Thanks for taking the time to put this video together, and as always, you absolutely nailed understanding how this product was designed and excels. HCD, like ALL Meguiar's Hybrid Ceramic items, REALLY shines (pardon the pun) when it is put either on very well prepped paint, or on top of coatings (which act like well prepped paint). -Markus, Meguiar's Professional Product Manager

Markus you guys crushed it with this product! This is exactly what I was looking for to be able to recommend as a universal coating topper. Great value, locally available, easy on/off, smells fantastic, and a very visible performance enhancement. Thanks Brian! I'll be sure to stay posted on your channel, would love to hear your thoughts for how it's behaving on your coating! It's really a testament to the performance of these coatings, just when you think they're dead or well beyond their prime or repair, it doesn't take much to really bring them back to life to give us performance that we're not going to see out of a wax or sealant at anywhere near this durability lifespan. And I'm excited for this detailer, at 26oz for around $16-17 that you can buy over the counter that plays extremely well with the coatings, awesome stuff.

Looking forward to your upcoming test of Meguiars Hybrid Ceramic Detailer and Meg’s Hybrid Ceramic Wax. I have tried a lot of spray sealants and spray waxes and I love the appearance of Hybrid Ceramic Wax on my cars. It keeps my car cleaner for longer as dust just won’t accumulate on the surface like it does when using many other wax products. Really excited about Meguiars new professional products M27 and M799 and hope you test those when they are available for sale next month.

Very good video and great to see the synergy of the Megs product with the coatings. In the video you mentioned that after 6 months of not being washed, if the coating was not repelling water as strongly it may need a stronger decontamination, but this may cause an old or weak coating to fail. There is a product that I have used that helps with such situations to clean the coating gently, particularly water spotting and tree sap which is a very useful alternative - Koch Chemie FSe. It is a quick detailer that has a mild acid that is designed to remove water spotting.

Hi WaxMode, sorry for being late to the party. And thanks for your time as you are one of the better KZbinrs that cover these topics. From my understanding of this topic, Maguires has developed a topper that not only bonds, but works in conjunction with coatings? I’ve used other products as toppers to coatings and waxes (mainly chasing jetting and more gloss) ; Luster, Kamikaze overcoat, Angelwax 5th, Polish Angel High Gloss and Bead Maker off the top of my head. All of the ones I’ve mention acted as a sacrificial layer and set/bonded on top of the coating. I know it’s a lot to take on, but would love to see a full blow coated test panel/panels w/ different toppers. Though you did cover some in this video, most of the comparisons we see on toppers are on bare panels.and most of us use them as demonstrated here. Apologies if I open the can of worms , but would be great to see more demonstration like this.

I'm super excited right now, I know a lot of people are getting burnt out over all this "ceramic" marketing, but I'm not one of them. I've always enjoyed working with Gyeon and CarPro over the years that were sio2 "ceramic" based, now we've got some seriously good options in the consumer market that are competing not only much better on price, but also competing well on performance. Do you know if the Nova line is available in the U.S.? I've wanted to try them out based on Sandro's awesome reviews for the line, but I'm not sure if they have any distributors in the U.S.

@@WaxMode Sadly no US distribution yet. I payed for the 50$ shipping fee, I bought a pair of two in litre form of each one, and more of their products, such as their car soaps, and Wheel cleaner. I don't regret it because I don't run a business and it was for myself so yeah, a great expensive present I treated myself to. I don't think I'll be able to go back to car pro reload or elixir or any other products after the experience I've had with these unrivaled products in water behavior, slickness, and self cleaning. I also got something from BOWDENS OWN, their happy ending snow foam and fully slick, my God what stellar products that absolutely outperforms carpro hydrofoam 2 and the performance of bead maker, I that respective order. So in conclusion, these products I bought are my new go too's that will last a good while for my one car and person needs. These are something you'd by to treat yourself and not buy in the US for a business. I hope what I said makes sense.

