The fact that the spartans were made to fight insurrectionists and not the covenant is one of my favorite twists in the lore. I can’t wait for Halo 2 which will give you that covenant lore you’re craving. I also cant wait for Halo Reach, you’re in for a wild ride.

The really mindscrew, is the secret committee of AI were able to extrapolate from what turned out to be the first image of High Charity, combined with the Drake Equation, and Fermi Paradox, that Humanity was not alone, and that unless something was done would like fail and fall. The Spartan II program is overkill for dealing with insurrectionists, aimed for stomping out civil war quickly but to be prepared for the unknown threat looming very nearby.

As far as why the Covenant are eliminating humanity, you're on track about them worshipping the Forerunners and viewing them as gods. There's a history there that's only hinted at in the games but the books will give detailed answers to the questions you posed.

Chief's origin story is by far the most important part of that book, but It's weird to me that the "Fall of Reach" animated adaptation just kinda stops before the final chapter. The original book ends literally minutes before Halo 1 takes place and explains why keyes was taking a random jump to nowhere in the first place. If memory serves, the book version also gives a lot of answers to the questions you have about what Cortana is and why she behaves like she does, too.

Well, not completely, but some scenes need rewriting. So far, the most workable 'fix' has the Spartans assigned to Operation Red Flag kept literally in the dark about the rest of the invasion, to 'avoid distractions'. Up until the last stage, anyway. All UNSC AIs are created by flash-copying an actual human mind. So, yes, Dr. Halsey and Cortana do have the same voice, because Halsey created Cortana from her own mind. The novel has some amazing quotes, such as "I have no idea where they got the rope".

Certain editions of Halo: Reach came with a copy of Dr. Halsey's diary that she wrote during the events of this film, which contains a lot of the technical science behind the Spartan augmentations and Mjolnir armor. It also contains deeper characterization of her, and shows how she coped with the acts she committed. An interesting read all around, and shows the moral complexities of her character. You can find a pdf pretty easily online.

Trivia time: To continue with the tradition of referencing the number 7: -John's 117 tag number IS the number 7 because 1x1x7=7 -John-117 contains 7 numbers and letters. -When Hasley chose John for the program, she noticed "how special" he was, but she realized something else... With the coin test she wasn't testing his precisision, she was measuring his luck, and 7 is a lucky number, just like the Chief. -"Spartan" is a 7-letters long word. -Samuel-034's tag is also 7: 0+3+4=7 Spartans never die, they're just missing in action. And speaking about the Halo Iceberg, the only thing I'll say is "be careful not to dive too much into it this early" it could spoil some of the games. I think the safest moment to approach most of the lore is after playing (at least) Halo 1,2, and Reach. That's when we (at least I) will start recommending a bunch of complementary media full of awesome stories!

If you want a good (but relatively long) deeper dive, definitely check out the audiobook version of the Fall of Reach. This movie is serviceable, but it’s an abridged retelling with major Spartan characters entirely missing from the movie, which is sad given the whole thing at the beginning about remembering their friends. Also Keyes is in the book, and it’s like THE primary source on Keyes as a person and how he handles the insanity around him, which compounds on his heroism in CE

the overall story telling and characterization of so many character was decent in the books, even though the writing style was horrible. At least in my language. Should at some point try to read the english version, but i have not much time to read at all and reading in a foreign language is kinda exhausting. And to be precise, bungie actually didnt retcon the books. Bungie had the phylosophie of always games first. So if they wanted to coney a story, they did it in the games. The media expansions were only for expanding the universe, not telling mayor plotpoints. and to be honest ... i cant even remember what theyve retconned? It took me a while to understand the cortana arc, but everything right now is plausable to me. Maybe someone can help me remember what exactly is not in line with the books with reach anymore.

@@SilverViper1000 Bungie held the games first philosophy because there was a large part of the Bungie creative writing team who didn’t like their universe being shared with whoever Microsoft hired to make books, despite the fact that the Fall of Reach writer actually pitched in and helped refine the CE script in the 11th hour. It’s always come off to me as really childish and unprofessional

