11:09 From the books I've read? Selina never really kills anyone unless someone goes out of their way to do something awful to people she cares about Considering that Daggett did make a virus that almost killed both her and her cat, it's sort of in character for Selina to think of him as "too much of a risk to let him live"

There was a great Batgirl Catwoman team up in the comic book, where Batgirl chases Catwoman all around the city. At the end she earns Catwoman's respect. Catwoman started out as a villian but never really was a murderer. She was a thief and always has had chemistry with Batman. When DC Comics launched Catwoman's own comic book in 1993 she became an anti-hero. Now she's considered part of the Batfamily or at least an ally. She's very different from Bruce. Bruce is a martyr and an idealist. Selina is a survivor and and a realist. This has been a consistant source of conflict between her and Bruce, but they are totally endgame. Also Catwoman has mentored a few fellow thieves at various points in the comic books.

The problem was never Bruce Timm. The fixation on Bruce/Barbara was always a key contribution by ALAN BURNETT (Producer/story editor for most of these shows/movies). Careful going any further if you want to avoid *light* spoilers: - Michael Reeves came up with the dream sequence idea in ''Batgirl Returns'' that Burnett approved (1994 - BTAS). - Alan Burnett suggested the actual failed romance angle in 'Batman Beyond' (1999) - Both Alan Burnett (Producer) and Michael Reeves (writer) made it more overt in 'Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman' (2003). A movie Bruce Timm had NO involvement in. - The pregnancy storyline from the 'Batman Beyond comic' had nothing to do with anyone from the DCAU team and is NOT canon. - Once again, Alan Burnett and Brian Azzarello had the idea of using it as a plot device for the newly created prologue in 'Batman: The Killing Joke'. Something Timm apparently had to be convinced about. Should Timm have put his foot down and refused? Yeah, probably, but to blame him for all of this is just unfair, yet the internet runs with it anyway because he was the figurehead.

Really? I’m confused because I always heard that Bruce Timm specifically liked the chemistry between Adam West and Yvonne Craig from the 60’s. I never heard or read an interview with him that stated that, but everyone that talks about this relationship always brings that specific point up. Do you know where that story of Timm got started?
@MMCC-14 ай бұрын
@@andrewj.browncomics7348 Yes, I remember that too, and he certainly went along with the story ideas that others suggested in BTAS and BB (Knowing it would challenge the viewers). Robin: Year One and Batgirl: Year One are a great pair of books that were later collected into a single volume in 2013. The same creators worked on both, so there's a consistent tone throughout. Highly recommended. Not only is Barbara incorruptible, she also never gave up fighting crime even after becoming paraplegic. As Oracle, she teamed up with the other female vigilantes in Gotham to create the Birds of Prey. The adaptations don't really do that series justice.

I feel like he's one of those guys that can't separate his own internal crushes from his characters? Like, maybe he had a crush on Batgirl as a kid, or has a thing for petite redheads in-general, and just _has_ to transpose it onto Bruce, because he was too old by this point to relate to Dick? Though, to be fair, it does make sense for this version of Barbara to have a crush of her own on Batman. I'm with Meg, though, it doesn't need to be here, and doesn't serve the story in any way, so, again, feels like weird wish fulfillment. And Timm is still weirdly oblivious to everyone's ick factor, here. He gets very defensive when anyone brings it up. He doesn't seem to get that the age difference isn't people's biggest issue, it's the whole "Bruce is best friends forever with her dad/Bruce is a quasi-mentor to her/Bruce is a father figure to her sometimes-boyfriend." Good God, that's about sixteen kinds of problematic right there.

Also, Batgirl will have a much more consistent partnership with Supergirl more than Catwoman in the DCAU from what I remember about these cartoons, especially once Superman and Batman episodes start to crossover. Catwoman I have no idea what happened with her character in the New Adventures of Batman show that coincided with the Superman TAS. Was she around? I remember not liking her redesign but not much else. Oh the Barbara/Bruce relationship extended into the Batman Beyond show that followed up TAS, it's referenced constantly despite the two not even being on good terms by then. It's hinted as the reason Dick stopped speaking to Bruce altogether according Barbara. It even poured into the initial run of the Batman Beyond comics that were a continuation of the cartoon, we aren't done with THAT weirdness for a while, Lol