Seeing what Meguiars Ceramic Detailer did after seeing what Reload and Beadmaker COULDN'T do....blows me away. I've been using Carpro Elixer and Ech20 (1:20) for drying aids and C2v3 as a proper topper to my Crystal Serum Light. But now I'm highly thinking about using Meguiars Ceramic detailer to help keep the coating in good shape.

If you end up picking up HCD, definitely keep me posted on how you like it! C2v3 is great on both CSL and EXO, I had my bottle out recently running some tests with it and it's held up well even after being opened up years ago. I did another application of HCD on top of the Gliss section, I'm going to check to see if it's able to improve it any better, if not then I might pull out Elixir to test on top.

Basically people just use this for good painted surfaces and even your plastic trim on the outside, once on it lasts about 2 to 3 months on a daily, i have used it and every month i use it to detail my car which is the Chevy Ss bassically and wow totaly better than the blue bottle or use both use the blue bottle as a first coat use a damp microfiber towel to apply it and then just use a soft medium pile microfiber towel to level and wipe off, never use the blue bottle as a spray and rinse total waste of $$, but as a spray on and wipe off perfect and then just use the green bottle every time you detail the car, so far the only product i have seen that will outlast and have better water hydro properties would be a dedicated ceramic coating or nova jet or luster or car pros hydro 2, thats it people, totaly amazing stuff well done to Meguiar's for coming up with a perfect detailer. :)

Interesting comparison. I've noticed a revival of hydro-resistance with TW seal and shine on top of CarPro CQuartz with great success. Will have to try Mequiar's now. I like topping with Bead Maker because of the slickness (like no other) but it doesn't seem to last long.
@WaxMode
@WaxMode 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! I tried topping my sections of CQUK 3.0 with Seal N Shine side by side with Bead Maker and I did see a bit of masking with the Seal N Shine, noticeably less hydrophobic whereas Bead Maker was maintaining great hydrophobic performance. I found that as I was maintaining the coatings with fairly regularly applications of Bead Maker, it was maintaining incredible hydrophobic performance. But you're right, if you let it go too long then it will degrade. Bead Maker feels slicker than Hybrid Ceramic Detailer, but HCD has much better repairing characteristics in the short term.

I just got cquartz tio2 2 layers coated last week. I don't have a topper at the moment, so just the 2 layers. So you recommend steering away from the stronger products, then out of carpro elixir, Meguiars hybrid ceramic detailer, bead maker, BSD, and TW ceramic wet wax which i have (or other ones if you think its better), what do you think is the best maintenance for the coating in terms of not masking the coating's properties (hydrophobicity is often talked about but is that an indication of protection?) but still providing a good sacrificial layer on top of the coating? I plan on using the topper as a drying aid each time I wash too (probably every 2 weeks) thanks!!

Hi, Just saw this video and thanks for sharing your experience on topper selection with coated vehicle. My question is that can I put Eagle one Wipe & Shine detailer as a topper in conjunction with the ceramic coated vehicle
@WaxMode
@WaxMode 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeffery, I would be careful with Eagle One Wipe & Shine Detailer as a coating topper. I haven't tried this yet on the coatings, but I do know from my other tests with it that it is a bit on the heavier side of the spectrum, and I would be worried about this covering up and masking a bit of the coating's performance. It doesn't have the best hydrophobics, and usually any time you have a heavier type of spray protectant or even detailer that isn't quite as hydrophobic as the coating you're applying it to, sometimes this can knock down the hydrophobic performance of the coating.

