My last colonoscopy was in 2009, when I was 49. The gastroenterologist asked what medications I was taking and I replied, "none." Her head shot up in surprise, as if I'd uttered an obscenity. "Not even a statin?" She then asked in an accusatory tone, "You'd take medications if they were prescribed for you, wouldn't you?" I replied, "Of course, if I needed them." She clearly didn't like me making decisions about my health. 15 years later, I'm having my second colonoscopy in two days at age 64. When taking my medical history they asked what drugs I'm taking. "Vitamin B12, vitamin D3, vitamin K2." Still no statins. I do need to lose some weight and eat less carbohydrate. I'm working on it.

I had a heart episode at 42 in the middle of the night. It woke me from a deep sleep with pain around my heart. This was about 5 months from my second mandated shot of you know what. I went to the cardiologist referral from my GP. With only my cholesterol of LDL of 107 and an ekg that showed no issues he prescribed a statin. He attempted to instill fear in to me of another eminent heart episode and needed a heart study. I am a healthy weight and I weight train 4 days a week and eat healthy and I am not a smoker. I thought this extreme when he didn’t even start with a lifestyle change. I went to another cardiologist and after looking at my bloodwork ekg he did not see a pattern and only recommended a sonogram of my heart which was normal. It was apparent that the 1st cardiologist was bought off by big pharma. The 2nd actually wanted what was best for me considering my lifestyle , eating habits and age.

There’s actually lots of good data showing statins significantly reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s. @patriciaseyfferle1427Ай бұрын
I dunno...I want more info on that. My mother had high cholesterol all her life. She had 2 mild heart attacks, and was on a statin after the 2nd one, which was when the Dr said she had had one previously. We figured it must have been the time her shoulders hurt for a few days when she was 58 or 59. When she died at 98, she was "deaf as a post" and had almost no memory due to brain shrinkage. My dad's sister and mother both had Alzheimer's; they said my grandmother's was due to "hardening of the arteries," and she had to watch her sodium intake. Her daughter developed Type 2 diabetes and then the dementia. I suspect Grandma had Type 2 diabetes too, but it was undiagnosed. She loved her Edy's candy. She passed in 1977, and alot less was known about all of it then. I am (understandably, I hope) concerned about developing Alzheimer's, as I have Metabolic Syndrome. My doc wanted to put me on Statins, but I asked to try another way first. I lost 40 lbs on a paleo diet and my blood pressure, triglycerides and total cholesterol are down, but I still have a ways to go. I am almost totally sugar and starch-free. I am more concerned about the insulin-resistance because of the inflammatory problems it causes, which leads to all the other risks. I've read that some people just have higher cholesterol than average, and I want to look into whether it helps to protect the brain. We tell pregnant women to eat plenty of protein and good fats in the last trimester because the baby's brain needs them to develop. Why wouldn't we need them in later life, too, to preserve brain function? I was told that brain shrinkage is common in older adults--why is that? Mightn't we need the fat and cholesterol to preserve brain function?

I've had super high cholesterol all my life (I'm 73) and my doctor put me on Crestor when I was 50. I decided that for 9 points, it wasn't worth affecting my liver, so I stopped taking it.
@robertpescheАй бұрын
I think you must have misunderstood your test results. The LOWEST dose of Crestor typically lowers LDL cholesterol by 40 to 45%. If you were taking it properly and don’t have some physiological deviation worthy of study, there’s no way it only lowered your total cholesterol 9 points.

I feel much healthier in my 50s than I ever felt in my life. I never told my doctor anything. Please do your own research. Again, my diet is beef, some cheese and water. That is all.

Jordan Peterson and his wife have done the same and they also say they are healthier than ever and have zero problems from eating total carnivore . I am going to do the same, I will buy grass fed beef, wild salmon, and chicken raised properly. I drink nothing but purified water from my own well which I have tested and then use filtering for all my drinking water, I have about 64 oz of water just about everyday. I KNOW I am going to feel better going carnivore and lose weight to boot. Years ago I did the Atkins, lost 90 lbs effortlessly and felt 20 yrs younger. I am so ticked off at myself that I did not stick to it and gained the weight back. Not this time, I have had it with the junk and the dangerous stuff in every supermarket.

I’m so glad I finally have a doctor who looks at the whole picture! He is saying a lot of the same things this cardiologist is saying. I worked in cardiology 38 years and know they usually “follow the data” that statins will save your life. My doctor focuses more on staying out of insulin resistance and A1C levels. When my cholesterol levels came back high with a low A1C he had me get a cardiac MRI that looks tells us how much calcium is built up all the lining of the coronary arteries. He said if that came back high than we should consider a statin for me. Mine came back low. So, no statin. Like the cardiologist here, he said statins do not prevent heart attacks and death. He said it’s insulin resistance and encourages low carbs and the Mediterranean diet.

