jews are not descendants of Khazars. That is ridiculous. What's more, nearly half of the Jews in Israel are actually descendants of the so-called Mizrahi Jews, who lived all over the Middle East and North Africa until 1948. There are also Jews from Ethiopia there.