This is a very good video on a lot of levels. That said, why would I use HCD over HCW during regular washes? My truck doesn't really get washed too often anymore, and certainly not treated with detailer outside of bird droppings, so I'm not really thinking it would be useful to me.
@WaxMode
@WaxMode 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks a bunch! I've found that with HCW I always use it wet, but there are a lot of situations that I've washed the paint, dried it, and want to use a dry application maintenance product. Out of all of the detailers in Meguiar's lineup, HCD is the best one to maintain the great hydrophobics of HCW if you do need to perform spot cleaning. But if you're doing maintenance on a regular basis and constantly reapplying HCW, you may not have a need for it. HCW is heavy enough to use it as a standalone protectant, but still versatile enough to be able to use it for maintenance when used wet. The risk with heavier standalone spray products, is sometimes they can overpower the hydrophobic behavior of your paint coatings. That's not always the case, but I generally want a lighter spray topper in order to complement the coating, not necessarily overpower it and replace the coating's performance with its own behavior, because this can potentially reduce hydrophobics. HCD seems to be a very good blend of being a fairly lighter spray with some good lubrication, able to provide more cleaning and cut through contamination as a detailer compared to HCW in order to repair or maintain the coating more effectively. That's the main benefit of HCD for me based on first impressions.

Great and nice review. My car has csl with exo installed by a proffesional. And i was thinking of buying c2v3 as a topper. But after watching thiss video im having second thoughts on c2v3. I read some good and bad reviews on c2v3 as a topper. Now meguars hybrid ceramic detailiner is on my mind after watching this. Do you preffer i use c2v3 or meguars hybrid ceramic detailer as my topper on my csl exo combo?
@WaxMode
@WaxMode 3 жыл бұрын
Toppers can always be hit or miss with coatings, there’s just some paint where a topper will play really well and others the coatings can be more sensitive. C2v3 is what I would consider a more significant topper when you start to notice EXO dying off, it’s certainly on the heavy side of things and not something you want to use after every wash, but it would certainly be able to boost things back up. It’s heavier than HCD in my experience. With CSL and EXO, I don’t have a lot of experience with this combo so I usually default to Matt at Obsessed Garage’s insight who uses P&S Bead Maker after every single wash with his CSL and EXO topped vehicles. He’s been using this system for years and has absolutely loved it. I’ve also used Bead Maker on a ton of different coatings and it has worked great for me until the coating begins to show more significant wear like you see in this video here. HCD will be heavier than Bead Maker, more likely to streak on darker paint, but HCD has been a great option so far. I have not tested it yet on a CSL base coat test section so I can’t confirm 100%. Based on Matt’s experience I would seriously consider Bead Maker as a first choice option, good to use on a very regular basis. Check in with your installer too, if they offered a warranty on the work, then you might have to use what they recommend in order to keep the warranty in tact.

Hey Waxmode, great video!! Do you have a coating on the windows? Or is it just Meguiars HCD by itself? Because the hydrophobicity of the windows looked like they were coated. Thanks
@WaxMode
@WaxMode 4 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey Flayter - The windows I actually just prepped with the new Ultimate Quik Detailer, and then ran Hybrid Ceramic Detailer on top of that. No coatings or anything underneath, and in fact if you’re running any type of regular maintenance with a spray protectant on the glass, you’ll build up an awesome hydrophobic behavior over time with continued use. This glass responded very well with one application of HCD and it held up perfectly after 2 weeks. Same thing on the trim as well, any continued use of spray waxes/sealants will build up a very nice hydrophobic surface on it over time.

I would be happy to use it on top of ULW and UQW. The one thing you need to look out for on black is make sure you wipe HCD down well, some have noticed streaking on darker paints. I would consider HCD an evolution and a heavier protectant than UQW. Better beading, need to wipe it down a bit more.

@WaxMode
@WaxMode 3 жыл бұрын
As long as you’re noticing good results out of Reload, then I would stick with it. Reload can be notoriously difficult on some paint leading to a streaky mess, other guys have seen Reload clog the coating up over time with continued use, and others love the stuff to death. HCD should definitely streak less under the same circumstances while still maintaining the awesome beading of the base coating. But before you switch, always test a smaller section out first for a week with the new topper just to see how it reacts, that way if something does go wrong you’re not having to go into overdrive to try and fix the issue.

