Megson Farms in Benton, Kentucky has the largest herd of white thoroughbreds in the world. One of their horses was among nine animals from various farms that played the part of "Silver" in the Lone Ranger movie starring Johnny Depp.
For the past 40 years, the Megson family has been involved in all aspects of the horse business. Paul Megson has held a thoroughbred trainers license for some 26 years, and trained quarter horses before that. From the early days as Vice President of the Ohio Quarter Horse Racing Assoc., to a nine year elected span as a board member of the Ohio Thoroughbred Assoc., to five years as Director of Sales of National Equine Sales to a long carrier as a thoroughbred trainer---we have the experience that you can depend on here at Megson Farms.
A student of equine genetics and bloodline selection,Valerie Rowe Megson, Hillary Rowe Megson, and Berva Megson have studied at length under the tutelage of master breeder Dalene Knight, of Painted Desert Farms. Dalene was responsible for the isolation and perpetuation of the dominant white gene which has eluded breeders for many years. She was the leading breeder of white and multicolored thoroughbreds in the world.
Due to Dalenes retirement from the breeding business we were given the opportunity to obtain almost all of Dalenes broodmare band. Megson Farms now has the largest herd of white thoroughbred mares in North America and perhaps the entire world. All of the mares are double registered with the Jockey Club and the American Paint Horse Assoc.

That weanling had horrible confirmation. Also I could not Believe he said he was a trainer for 30 YEARS, but he proceeds to hit the foal in the face!!! Terrible training just straight up unprofessional & abusive. When any horse gets nervous or scared you do not act up as a trainer and then smack the horse in the face! Jesus I’m not even a horse trainer and I know that.

Thoroughbreds are often skinny or hard keepers but that foal already isnt developing well, if she had the right people raising her she could be a big strong yearling that actually had some muscle and fat on her. These people clearly only care about the money, and need to focus on raising happy healthy horses

Horses are head shy because they are not accustomed to contact with their head. They won't get accustomed to it if they aren't touched. How do you think they get horses for police work? By exposing them to new things until they get used to different experiences.

If you watched the video, you would have seen some horses that were mixed white and brown. These are also of great interest and value. Furthermore, a horse with one or two white parents will carry traits for white offspring so they are not useless in a white breeding program. "Lesions can occur in dark skin (dark colored horses as well as light colored can have dark colored skin) and in areas that are not usually exposed to sunlight, such as around the anus.[20]" Wikipedia

Why would they breed for a specific color of a horse. I’m not in horse breeding at all so I don’t know this for sure but if I had to take a guess the best race horse breeders don’t care about color and I’m guessing there horse barn is full of all the colors from black and chestnut and brown and maybe a few greys and whites but color is the last thing they care about they care about the talent of the horse. The horses in this video are beautiful don’t get me wrong but I’d be will to bet that the horses pedigrees aren’t the best when you compare them to other breeders
@trinasmith7809
@trinasmith7809 4 жыл бұрын
To have a horse that has talent and is of a rare color is a difficult goal to achieve but in life, what is difficult to achieve has great value. Besides, it is boring to see the same dull colored brown, bay and dark brown horses all of the time. Some of the horses in Japan which are white have outstanding pedigrees, like Yukichan which is related to Sunday Silence, a former Derby winner and Horse of the Year. Soon, they will be bringing some of these here to outcross with our thoroughbreds.

My take on Megson Farms: money, fame, animal abuse. You can tell this place has low values in what they do: hiring a trainer who grabs and hits horse in the face, winning races for "a lot of money", excited about Hollywood celebrity (the process of animals "acting" in movies is never good for the animal). And as "rare" as they may seem, animal with white hair pink skin come with health issues.