Why is it a misstep though?
@davidhanson92806 ай бұрын
@@passionsquietrage In her first appearance, which is techinically "Heart of Steel", Bruce says "Barbara, you've grown". This would imply its been a long time since the last time he saw her, and being she's about Dick's age in this show, (either 18 or 19), Bruce has probably known her since she was underage. Also, Bruce knows Jim Gordon, and Robin's Reckoning shows that he's known him for AT LEAST 9 years, which means, he could've met Barbara when she was VERY young. Not to mention that Barbara dates Dick Grayson, both in the Subzero movie, and comics/most depictions, so Bruce, being Dick's paternal figure, would effectively be getting involved with his son's ex, in addition to potentially being a groomer. While Bruce Timm had to keep it 'appropriate' in the DCAU, the killing joke shows where his mind's at when there's no restrictions. It just casts an otherwise excellent depiction of Batman in a bad light.
@passionsquietrage6 ай бұрын
@@davidhanson9280 So being romanticly involved with someone he's known for years makes him a groomer and puts him in a bad light? @davidhanson92806 ай бұрын
@@passionsquietrage I hope you're trolling. Batman Beyond states that Dick DID have a problem with it, and saying Jim didn't care is an interesting conclusion to come to, since we've only ever seen him be aware of Barbara and Dick's relationship, and Bruce and Dick were one of the only confirmed relationships she had in the DCAU. Honestly, Bruce established himself as her mentor first, so yes there's a problematic power dynamic there. And if you think there's no issue being with someone when you've known them since they were a teenager/child when you were already an adult, that could mean that YOU'RE the problem, not other fans.
@passionsquietrage6 ай бұрын
@@davidhanson9280 I'm not trolling, I actually didn't know that about Batman Beyond, Dick clearly let it go though. I guess love booming between a mentor and mentee is a bad thing for some reason. We don't know how old Babs was when she first met Bruce, so we can't say for sure how long they've known each other. I've seen things like that happen in real life and in other media and this is the only case that triggers people so heavily. I don't see why love suddenly booming between two people who have known each other for years is a bad thing.

There isn’t any batgirl going bad material that I’m aware of, at least not Barbara Gordon batgirl. Definitely not in the animated series continuity anyway. As for the stories of nuanced villains trying to be good as more interesting, sometimes I like them, but I also think it’s necessary for them to revert to crime at some point. Most of them are in some way reflections of Batman and the villains reverting to crime and not being able to move forward or have a real life, mirrors how Bruce is never able to truly move passed his parents death, so he and all his villains are mentally trapped in this space where they can’t move passed their trauma or whatever it is that led them to crime. It’s not a very optimistic outlook, and personally I like to think there’s hope for everyone, but Batman and the world of Gotham have never been very optimistic in tone.

The 'Birds of Prey' comic did bring this dynamic back. Barbara becomes Oracle, and coordinates several heroines in a parallel and less obvious way the Gotham heroes, or 'Bat-Family'. Batman finds out and agrees this is a good idea, but Babs runs it. The way that book works is fascinating. Women trying to be professional with each other, but it'a all the personalities clashing in unexpected ways. Babs and Black Canary get close almost against their wills, Power Girl finds the underhanded stuff disgusting, though she can work with Huntress who was a previous pairing, then Catwoman joins, to find no-one trusts her and she simply leaves ( perhaps because Babs is involved with someone else ), then the team collects several more strays, some of whom end up as the Bat-Family's extended band of friends. Then it was all lost in a reshuffle once again. There was actually a 'Birds of Prey' TV series, but it died after only a few episodes, due to total content failure. It's a shame.

Maybe she was his first crush but it’s in the show pretty early on that she has a crush on him, the dream sequence here is just the official starting gun. Didn’t care as a kid and don’t like it as an adult, it’s one of the worst things about the DCAU in my book. That said the worst part of that ship thankfully only appeared in a comic set with in the DCAU so you can thankfully just ignore it (even if you’ve seen his terrible take on “The Killing Joke”). As for Selina I’m pretty sure the honeymoon phase is about to be over. Looking back the romance in BTAS is a more one sided thing from Bruce’s side. The BTAS/TNBA related comics give a reason for her new more comic accurate look in the TNBA episodes and why Bruce and her can’t work in this universe but you’ll see (check the Batman Adventures comics for more great stories), I love them together in the comics but this was never gonna end well. I wonder if Bruce Timm’s Babs/Bruce thing might partially be a generational issue. Timm would’ve been around 6 years old when Barbara was introduced. Robin was still largely played as a kid at the time so Babs was periodically depicted as potential love interest for Bruce. The Dick/Babs thing really started to pick up steam in the late 70s after Dick was aged up to be a college kid and started teaming up with Babs regularly in Batman Family. So it’s possible he imprinted on Bruce/Babs at an early age and missed the Dick/Babs stuff. Timm’s definitely not the only older creator who does this. Len Wein attributed Barbra’s choice of a Batgirl costume to her having a crush on Bats as a teenager in Untold Legend of The Batman #3