Supposedly I’ve had high cholesterol for years. My doctor said initially, well according to the old parameters you’re still fine. But after awhile she kept pushing for me to take a drug. Meanwhile my naturopath was not worried. Your good cholesterol is great, so it never even came up again. I would say to the doctor, I don’t even know how I can have high cholesterol because I didn’t eat meat for about 8 years, and minimum dairy products. So she kept pushing and I kept ignoring. I eat healthily about 90% of the time, very little sugar and processed foods, and never any fast food(mainly because I’m a celiac and can’t eat fast food bc of all the wheat). Last year my naturopath wanted my cortisol checked so I asked the doctor to include a fasting cortisol test. The doctor’s nurse called me with my results and said, “wow what are you doing??? Your cholesterol levels are perfect! My reply was I haven’t changed anything, I’m eating the same as I have for years”. When I told my naturopath what happened his hypothesis was that I took the cholesterol test on a fasting stomach, and that affected the reading. Long story short, my naturopath has kept me far healthier than my “doctor” ever has.

I'm a bit confused. What's the relationship of a fasting cortisol test to fasting cholesterol? Are they the same?
@AnikanotevenАй бұрын
@@margaretwhitt3851 oh sorry, that does sound confusing. My doctor has never required me to do a fasting cholesterol, although I know some are done like that. Now that was my naturopath speculating. He doesn't know. I guess what I'm trying to convey is that caution in all prescription drugs is necessary. If you need it you need it. But so many times you can fix the problem yourself. And this was especially weird because I had not changed one thing over the years with regard to diet and exercise because I've been focussed on my health since my 30's.

After discharge I was prescribed Lipitor so I took it severe headaches came back. I read my chart when I got home and saw they were giving me Lipitor while in my hospital bed. I did a follow up with my doctor, he said everything looked good stop the statins enjoy your life. My severe headaches ended and so did my Tylenol use. THEN, I had a CAC score test 6 weeks later since my PCP scheduled it months prior. Score score came back at 360 which is considered moderate calcification, right away my doctor prescribed Lipitor again. I said I don’t want to take it because of the headaches. He prescribes me Crestor, after a week of that and again severe headaches I emailed my doctor the side effects again. So what did my PCP do? He said let’s try you on something else, and prescribed Lipitor at a higher dose. I didn’t take them. I did a follow up last week he had me to blood work and was angry my LDL went up to 133 and total Cholesterol went to 220. He said you’re refusing Statins? I said yes, he was angry with me and got insulted when I told him these Statins are a money maker. He wrote in my record I refused Statins, and suggested I see a cardiologist. I made an appointment and I’m curious as to what he will say.

Conventional wisdom.… So my cardiologist put me on a statin. But he was a really good cardiologist and did a test of my liver, kidney, and muscle health. Evidence of muscle damage was found, and he discontinued the statin after three weeks. Guess what? That cardiologist works in an HMO and therefore makes no extra money by having more patients. But question: why did he test my blood for possible organ damage (which we did find)? Because even then it was known that high percentage of statin user will get cardiac and skeletal muscle dissolution, and must stop statins. Even then the dangers of statins were well known to properly informed HONEST cardiologists.

If cholesterol was responsible for heart attacks and strokes other cholesterol lowering meds would be preventative, but they aren't. The statins are cardioprotective secondary to cholesterol lowering and that is why they reduce heart attacks and strokes. Almost nobody is taking gemfibrozil or fenofibrate or ezetimibe, because while they all lower cholesterol they do not improve morbidity and mortality over placebo.

Yes, I had this too. It was a side effect reaction to pravastatin and hydrochlorothiazide. i thought I had a kidney stone, terrible pain in my lower back. I came in and the EAR doctor literally said if you would have waited another day you might have come in within a body bag, like ugh was horrible but reassuring to hear that from the doctor. The hospital cleared it up in like a day.

My cholesterol was high and doctor gave me statins for 3 months but my doctor told me statins could cause muscle pain and diabetes so I switch to red yeast made in Japan. After I took a month later I noticed that my muscle got weaker, because red yeast works same as statins. So I completely quit everything and just exercise daily and eating healthy, i am feeling better and crossing my fingers hope for the best