well, he hasn't instilled discipline in this horse since she was a baby. He's having to use his weight to try to get her to be still, whereas in my breed they are taught right away to "mind". He pushed her more than slapped her but this business of love/hug/kiss/pet is going to get them in trouble as this horse gains size without discipline. She is also ribby and her neck is "upside down". And leaving halters on, esp. the one with TWO, is a good way to get them killed.
@coollikegrass2489
@coollikegrass2489 5 жыл бұрын
@@watchgoose That is a weanling I don't know if you have ever seen a weanling, but you cant judge a weanlings or yearlings conformation. My yearling was ewe necked, horribly downhill and looked so sickle hocked. Her neck is now fine, she is level and her legs are no longer sickle.
@coollikegrass2489
@coollikegrass2489 5 жыл бұрын
And he didn't "slap" her. I don't see any abuse or wrongful treatment. A "tap tap tap" is not wrong, it's telling the horse not to be disrespectful. Have you ever handled a disrespectful horse? Sometimes you need to get physical. Horses are physical animals. If they get disrespectful to the dominant horse what does the dominant horse do? Kick them or bite them and chase them off.

No offense, but albinism is not a color in the equine world. They are actually called "white". Closest to it are perlino. What makes them whiter are no traces of gray markings and their skin color under their white hairs is dark skin like all horses. Plus they do NOT have pink eyes. So they are not albino but in their registry confirmation and pigment geneticist they are white. Dominate used in media as to color are mainly black and white horses. I have many fav colors so its hard for me to pic out my fav unfortunately and colors i've never heard of until now but I'm more of a fan with horses that have more color on their body over dilutes but im a lover of paints and pintos! *.*

I’m surprised at all the comments calling the baby “ugly” it’s a weanling!!! With the right home and trainer that could be a solid horse, the fact the chick grew up on this horse ranch and needs someone else to tell you about confirmation isn’t a good sign but that aside I don’t think you can properly judge confirmation until it’s at least 2yrs old and fully trained.

He was trying to grab the rope on the other side of the halter it only looked like he hit the horse. It was a bad angle, I watched it several times myself. A good trainer like Ed does not hit the horses especially slap them in the face it makes them harder to train and control later plus a bad swing and you can damage an eye, and these are not cheap horses not that that would matter. I used to help train and take care of horses for one of my uncles that had some expensive breeds and you just don't abuse the animals, for one you care too much about them and a professional like Ed he wouldn't have a job in the horse breeding and racing business very long if he abused the animals. Owners of expensive horses pamper their animals many times they actually go overboard doing so. It just looked bad. again bad angle and hard to see.

@LadyAkashe 6 жыл бұрын
Well, I have two white TB paint crosses and they both love the sun. I use a sleezy or small amounts of sun block but only when needed. Stalls are usually available at every horse show. Get yourself some sunglasses because these babies rock !! Hint: dark colors absorb the sun, light ones reflect it. These aren't unnatural horses. Just horses of a different color. I will say it again, these horses rock !!
@watchgoose
@watchgoose 6 жыл бұрын
White REFLECTS the heat, whereas dark colors ABSORB it. Didn't take science in school? Don't need rugs, they have shade trees, stalls, a dab of sunscreen, or the scrim covers to put on them. Many things are available. Dark horses need protection from the sun as well, as their color will fade. White horses don't fade.

Most grey horses actually have dark skin (unlike the horses in the video). It was concluded that the STX17 gene and the NR4A3 gene are both being over expressed in grey horses, which is responsible for the increased incidences of melanoma in horses with the grey gene. Gray horses are more likely to develop this type of cancer because they have more pigmented skin, and melanoma tumors arise from mutations in the cells that make up pigmented skin. There’s no prevention for melanoma development in the horse. Melanomas in horses tend to be slow growing, and most problems that occur are due to invasion of important structures around the area of the mass rather than from tumors developing in other parts of the body. (Some sources state horse is more likely to die of old age before the cancer gets them.)

TONY not all white horses are Thoroughbreds. White can occur in almost any breed of horse. But only registered Thoroughbreds can be race horses (in that industry). There is also an industry for racing QH, Paints, Arabs, etc. White is only a color, not a breed. You would not be allowed to take a white Saddlebred and race it, for instance.

these horses are all sabino(max sabino, it covers their actual color of chestnut, bay black and whatnot). there is sadly no such thing as a white horse, unless you count dominant white, which is lethal and means the horses are born with completely formed intestinal tracks. Dominant white can happen when two overo horses are bred.

