Basically, yes, that's what is happening in real time. But the question is: Are the people going to learn from history and not let this current mass war crime in Gaza happen again by creating a mass movement to change the social structure away from top-down bloody capitalism to a bottom-up, direct democracy of pro-social cooperation, co-ownership and mutual aid to meet people's needs, and share that system outward to the world? One Small Town initiative is presenting a pathway forward. You can turn a blind eye to it or you can learn about it more.

Actually that is not entirely true. There is a recently Israeli documentary named Tantura, about a village that was razed in 1948. They interview some of the Israeli soldiers involved, who are now maybe in their 80s. They are all smiling as they talk about what they did to those people, and one of them even says that some soldiers had just arrived from C Camps in Germany, and were full of rage that they took out on the Palestinians. There is not a shred of remorse in these old men who they interviewed, and they are all smiling as though recalling fond memories as they describe what they did. They must have thought this film was for a domestic audience. I didn’t see the whole film, but saw clips on YT.

Morris had this same talking point in his 4 way debate with Norm Finkelstein, Mouin Rabbani and Mr. BornAgainChristian, that is, that he hasn't seen or heard or read anything about people dying in Gaza of starvation. Norm and Mouin called him out on it at the time and that debate was 4 months ago and he couldn't be bothered to look it up. I was hoping Sam et al would have finished playing the clip of Benny Morris denying the facts about deaths by starvation/famine in Gaza, because Medhi goes on to literally cite Cindy McCain, director of the World Food Programme, who has said that the conditions in Gaza have left children in a skeletal state and Morris nitpicks by saying that the statement by her didn't reference anyone dying so.... therefore it's an exaggeration. It was arguably the worst part of the discussion because when presented with actual evidence he outright stuck to his guns and dismissed it without ANY sound arguments. It's clear he doesn't care at all about the people in Gaza.

They always talk about how Palestinians in Israel can vote, be the president of this, the head of that, but what about all the Palestinians who are living under Israeli martial law outside of Israel’s official borders? The ones whose lives are dominated by the Israeli government or Israeli settlers? I knew one guys from the West Bank in 1991 and his older brother was imprisoned for not paying taxes. So Israel was subjecting them to a military occupation and rule, and also collecting taxes from them to pay for it. Now in the PA ruled sectors on the West Bank l, the PA gets the tax revenue, but only after Israel, which is the only one who can collect and release it, takes its cut. And my guess is they still get everything from the non PA governed sectors.

That’s a simplification and a reductionist point of view. Israel’s actions today are a genocide, but just for starters let’s not pretend that Israel’s political, demographic and economic situation hasn’t change in the last 30 years, or underestimate the role that people like Netanyahu for so long have played in getting to this point or the role that the US has in supporting Israel by just peddling right wing /Zionist propaganda to put populace. We should see deeper into Israel’s history and creation as a state for the Jews.

My one criticism of Mehdi is that sometimes he needs to let the interviewee talk a little more. But compared to every other television reporter, he's 1,000,000 times better. There isn't a single reporter in major US TV media that is capable of asking a tough question. Mehdi at least poses tough questions and has some concept of how to ask follow-up questions. I do, however, think that sometimes he needs to let the interviewee answer in their own terms and accept that he won't get the answer he was looking for. Because he straddles the line between pundit and journalist, sometimes the pundit comes out a little too much. That said, I'll still take him over our completely incompetent and pundit laden journalists any day of the week.