How do you know that the coating is what is causing the hydrophonic properties after using a topper and not just the topper itself providing hydrophobics?
@WaxMode
@WaxMode 4 жыл бұрын
In the video I applied the Meguiar's Hybrid Ceramic Detailer at the same time across all sections of the paint, however only on the strong coatings like Blackfire, CQUK 3.0, CQuartz TiO2, and EXO was the detailer able to revive them to a very strong level. The topper is providing a portion of the hydrophobics, but the strength and health of the base coating determines the peak performance, and this is why the Adam's, IGL Premier, Hybrid Ceramic Wax, CMX, and Gliss sections were no where near as hydrophobic compared to the stronger coatings, again even though Hybrid Ceramic Detailer was applied at the same exact time across all of them.

@WaxMode
@WaxMode 4 жыл бұрын
I haven't tested the Ceramic Wet Wax or Griot's 3-in-1 as a coating topper yet. When I tested the 2.0 version of Ceramic Boost on top of the weathered M37 Coating, it actually clogged up the coating more instead of acting as a repair, so I didn't want to risk that reaction in this test. Hybrid Ceramic Detailer is more hydrophobic in the short term than all of the above, and fairly light as well so I don't feel that it would cover up or mask a lot of the original protection of the coating. It was checking a lot of boxes in the short term for me which is why I decided to really focus on it during this test.

@@WaxMode glad to know that you like the combo too! I have the original formula that I bought less than 2 years ago. That can will possibly outlast my 2017 car considering the amount I need and how durable it is. 😊 It would be awesome to see how a sealant can be refreshed just as the coating has. Your video makes it clear that the paint preparation (substrate quality) is just as important as the quality of an LSP/coating. I had my doubts when people would suggest that a topper could refresh the base protection but the different combinations you show us in the video leave no room for doubts.

Works great on the glass, I did try it on the front windshield with good results as well. You always want to be careful putting protectants on the front, make sure you wipe thoroughly and double check before driving at night, sometimes products can lead to increased glare from headlights. Haven't noticed that on a clean application of HCD. Will check for wiper skipping once we get some rain in.

I haven't been able to watch any of your videos for a long time, but I usually think they are awesome! This one however makes me scratch my head. You didn't wash the car for 6 months and during that 6 months all you did was kept applying Bead Maker to a slightly dirty/dusty car? I would think that would just clog and mask the benefits of the coating especially if it was done to a dusty car. I could be wrong because there's so much information out there that can be confusing, but... my understanding is that CarPro wants you to use Reset every month and a chemical decon every 3-6 months (IronX or similar for example) to clean and revive the coating. I always thought that toppers are a "optional" temporary sacrificial layer to some people and for some they believe all they do over time is clog the coating up, masking the performance of the coating, making it seem like the coating itself has failed, making a chemical decon even more necessary... Possibly just like in this video? Putting the Bead Maker use aside... I would think that 6 months with no washes in itself would require a chemical decon to bring the coating back to life. You certainly have more experience than I do however... I don't think there's any "revival" of a coating by using a "topper" like in this case with Megs HCD. I mean all you are getting here is the Megs HCD effect on top of the contaminated or failed coating, not the coating below it. The same results could be done with Reload, Sonax BSD, etc. as was done here with Megs HCD, but there's no revival of the coating itself. Once the HCD is gone you are back to square one, back to the the jacked up coating below the HCD. The advice I got with my CarPro UK 3.0 coating was to wash with Reset and keep the coating virgin, no toppers (not even Reload) but if I couldn't resist, use some CarPro Elixir after a Reset wash. Then every 3-6 months decon with something like IronX. As much as I like Sonax BSD (mixed 50/50 with distilled water) I was told never to use it or products like it on a ceramic coating as it was not designed to be used with a coating despite many using it for that purpose. Head spinning! LOL!
@WaxMode
@WaxMode 3 жыл бұрын
I definitely had a lot of info that I was throwing out there in this video and the way I worded it was confusing. Not sure if the below will help or make things worse, likely both! The first wash and rinse at 1:00 was the first wash in 6 total months, the car wasn't touched with anything for that entire 6 month period. Now before that 6 month period, I had already switched over to maintaining both the CQUK 3.0 and CQuartz TiO2 sections with Bead Maker after my regular routine maintenance washes. So this wash at 1:00 is the aftermath of what happened when I took two healthy coatings at 13 months old that were being regularly maintained with Bead Maker, and abruptly stopped washing the car for 6 months. At 19 months old, we've got a massive reduction in hydrophobic performance that a Reset wash wasn't able to revive. The rest is definitely a rabbit hole of topping vs. not topping debate, and decontaminating vs. topping for maintenance. I can only speak for my observations that I draw from to form my arguments, but very likely that this is largely paint dependent, where two identical coatings on different paints using the same toppers or undergoing the same durability lengths can showcase drastically different results for the end user. During my earlier tests of different coatings on this car years before, I had negative results going straight into the decontamination step when the coatings started to slow down. In most cases, using Iron-X or Spotless, some APC's, even stronger soap washes reduced hydrophobic performance even further that I wasn't able to ever revive with toppers to a satisfactory and lasting level. This is why I would generally recommend to try going with a topper first, before using a method that could potentially and permanently reduce the performance of a coating that's in a fragile state or clogged.