@@tatorkator9901 You're thinking of Overo Lethal White Syndrome (OLWS). Dominant white is only lethal if inherited from both parents, not on its own, and they already die as an embryo. Dominant white also is a spontaneous mutation of the KIT gene and has nothing to do with Overo.

@Van Guess In fact, to get this color you need two alleles of the Cremello gene (CR/CR) as it is a recessive gene, that is only displayed when the carrier is homozygous. Buckskin and palomino horses are examples of heterozygous (CR/n) Cremello carriers.

Thank you Megson Farms! It's great to see this color being valued as white and spotted thoroughbreds have often been treated like any other color. We could have had more varied and interesting races if they had started when these colors first appeared. One day the winner of the Derby and other major races could be a white or spotted thoroughbred! I hope they keep breeding and breeding and breeding as these rare colors will always be in great demand and fewer horses will be abandoned at the end of their racing careers. Love how the trainer asserts dominance over the young horse. He's firm but not abusive and shows it can't be the boss, which horses naturally try to be. He rewards the horse with affection when it is behaving well. Their dams and buddies do the same thing.

Dominant white is a group of genetically related coat color conditions in the horse, best known for producing an all-white coat, but also for producing some forms of white spotting and white markings. Dominant white horses are born with unpigmented pink skin and white hair with dark eyes, although the amount of white hair or spotting can vary depending on which genetic mutation is involved. There are more than 20 DW mutation, atleast 7 of them are present in thoroughbreds. Even double Sabino (Sb1) can make a near white horse. So they are white, not cremello. (Cremello would have blue eyes, these have dark ones)

Cremello & Perlino WRITTEN BY: Wendy Bockman "Cremellos and Perlinos are often called Whites or Albinos which is incorrect. There are no albino horses, there are however White horses, to learn more about them see the page on White Horses. Cremellos and Perlinos are "double diluted" which means they have two copies of the creme gene instead of one like a Palomino or Buckskin. In other words a Palomino is a "chestnut" with one creme gene and a Cremello is a "chestnut" with two creme genes. A Buckskin is a "bay" with one creme gene and a Perlino is a "bay" with two creme genes. Cremellos and Perlinos have pink skin and blue eyes. Their hair coats are not white but are of a light creme color. Some can be so light they appear to be white but if you compare them to a true white horse you will see that they are actually creme."

@arianaendres
@arianaendres 6 жыл бұрын
Pony Love Not necessarily. People mostly break horses when they are 2 because its gets the process done. Its better to break a horse young because they learn faster, and are desensitized. That doesnt mean if you break a horse at 2 you can ride them around everywhere. You ride them a little bit for a few minutes and get off on a good note. By the time their 3 then you can start extensive training in whatever you wanna do with them. If you didnt know this I would guess you have never broken in a horse before. Its common knowledge but thats okay. Now you know. These people break the horses when they are yearling because large racing operations normally do this to get them ready and then at 2 they start racing them at high speeds that are unsafe because their bones are not fully developed and this normally causes break downs.

Who cares? White horses have been rare showpieces since Hannibal Barcca, roman generals and greeks rode them in parades after major war victories. When the settlers came they were most sought after by the Pawnee, Pewaukee and Illini tribes who liked them because they could color and paint them. They've had a place everywhere they've turned up and what these people are doing is certainly no worse than the foal train that gets run on most successful thoroughbred filly's et al.

Malice Burgoyne yea but I just think theses people should be more educated before creating a horse that's naturally rare, they cram these horses together and I'm worried it will turn into something like a puppy mile. And the horses that don't turn out white what do they do with those sell them to meat trucks?. It just didn't seem that they completely thought it through and thoroughbreds have an incredible amount of energy and putting these horses in movies doesn't seem like a place for them to enjoy themselves. Horses like that need to be calm. The again they might turn out perfect im just really concerned for the health risk because they are rare the education on them might not be very high but I could easily be wrong.

Sun burning plus bugs equals miserable horse. You not only have to keep them covered in blankets if you let them out in summer but also gobs of sunscreen.