You do hear that causal attributional fallacy repeated a lot by people in the west who selectively empathise, seeing Hamas's attacks as an outrage but Israel's crimes as justified. It's nothing more nor less than a complete abrogation of Israel's moral agency or autonomy. Essentially saying that Israel's crimes are Hamas's fault because they knew Israel would commit crimes in retaliation. By that logic of course, noone is to blame for anything because everything is in response to something that came before. It starts you on the search for the original sin, and then debating who threw the first stone according to what you believe constitutes a stone. But the point of the chicken and the egg is that it's a nonsense, rather like a linguistic fallacy. Neither comes first, rather evolution from prior states occurred whereby that particular form of procreation developed, and at some point we designated the adult form a chicken, but, species are not discrete entities in nature, it's just a name attached to a concept of a type of animal. There's no beginning or end, just a process. And in law, there are no justifications in that sense for crimes (and no defence for crimes against humanity). A killing may not be murder, but, and particularly as the defence of provocation has largely disappeared, the fact that someone sinned against you is not considered a defence in the event you sin against them. If someone kills your brother and you kill their family, you don't get to argue that they murdered first, and you murdered only consequently. Both you and they are held responsible for your crimes. Israel's propaganda has long hinged on dehumanisation, on the idea that the Palestinians are barbarians at the gates, and Israel is just doing what it has to do to preserve its noble civilisation with its human rights and rule of law. And that killing them is a necessary but unfortunate consequence of its efforts to preserve that better society. The problem is it literally only works if you engage in the dehumanisation. The moment you view Palestinians as coequal in their humanity, Israel looks very different. What you begin to see is a country that has all the power, and yet makes no concessions for peace, and which has regularly brutalised the civilian population. You don't need to know the detail, all you need is to have lived through a few outbreaks of violence for the pattern to become clear. Most British people I know when the Hamas attack happened all agreed it wouldn't be long before Israel had killed ten times as many civilians as they had lost. Because that's always what happens. In our lifetimes, that was always what happened. And if that's what you expect, if that's what you believe, you don't see Israel as a moral country, because most of us tend to think a moral country is one that behaves better than those who sin against it.

Tradition holds that when Hillel the Elder (died ca. 10 CE) was asked by a pagan to give a lecture on Torah no longer than he could stand on one foot, he said, "That which is hateful to you, do not do unto your fellow. That is the whole Torah; the rest is commentary; go and learn." When a larger colloquium of Talmudic sages considered the question of which is the greatest commandment, the consensus was not “Love God”; it was “Love your neighbor as yourself,” for only through that practice do we begin to know whereof we speak when we invoke the Name. (A dissenting opinion was a passage that’s not literally a commandment: “This is the book of the generations of Adam.” The premise was that one could infer the commandment to love from knowing that we are all brothers and sisters. Most folks, though, are doubtfully so erudite.) There’s considerable trouble with ascribing to the secular state of Israel special legitimacy when it flouts the ethical heritage that so many Israelites consider key to the definition of their people, anciently bound together by that of a diversity of tribes come as refugees from dispossessing oppression in every direction to the rough hill country of Palestine. For a couple thousand years, Israelites with no state in which they held political sway were fairly reckoned a people on average admirable in standing for justice for all. Yet, as with the creation of so many other ethno-states, the modern state of Israel became a driver for injustice. I agree with the anarchist analysis that the function of any state is to enforce a class hierarchy. When a fundamental part of its definition is an ethnic category or ‘race’, it should be no surprise that this adds further oppression, more extreme disregard by the ruling class for the population made the lowest underclass. We had seen that many times over before 1948, not least in the CSA, the Western expansion of the USA, and the Third Reich. It was as if the 20th century were proceeding in ignorance of what had been wreaked in its first half and before that the 19th. As to what Hamas knew of Likud, expecting a depraved institution to be horrifically evil doesn’t get the depraved individuals off the hook for in the event indeed choosing to do horrific evil. They had opportunity to belie that expectation. Given what happened in Yemen, it would be astonishing if famine were not also happening in Gaza. If Likud’s apologists really believed and wanted support for that claim, then they would allow reporters and aid workers access to Gaza.

Where is the evidence for this? The nearly year long genocide(which is still continuing) and which has killed a minimum of 40,000 civilians Palestinians, and will reach 186,000 murders of Palestinians according to the lancet. The majority of the populations around the world have come to Lowe's and despise Israel, and that's not going away. it is the action of Israel's genocide of Palestinians and the hatred around the world for those actions that is definitely making it more dangerous for Jews around the world. unfortunately that is despite the fact that so many of the Jewish people have stood up and marched and spoken out against Zionist genocide in Gazza.