Did you ever encounter any streaking? I was loving it until I saw streaks. It's really only visible on black paint, but it frequently leaves very very light residue. I spray into the applicator not directly on the panel and I'm indoors with shade. I can use a different detail spray or a damp towel to remove them, but it wastes time having to carefully examine every panel with a Scangrip to check. Defeats the entire purpose of detail spray, to be fast and easy to apply.. 😕
@WaxMode
@WaxMode 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Keith, I have seen some lighter film that didn't level out perfectly mostly on the darker windows with Hybrid Ceramic Detailer. On the paint I haven't noticed streaking on the lighter colors. This is definitely heavier than a standard detailer, so on those darker black paints I can certainly see how you can notice that film on the paint, it won't wipe off as super clean as something like their standard red detailer or the Final Inspection M34.

Hey WaxMode...can the Meguiar's Hybric Ceramic Detailer be used as a waterless wash in the same way that the Turtle Wax 3 in 1 Ceramic Detailer can? And if so, have you been able to test the two directly against each other to see how they compare?
@WaxMode

Meguiar's lists HCD for use with dust and light contaminants, while Turtle Wax lists full waterless cleaning for Ceramic 3-in-1 Detailer. I haven't tested any waterless wash capabilities yet, but the hydrophobic performance in the short term is much stronger with HCD compared to Ceramic 3-in-1, and that was the reason I decided to test HCD on the coatings. I wanted that strong hydrophobic element to really try and jump-start the behavior of the coatings. Definitely expect a lot more testing coming up!

How’s the longevity of this so far? I am looking to revive my significant other’s daily driver that has 1.5yr old cquartz 3.0. Still has protection but nowhere near the performance of my car that is maintained consistently with beadmaker on top of the same coating (even older). I contemplated turtle wax seal and shine for its durability/longevity because the car gets inconsistent maintenance. Thoughts/Suggestions?
@WaxMode
@WaxMode 4 жыл бұрын
Could have swore I responded to this, sorry Mickey! I've been maintaining on a regular basis within a 1-4 week period since pulling HCD out. The revival is holding up well, so waiting a few weeks I'm not seeing the coatings going back to the performance before putting HCD on top. But once I've made the decision to begin topping the coatings, I would likely stay on that path of routine maintenance after washing, which is good for me because with so many products, it's hard not to want to use something after the washes if I wasn't specifically testing that paint. I did not prefer Seal N Shine as a topper for the coatings, it reduced CQUK 3.0 compared to Bead Maker and this makes sense because Seal N Shine is way heavier and less hydrophobic, it will want to mask the properties of the coating. HCD is definitely my preferred topper at the moment.
@muckeyn
@muckeyn 4 жыл бұрын
WaxMode what are your thoughts on HCD vs Beadmaker outside of the revival properties (gloss, hydrophobicity, slickness, etc...)? I may test HCD with her car as it could use some revival like you experienced. I would strip the coating, correct and recoat however she doesn’t care enough for me to put in that much work at this point. A decon and light autoscrub is probably as much work I’d put into it.