@@SilverViper1000 The initial Halo novels aren't so much "expanded universe" as establishing the universe. The Fall of Reach was published on October 30 2001. Halo 1 was released on November 15 2001. Eric Nylund wrote the book while Halo was still in development and actually contributed to the worldbuilding. A lot of basic Halo lore was established by Nylund in the Fall of Reach. Now, the games are of course the main story and they can't be expected to follow every single detail in the books, but I do think Nylund's contributions to the franchise are a little more meaningful than what we think of when we hear "expanded universe." The main thing Bungie contradicts (the only thing?) is the events on Reach. The "Fall of Reach" as depicted in Halo Reach is very different to the "Fall of Reach" depicted in the book. This was a deliberate choice on Bungie's part, as they were making an FPS and so had to mold Reach's story around that. In the book, a Covenant fleet shows up, fleet action occurs, the Orbital Defense Platforms hold them back, the Covenant send ground forces to destroy the planetside generators, they succeed, then the Covenant glass everything. Reach falls within hours. There's like one meaningful ground engagement. That'd make for a pretty bad FPS campaign.

@@SilverViper1000 I must have read Fall of Reach like 10 years ago. But from what i remember, in the English version, the writing style felt like you were reading a Military Document or Report. at least whenever they described what was happening during Missions. I thought it was cool back then, and it stood out enough to be memorable. I'm not sure if it was translation issue for your language, or it was bad and i just thought it was cool because I was a dumb 14 year old. I'll have to pick it back up and read it again soon.

The movie doesn’t go into it much but Halsey cares for the Spartan IIs like they are her children, she tried as hard as she could to ensure those augmentations were as safe as they could be. Believe me when I say the Spartan II’s are the best and as stable as they could have been for the available tech. She cares but she also has a job to do. while she doesn’t regret her actions she does recognize they were horrific.

Because they were still children, he was afraid on behalf of everyone else, give them too much leisure and that childish disobedient phase will strike. Life on earth in the Halo universe is pretty much dystopian. It literally has a global militarized government that allows no form of independence and even keeps the civilians in the dark about what really happens out of the planet. All of this is more or less inspired by Starship Troopers (and even StarCraft I'd say) so it makes sense on how pro-military it can be sometimes. This part of the lore has the most wasted potential of the whole franchise and that's sad because even StarCraft managed to exploit that political potential in a better way.

@@nicolascardenas4002 Starship Troopers never hid noncritical information from the populace to my recollection. Also, the government is the UEG, not the UNSC. @@brucemaximus3797 by keeping in the dark I don't necessarily mean hiding information but also filling news with propaganda that shows half-truths about what happened in the war, propaganda is just another way to keep people in the dark about how everything really works. And yes, I know that the unsc is not the earth government and that the oni is also there, I don't specifically refer to any of these but to their role as main government/military institutions that have the control over the whole civilization and how they oligopolist the military power for their own.
@primary2630
@primary2630 11 ай бұрын
They go against the UEG because they believed Earth thought itself and the inner-most colonies more important than the outer ones. The UNSC had no control over the government on Earth until after the Covenant attack humanity. Then, during the Human-Covenant war insurrectionists feel that the UNSC is strong-arming all of humanity into doing what it wants (which it was because they needed all of humanity's might to literally fight for survival) and that the UNSC was essentially a dictatorship based from Earth. So while not completely off the mark, Earth was far, far from dystopian. That is just outright incorrect.@@nicolascardenas4002

Halsey is a genius, and her work was crucial to saving humanity, but ultimately she is still a war criminal. I wouldn't go so far to say nothing justifies the spartan program. If it weren't for what was done to those kids to make them into spartans, the human race, including them, would have been wiped out. That said, if the people involved with the program are going to argue that no cost is too high to avoid extinction, then part of that cost has to be their own when they're tried as war criminals after it's all done.

No spoilers here, but if you want more covenant lore, the reason, not much is explained in Halo:CE, Is that the game was never planed to have a sequel. Bungie didnt take it very seriously. But when Halo:CE broke records, Bungie got kicked into high gear, and made lore, narratives, and story elements, that Halo 2 will finally give you. Because Halo:CE was never really meant to have a story. But halo 2, 3 and 4 explain about 60% of what is going on through out the games. However, most of the lore is in books, and spin off series like, Fall of reach and Halo CE anniversary, Halo 2 anniversary , Halo 3 ,Halo 4 terminals... The original Halo 1 and 2 did not have terminals. The remaster versions do. And btw Halo 3 terminals, were the first, terminals ever. But they are super cryptic, you will not know what is being said. Unless you read Halo Cryptum and some other book. Most of it, is gibberish frankly. So dont feel bad if you dont understand them. Nobody, who didnt read the two books, understood the Halo 3 terminals.

