Not only did he introduce this beautifully written song to a whole new generation but, he also introduced the song to a different region of the country. The reason that song became #1 on the Country Charts is the themes in that song are universal ; economic struggles, Abandonment, Alcoholism,& longing to escape to a better life. Since Tracy Chapman is not only the songwriter she also owns the publishing rights. I read somewhere that she shocked the Grammy’s producers when she wanted to sing her song live and not use a track. Yes, this is what diversity and respect looks like. Both equally respected each other. The song was easy to learn the words. You didn’t have to stop the cassette after each verse to write the words down. People born in the 70s will know what I mean.