It's been a while since I pulled BSD out on some of the coatings. I had it going with the Sonax CC36 when I was testing it years ago with good results, as well as with McKee's 37 Sio2 Enhanced Coating on the front bumper which worked well. HCD is definitely a bit slicker than BSD, so if we can get a boost in the beading while improving the slickness of the paint, this is what would drive my choice to other toppers like HCD instead of BSD.

Why not use the coating's accompanying topper spray?
@WaxMode
@WaxMode 4 жыл бұрын
Certainly a viable option especially if the coatings are in good shape. But the test with Reload was selected to see how the accompanying topper plays on top of the weathered CQUK, which wasn't giving me the results I was wanting, and is where HCD stood out. Also pricing on many of the accompanying toppers is getting up there, $35 now for Cure and Reload at 400-500ml, $30 for C2V3, Ceramic Boost 2.0 was around $25 for 16oz when I picked it up. The goal is to see if the new consumer products can compete against the professional or enthusiast products, checking for any possible advantages not just on value and price, but on performance as well.

Is it right to claim that a product has revived a coating when all it has done is make a surface hydrophobic again? Should we just go with MHCD rather than the hassle of a real ceramic coating if hydrophobics are all that matters?
@WaxMode
@WaxMode 4 жыл бұрын
LSD - At 8:39 this is what HCD would do for you on top of unprepped paint after two weeks of durability. Notice the difference in hydrophobic performance compared to what HCD looks like on top of the Blackfire, CQuartz, and Adam’s sections. This video should be evidence to explain to the viewer why you *would* go with a real ceramic coating as your base, rather than just using HCD. It also shows why you would go with HCD instead of Reload and Beadmaker to better revive the hydrophobic properties of your base coating to a higher level if they’ve been diminished. Hydrophobics aren’t all that matter. Adam’s lost all of its hydrophobicity after 11 months of no topping maintenance, and had I assumed that it was completely dead or eroded before trying to revive its hydrophobic performance with HCD, then I would have been mistaken, which is why that section is showing stronger hydrophobic performance compared to the section that had IGL Premier applied at the same time as it.

WaxMode thanks for the reply, so would you go with HCD over Reload and Elixir to maintain CarPro Lite?

@@LSD04 I would be very tempted to stick with HCD on Lite, I haven't tested this out yet though, the first car that I used Lite on was back in Chicago months and I might have the owner grab HCD to see how it plays on top. HCD has a great hydrophobic limit by itself, I'd say on par with Reload but the way that it was able to revive the coatings better than what Reload was capable of makes it the stronger choice in my opinion. Elixir is not quite as hydrophobic, and it's also a heavy topper, HCD feels like it wipes in and off a bit better which is what I like on the coatings. Elixir does have stronger chemical resistance though, similar to what you would see out of Turtle Wax Seal N Shine.

Griot's Ceramic 3-in-1 Wax is a much more significant protectant, and sometimes it doesn't want to play as well when the paint already has a strong coating on it, I've run in to some streaking trying to use it like that. Whereas the Hybrid Ceramic Detailer really works perfectly on the coatings, it doesn't bond to the strength that the Griot's does but you also don't need it to, allow the base layer coating to provide the strong protection and maintain them with lighter forms of maintenance sprays. The Hybrid Ceramic Detailer is also more hydrophobic compared to the Griot's, so it plays better on top of more hydrophobic coatings for me.

Check the last video that I put up on my channel for how both of these coatings are holding up at 2 years and 4 months of durability after switching back to regular spray topping maintenance. The reason the coatings in this video were diminished, is because I went 6 months without washing the paint at all, and this clogged the coatings up a bit.