Here we are in 2024 and the expert medical industry can't get their act together on a consensus about cholesterol and statons.
@jonesrick1Ай бұрын
I've been taking statins for over a year now, maybe two; I don't recall when my doc prescribed them. My cholesterol was a little high; my heart is not a problem. I think my bad cholesterol is down around seven. I'm 80 1/2. I feel fine. My exercise consists of maintaining my wife's and my 20-acres spread in the N.C. foothills. I cut about five acres of field and grass when it's warm, I run wood through a chipper to make mulch for our gardens; I have a small quarter-acre garden for which I'm presently clearing land in order to expand. Our property is heavily wooded, and I'm frequently cutting trees down and recently bought a stump grinder for my 24-hp sub compact tractor. I've built and laid out three 8x16 ft bridges across the several creeks we have. There's other stuff to keep me busy, but I don't want to bore anyone who's read this far. We retired here in 2009. Soooo, my latest daily intake of medical stuff, which varies from order to order consists of: statins, copper, B12, D3, fish oil, folic acid, potassium citrate choline, and elderberry complex. I have no idea whether their effect on me is real or imagined. All I know is I feel my best when I'm outside working and I feel my worst when I start to wake up at daybreak. I eat cakes and cookies and cheez-its like there is no tomorrow. Lunch is usually ham, salami and cheese on a hard roll. I drink tea with a little orange juice mixed in for flavor. I also drink milk and coffee. Don't drink alcohol and I never smoked much before I quit altogether six years ago. In my youth I smoked pot every day from sun up to bedtime and did whatever drug was currently available. My little secret of surviving all this was to know when to stop before starting again, except for the pot which never addicted me or anyone I knew, and I knew a lot of boys and girls back then. I'm constantly snacking. Can't help it. I'm six-foot on-half inch and about 210 or 215, depending on the season. This is my story. What it proves I haven't the faintest idea. But if you look at me and Trump and what we eat, I'd say maybe it doesn't make any difference what you eat and drink or don't eat and drink, because me and Donald don't do anything special and we're still here, while other people fret over their health and they died years ago. The one thing I will say that bothers me, though, and I think everyone including RFK,Jr., and the Trumps would agree, is that we as a nation are way too fat and lazy, and it affects the way we think and act, not to mention how long we live--and not in a good way.

Years ago, I was prescribed statins and within a couple of weeks I was in so much pain I could hardly walk or move at all. I felt like I was in my 90’s and I was only in my 30’s. I stopped statins immediately but it took over a year for my pain to subside. At the time there was not much being reported about the dangers of taking statins. I knew they were bad then. I’m surprised and happy this is all finally coming out.

Speaking from England at the beginning of the year on the advice of our King due to his prostate diagnosis he said if concerned your doctor wants to see you so l did eventually saw a locum at a satellite clinic who did a blood test and sent me for a scan sometime later l was informed by text to go to their pharmacy to arrange prescription for statins as l had raised cholesterol l am male aged 73 and am 9 and half stone “133 pounds “ when l challenged at reception about this and said I was more concerned about prostate results she looked at screen and everything was fine would have been nice to have heard from a doctor so l decided to adjust my diet and sod the statins. Because of being on medication that l should never have been given for 15 years and nearly ended my life prematurely since 2008 l have been very sceptical about what they push sorry to be long winded about this but very hard to do without telling it like it is.

Statins also destroys muscle mass, especially in the dosages they’re giving people. The heart just happens to be a muscle.

In very very few cases, statins cause muscle issues, which is exactly why those on statins get a test every 4-6 months.

@ I did point out that the dosages, Most of them are too high. President Chomo administration raised them. As for Dr.s checking patients medication, that’s a laughable comment. All they do is run tests and prescribe more. Most people see multiple “specialists “ that never seem to read a effing chart from others, and nor do they care. As long as they’re getting their cut from the insurance and big pharma. I know too many people who are suffering under the so called healthcare system.

@@DawnYockey Sorry about your gender or whatever you are, but ...ah ... person, no doc is handing out statins without checking liver enzymes first, and they are not giving out prescriptions more than 6 mos, and you can't renew without another test. Nor will any insurance company allow it. If your doc is so shady that they aren't looking, well you should look at the numbers yourself and find a new doc. After my blood test, my doctor called and said my ldl was high and instantly said he was prescribing me statins. I told him no and he freaked. You NEED to take statins and change your diet. I said no I don't. I've already lost 45 pounds, doing Keto and intermittent fasting, I'm not changing a thing. I feel great. He was flabbergasted. These doctors read nothing of consequence from a diet perspective. We're better off treating ourselves. I'm up to 70 pounds lost and counting.

I had to hear about how my heart arteries were going to get clogged and y’all know the treat. I was having some issues heart palpitations and so on . I went to a heart dr and had all the tests you need to have multiple EKG’s echos 2 stress tests. I was 68 at the time . When the tests came back I had no clogged arteries. He said what I have I could go outside and point to someone and they would have it to . Didn’t matter to my drs still wanted me on those statins . I refused. If I don’t have bad arteries why would I ? I’m old already haha