31:55 when the Covenant found harvest, their forerunner-based radars identified the humans individually across the planet. Originally the covenant thought that the icons were artifacts since they were labeled “reclamation.” When the future prophets of Truth, Mercy, and Regret presented the data to the forerunner AI in high charity, it identified the symbol as “Reclaimer”, the ones meant to inherit the role held by the Forerunners. The trio mistook this as humanity being forerunners who hadn’t ascended. If this knowledge got out, they feared that the covenant would be shattered. So they tried to wipe out humanity to cover up the truth.

I grew up on these games and books and haven't gone back to the older ones in many years, so I didn't have the benefit of adult wisdom when playing these for the first time and just thought wow person made into weapon cool. It's a lot of fun to see your take on it and how my own reactions have very much changed as well! I'm going directly to your Halo 2 vids from here, thank you so much for playing these and sharing them with us!!

I don't know if anyone's recommended it, and I've seen people recommend Headhunters and Evolutions, but there's a short series called Halo Legends. Basically it's a series of unique episodes done by anime artists. All of them, minus one (commenters know the one), are cannon to Halo and keep the desperate spirit that Halo is known for.

Halo 2 is my favorite campaign and maybe the OST i consider the best one. It’s a game that have everything, the only thing I regret is don’t play it when it was at his prime and the fact that is (even for the long the game is by itself ) incomplete or some of the content was cut due to lack of time

There is also a videogame called Halo: Reach, which I'm sure you will get to eventually. Unlike this movie (which is based off the novel: fall of reach) the game will actually show the fall. This movie only covers roughly half of the book.

I have no idea if this has been stated or not so forgive me for potentially repeating info. The coin that Dr Halsey uses to test John with the "game" is an actual item that John-117 has on his person throughout the trilogy. There are even mentions of this coin in Halo 3 however brief it may be.

There are flaws but i would 100% reccomend Halo: Forward Unto Dawn. Started as a web series and edited into a feature length movie. It's also set at a time where humanity was in a civil war. UNSC Vs The Insurrectionists I reccon you'd definitely enjoy it. Great music, good acting, live- action, and it has some horror elements into it that works so well. Not a huge budget but the showrunners worked with that they had and used that to their advantage in many ways. Look forward to you reacting to that 100%

Does not explain noble 6, a spartan 3 lieutenant. I get noble 6 was a pilot, but once again why did they get to go to flight school and other spartans didnt? Was it just the exceptional spartans that got to be commissioned? Then why not John, or does he just love his enlisted rank? I mean most know him and call him by his rank.

So I didn't read all the comments, but I haven't really noticed many people talk about it as I was going through them. Humanity before the Covenant war had already begun a fair bit of colonization, with various planets, moons, asteroid bases and such, numbering in the high couple of hundreds thresholds, a little under a thousand. The inner colonies were the earliest ones and closest to Earth and its unified power of influence. While the outer colonies were further away and created later. The insurrectionist movement was basically born in the outer colonies, who were seeing the UEG as a draconian, oppressive entity keeping them down when they were far away from them. Seeking by many means, sadly often violent. To get their independence. And by violent, I mean taking over UNSC military vessels and using them against the inner colonies kind of violent. That's why the people in charge, though they needed to create something like the Spartan-II program, so they could have a very small group of elite shock troops they could deploy in any situation, that could overwhelm the odds and take over no matter how bad said situation was. Also, Ha! The idea of Cortana having been created from Keyes is kinda funny! But you'll know more about all that as you continue to play! I've certainly enjoyed watching someone new playing through such a classic as Halo:CE from my teens, took me and friends a bit to get through this thing on Legendary of all things. We wanted a challenge and we certainly got it! For now, on to watch your trials in Halo 2!

Some may question Dr. Halsey's unethical and immoral methods of creating the Spartan 2s but she in my opinion was a necessary evil for without her there would be no Cortana and Master Chief. Humanity would have embraced inevitable extinction if she didn't do what needed to be done.

Yes, technically. Though that does not wholly absolve her. I also have my own suspicious, about the role of the Librarian, the Assembly (see the Reach Data Pads) and the Reclamation, for that too, though, @SmileyBoi21 . So it does give her... some, extenuating circumstances (as may Geas/Genesongs) in a way. As may the Carver Finders, too (see Halsey's Journal...)

It’s the same thing as the nuclear bombs being dropped onto Japan. The average person thinks it’s cruel and unnecessary but if the bombs hadn’t dropped Japan wouldn’t have surrendered and the us would’ve been forced into invading homeland Japan, which would lead to countless deaths that could’ve been prevented.
